Vice: how an online forum for moms became a toxic hotbed of transphobia

broadly.vice.com/amp/en_us/article/a3mn9k/mumsnet-uk-mom-forum-terf-transphobia-feminism

Thought people might be interested in this article. One thing that strikes me is the 'reducing women to their biology' argument. Don't transwomen 'know' they're not male because their body feels wrong? Then it is about biology isn't it? Otherwise why do they think they're female?

I'm not menopausal yet so quite fancy a hotbed.

NotTerfNorCis · 06/12/2018 20:58

piss all over other people‘s office doors and shower them with rape threats.

According to Joss these things are mindblowingly trivial unless they happen to transwomen, which they do every 5 seconds.

R0wan lol! Mumsnet recipes: officially mind-blowing! I might have to try one one of these days...(And the emojis. Very different from all other emojis on the vast internet. Much more mind-blowing. So mind-blowing they can transport users through the portal. To the hotbed. I'm in!)

I can't be angry with Eve. I just feel quite sad for women who can't hold opinions unless they've first been vetted and approved by a male. Male approval isn't the be all and end all. You won't collapse and die if you say things that men don't like. Try it, it's really liberating.

LurkingWaspi · 06/12/2018 21:04

Eve, Tomorrow I will be sober
but you will still be a witless handmaiden.

I personally find many aspects of TRA ideology to be philosophically nonsensical. Monitor that.

SanFranBear · 06/12/2018 21:08

Only halfway through but Bowlofbabelfish - I LOVE your post! Best thing I've read in ages, thank you!

Squall · 06/12/2018 21:09

We’re all white middle class women because the racist b*stards think they can sneak into the title of ‘women’ by including themselves with black women. Completely forgetting of course that black women are, actually, women.

ILikeyourHairyHands · 06/12/2018 21:10

Also, wot Macareaux sed.

I too have been around MN for 13 years. I found it through the broadsheets and got really into it when I had my children. It was a slightly different place then, but it was always subversive and the name was half the joke. The thing that drew me in was the fact it was a place for intelligent women to come together and chew the fat, admittedly in those days it was a bit more cliquey, but, bloody hell, I had some laughs with the women around then. Real visceral laughs, with intelligent, connected women.

And it's got bigger and people have come and left. It's changed, as has the world, and the influence of the online-sphere.

But it was always an important space, and it's become even more important as it's one of the few spaces that now allows unfettered discussion of what it actually means to be a woman, how being a woman disadvantages us, and how womanhood is being colonised.

The fact that even talking about this is considered in some way subversive is so utterly inimical it's just farcical. That a male-centred group has emerged that can dismiss women's struggles so easily, and is given such gentle credence is beyond parody.

No anger but I do feel frustrated by the lack of critical thinking and investigation done by someone who apparently works as a journalist for a number of what should be reputable news sources.

My anger is reserved for the editors, the mentors and those who should be teaching people why decent journalism is so important and worth developing the neccessary skills for.

That's all... ps stop trying to use skin colour as a Gotcha! I am a black woman any oppression I may experience is not yours to appropriate as a stick to beat other adult human females with. I see you.

VickyEadie · 06/12/2018 21:27

The assumption that we're all middle class and white, though...

2rebecca · 06/12/2018 21:29

So Joss sticking with a bloke's name is a positive move. Better than becoming one of the Lilys of the fields.
Sad that Eve is unwilling to contemplate why women suddenly started coming to this board when GRA change discussions started. The reason most discussions on here are about the GRA and the definition of woman and the various ways it is under attack's because it is the biggest issue facing women as a sex at the moment.
It's a bit like asking why politicians are obsessed with Brexit at the moment.
TRAs monitoring us is creepy. Coercive control anyone? Not sure why they think discussing men monitoring women's activities on here will bring them sympathy.

2rebecca · 06/12/2018 21:32

Most of the UK is white. I don't think assuming any chat forum in the UK is mainly white is a great revelation.

R0wantrees · 06/12/2018 21:34

Latest Video from Mumsnet:

'Coercive Control is Abuse: Walking on Eggshells'

"Contains subject matter some viewers may find upsetting.

Coercive control is domestic abuse. Controlling or coercive behaviour was criminalised in 2015 - but it still affects hundreds of thousands of women in the UK.

Mumsnet, Women's Aid and Surrey Police have joined together to help raise awareness of the dangers of coercive control.

A new survey found 38% of Mumsnet users have suffered some form domestic abuse."

hipsterfun · 06/12/2018 21:36

The majority of TRAs are white middle-class boys, their mothers will by and large be politically-aware, second-wave feminists, who were very much the product of first and second-wave feminism.

IMO they’re the sons of petit bourgeoisconservative, conventional, not-terribly-political or intellectually oriented parents, who had their young adulthood and formed their values (such as they are) in the Thatcher years (neither Boomer nor X’er or the worst of both).

I don't know if I feel anger with women who propagate this bollox. I feel intensely irritated with them as I do with anyone who struggles with a mathematical or computational process (which is why I'd be an utterly shit teacher).

I don't feel anger because I can't expect everyone to view the world as I do, I can't suppose understanding and intelligence as a prerequisite to any question I posit. It would be arrogant of me to do so.

I do however reserve the right to be intensely fucking irritated by anyone who's been asked a question and then fails to do their due-diligence before lecturing me with an utterly fuckwitted answer.

Ignorant and thoughtless people don't always make me angry. Often ignorance and thoughtlessness are just environmental products. I can understand that people are very much the product of their environment.

What makes me angry, is intransigence, wilful ignorance, spiteful insistence and the gleeful fucking joy I suspect so many TRAs are currently wallowing. Like pigs in fucking shit.

They're the angry ones and they're spurting their shite at the perceived easiest victims, it's the old bollox of taking down the next weakest in order to bolster yourself.

Unfortunately, they seem to have structurally misunderstood the next weakest.

Waterparc · 06/12/2018 21:41

I have been recipe-d on here and it is fucking annoying.

As you were.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 06/12/2018 21:42

Who needs a spa day when you can snuggle up in the Mumsnet hotbed? Anyone for a pillow fight?

wrongsideofhistorymyarse · 06/12/2018 21:42

I feel a bit sorry for Joss. Imagine being called a witless handmaiden. And deserving the epithet.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 06/12/2018 21:44

No, it's Eve who's the witless handmaiden. Joss is trans & apparently mates with Dr Haddock.

HestiaParthenos · 06/12/2018 21:45

Most of the UK is white. I don't think assuming any chat forum in the UK is mainly white is a great revelation.

I don't live in the UK, but I am frequently told that people of colour are underrepresented in literature.

Considering that children's literature from the UK frequently contains at least one character whose parents are from India, I am inclined to think that yes, assuming everyone on mumsnet is white is quite unreasonable.

Waterparc · 06/12/2018 21:45

“Hot bed” sounds like a lyric from that song
Hot bed
Jumping jacks
Al-be-Querque.
