Vice: how an online forum for moms became a toxic hotbed of transphobia

Thought people might be interested in this article. One thing that strikes me is the 'reducing women to their biology' argument. Don't transwomen 'know' they're not male because their body feels wrong? Then it is about biology isn't it? Otherwise why do they think they're female?

I reckon they barely read theads

I suspect some make threads that try to get good resposes, like how violent would you be if you wouldn't lose your job.

or that "ALL WOMEN IN THE NEW WORLD ORDER WILL BE IN NAPPIES" troll.

You think some people post threads not to exchange views but to foment controversy and harvest screenshots to post elsewhere? Mercy me. How cunning. contemplates yet again that MN excels at building radicalisation portals but is easy prey to such facile strategies because not one of us has done Organisation and Being Sneaky 101

CaptainKirksSpookyghost · 07/12/2018 19:21

I know ARRAN it's a hard concept to get our heads around isn't it, and a very new thing only just introduced to the site.

MonaTheMonitor · 07/12/2018 19:53

Ahem! Xmas Wink

FatherBuzzCagney · 07/12/2018 20:10

I reckon they barely read theads.

To be fair, that's true of lots of MN posters - a good 70% of AIBU threads are people demanding the OP does things they've said five pages back that they've done.

Talking of AIBU, have Eve and the Monitors (the world's worst indy band? Like a z-grade knock-off of Florence and the Machine but with a reedy voice and even more incoherently self-absorbed, hyperbolic lyrics) ever been there? Because you only need to have spent five minutes there any time in the last decade to see that the 'MN just used to be harmless mumsies talking about nice mumsie things' argument is delusional bollocks. God help you if you've ever wanted to discuss toilet brushes, or how often you change your towels or sheets, or what the main evening meal is called. Expressing a wedding-related opinion on AIBU - pretty much any wedding-related opinion - is much more likely to expose you to a threat of literal violence than anything on this bit of the site. But then that rather spoils their nice, neat narrative, doesn't it?

merrymouse · 07/12/2018 20:24

Agree fatherbuzz, also calling anyone ‘hun’ or any suggestion that the site would be better with those due date/child/dog/cat age counters. Also not many people have an ‘x’s mummy’ nickname, although that might be more about maintaining anonymity.

@2rebecca

there's white and then there is glow white, dazzling if the sun comes out and accidently hits it for that nano second before it turns bright red. in march. ffs

and given the abuse that is thrown at red heads, and our rare status, I suspect that earns us considerable deprivation points. especially as medics clain we are difficult to treat, and do not respond in the same way as other groups.

Is that really so?

I was just musing the other day whilst reading a thread that Hive Mind Collective sounds like rather a good name for a band....

Eve and the Monitors and Hive Mind Collective - quite a double bill.

Binglebong · 07/12/2018 22:31

And on Emma The Brave Whistleblower- Emma, coming from a grown up working a serious industry: causing your employer to have to report themselves to the Information Commissioners Office because of the data breach you caused will not be a good enhancement to your cv. This will affect your employability, because future employers will not care that you believe you were justified. They will perceive you as a risk, and employ the candidate without a record of potential GDPR violations.

Of course, this would have had more impact if MNHQ had reported to the police, as they should have done. I would like to know the ICO's response to this. Particularly as to why it took MNHQ to report. Still angry over the response to this. MumsNet got lucky.

I've heard red heads respond differently in medicine too. Don't know more than that though.

Monitors reminded me more of Enid Blyton's Naughtiest Girl books. I wonder if they have badges?

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 07/12/2018 23:07

'MN just used to be harmless mumsies talking about nice mumsie things' argument is delusional bollocks.

That's exactly what cis women would do though isn't it? Chat about prams & recipes & lipsticks & not much else. And put everyone else first and themselves last. And they're visibly pissed off that we're not living their stereotypes.

UnrelentingFruitScoffer · 07/12/2018 23:13

People on this thread do spend a lot of time talking about bonkers stuff. Perhaps they haven’t got any real problems.

It's piss poor research. I've been a member for around 10 years and back when I joined in Mumsnet was known for being a place of robust discussion. If you wanted to 'hunned' you joined up at the other place. If you wanted to run the risk of being told YABVVU then you joined here.

Sorry if this has been posted earlier on in thread, but for anyone interested and you are on facebook you can post a comment in response to the article.

And the gene for red hair is recessive like that for blue eyes. The brown eyed brunettes will take over the world and we will be like pandas ( but more stroppy)

KindOfAGeek · 08/12/2018 01:07

Joss Prior talking about "confirmation bias".

Now THAT's a hoot and a half.

NotTerfNorCis · 08/12/2018 07:04

Prior specialises in blaming women for the violence and abuse perpetrated against them.

Hey Joss, can you give any actual examples of the 'hate and abuse' Rosa Freedman supposedly 'spread against the trans community ', and evidence of the 'treatment trans people receive because of the propaganda she spreads'? No? Thought not. It's almost like you're using hate speech yourself.

Yes and no. There are a couple mutations linked to the MCR gene (one of the hair colour genes) that can affect the perception of pain. some redheads feel more pain. There are also a couple of Mutations in what are called cytochromes (basically big protein machines that help you metabolise various drugs) that mean that people with them can be unaffected by, or affected less by, anaesthetics, or metabolise them faster.

LikeDust · 08/12/2018 09:10

"Eve and the Monitors" definitely sounds like a bad indie band. "Hive Mind Collective" sounds like a band doomed to failure because they insist on a consensus and the member with the original vision got fucked off and left. I think 'Radicalisation Portal' sounds like a psychedelic prog rock band that tours endlessly - all members have terrible skin through lack of daylight.

AngryAttackKittens · 08/12/2018 09:28

I've got a coworker who's "cunning" in that way. Couldn't think his way out of a wet paper bag, honestly, but he seems to believe he's some sort of modern day Machiavelli.

LangCleg · 08/12/2018 09:32

Do Eve and the Monitors have a revolving line-up?

mirandayardley · 08/12/2018 09:42

That they’re monitoring Mumsnet just shows how little self-awareness they all have. Their own online groups and websites reveal their misogyny, homophobia, outright hate for women and of course are packed with all that autogynephilia that apparently doesn’t exist.

The Facebook group ‘trans rights UK’ is where they coordinate attacks on women individually and women’s grouos. There are other discussion boards like Angels, Susan’s Place and Crossdreamers.

All these places show clearly the transgender community does not support women.

Can't help thinking of the production team Stock, Aitkin & Waterman.
