Vice: how an online forum for moms became a toxic hotbed of transphobia

Thought people might be interested in this article. One thing that strikes me is the 'reducing women to their biology' argument. Don't transwomen 'know' they're not male because their body feels wrong? Then it is about biology isn't it? Otherwise why do they think they're female?

Fantastic Empress

So you've got the dress but have you got the cunt?
Now don't get me wrong, wear whatever you like
But you'll never have red sheets in the middle of the night

Her I know NoWayCis had lots of reports and MN felt it fell into the mocking camp. I have it on good authority the author didn't consider the repurposing of the song in the light of the Manchester arena bombing and they really didn't want to cause offence with this aspect.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 09/12/2018 13:58

Mine's gone already. I don't have yours, HerFemaleness, I'm sorry.

Well, they can't link my Shania Twain knock-off to the Manchester bombing.

HerFemaleness · 09/12/2018 14:00

It was reported as inflammatory and the mods decided it wasn't in the spirit of civil debate.

Come on mods, surely we're allowed to have a bit of Saturday night kick back and relax?

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 09/12/2018 14:00

Cheers LikeDust!

Looks like Eve & the Mumsnet monitors are a busy little bunch right now, doesn't it?

SophieLMumsnet · 09/12/2018 14:04

Hi all,

We've deleted some posts that we did feel weren't really in the spirit - please do keep TGs in mind, we're doing our best to keep these threads going.

iguanadonna · 09/12/2018 14:14

‘We did feel’? Not ‘we felt’? What’s with the peculiar grammar? Is the implication that there were lots of complaints and you only agreed with some of them?

And what’s the threat? Why should MN feel it’s difficult to keep open discussions going? Who has the power to force you to police parody songwriting?

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 09/12/2018 14:15

Hi Sophie

I'll resist the temptation to post my short poem about the very model of a busy Mumsnet monitor who, when they notice terfiness, always gets right on it-er, then. Even though it had a good bit rhyming misbehaving & leg-shaving.

You'd think they'd find something better to do, wouldn't you?

NotANotMan · 09/12/2018 14:18

Really Hmm

Oh no, the fun police are at work.

Men are scared that women will laugh at them - and all that.

I feel a need for Pam Ayres and They Should Have Asked My Husband

You know this world is complicated and imperfect and oppressed
And it's not hard to feel timid and apprehensive and depressed

It seems that all around us tides and questions ebb and flow
And people want solutions but they don't know where to go

Opinions abound. But who is wrong and who is right?
No - people need a prophet, a diffuser of the light
Someone they can turn to as the crises rage and swirl.
Someone with the remedy - the wisdom - the pearl

Well, they should have asked my husband... [continues]

If we were to have a contest - who should they have asked?

hipsterfun · 09/12/2018 16:30

Satire doesn’t go down well with authoritarian types, but come on, MN, don’t do their work for them.

LikeDust · 09/12/2018 16:36

I do think it is an unpleasant act of philistine vandalism to delete the artistic posts where people put thought, creativity and flair into their lyrics. There should be some consideration of artistic merit when moderating.

Perhaps even a warning so that we can screencap and keep them before they are zapped.
