Vice: how an online forum for moms became a toxic hotbed of transphobia

Thought people might be interested in this article. One thing that strikes me is the 'reducing women to their biology' argument. Don't transwomen 'know' they're not male because their body feels wrong? Then it is about biology isn't it? Otherwise why do they think they're female?

ShockShockShock

Why, the ur-recipe for flapjacks is to be learned from this very place!

SoupDragon be praised!

R0wantrees · 07/12/2018 12:09

I've been wondering who are the TRA's with media contacts who have generated/encouraged this recent flurry of 'anti-mumsnet' articles.

There's often a 'parent of a trans child' (may of course likely be a number of parents wanting to comment on their experience) but can't help wondering if one set of parents are especially well-connected.

Remaining anonymous of course makes it impossible for journalists etc to know how frequently an individual might be quoted.

Hmm
ZuttZeVootEeeVro · 07/12/2018 12:09

Pretty broad definition of womanhood I'd say: "being an adult human female"

Female is the least diverse of all the sexes.

R0wantrees · 07/12/2018 12:10

The vast majority of silent transpeople need to start doing something like contacting their MPs sharpish. Policies are been made for the 'vocal few'.

This ^^

LangCleg · 07/12/2018 12:11

You'll notice that Eve's liberation activism never includes anything that could possibly challenge extant oppressive power structures. It's all about bad taste fancy dress costumes. God forbid Eve should ever attempt to challenge actual power in any way.

hipsterfun · 07/12/2018 12:11

NB You need to scroll down to SD’s recipe. It’s the one with the condensed milk.

She needs to take her own advice:

Allies should be wary of how much space they are taking up in conversation about liberation activism, and in who they might be speaking over when they choose to talk. You should also try to educate yourself instead of demanding the time and energy of those affected to educate you – often oppressed people are expected to take on this labour, another burden caused by their oppression. Many people from oppressed groups have written clearly and comprehensively about these issues, and the vast majority of these resources are available freely online.

As someone said upthread, she's being well and truly played.

ChewyLouie · 07/12/2018 12:18

As littlebrowndog pointed out the sentence by Livingston is absurd but along with The Tranish Inquistion has made me laugh out loud this week. Comedy gold.

Ereshkigal · 07/12/2018 12:22

an especially narrow vision of woman hood - that specifically excludes trans women “

It doesn't "specifically exclude" TW. Any more than it "specifically excludes" Boris Johnson or Kanye West.

They just aren't included, by virtue of the fact that they are adult human males, not adult human females.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 07/12/2018 12:24

Someone said they were curious as to how Eve had been intimidated. Is that something that she wrote about in her article?

I think it was about recipe chat and coded Biscuits.

Popchyk · 07/12/2018 12:24

From the previous link:

"We’ve seen a dedicated campaign against culturally appropriative costumes"

But womanface is fine apparently.

A reminder of the nature of NUS liberation officers/politics including Jess Bradley first NUS Trans Officer (2016-18), founding member of Action For Trans Health & TELI currently suspended pending investigation for alleged 'flashing' at work and in public places.

Jess Bradley's manifesto

Rose of Dawn (transwoman) analyses:
'What Does Co-Opting The Trans Movement Look Like?
Radical far-left activists often co-opt unrelated movements to enforce their ideology on others. Here, I take a look at this phenomenon taking place in the trans community.'

Jess Bradley was certainly liberating something. Just not women.

The range of experience of members is amazing—journalism, PR, law, government and business leadership

OK, what is amazing about that? That people work in those 5 occupational types? Five is not really an amazing range? Its a tiny sample of occupations.

That piece is either cut and pastes of stuff that's been said elsewhere over and over, or pathetic drivel like this "amazing range".

Do I have to keep reading? Weak rubbish. It's Trans PR.

Ereshkigal · 07/12/2018 12:41

Hipster Grin

You naughty coder, you

KatherinaMinola · 07/12/2018 12:41

Haven't read the article yet, but that picture of Nick Clegg ("Behold! I am your Messiah!") and the bored-looking women is gold.

deepwatersolo · 07/12/2018 12:44

Remarkably, the journalist left out the STEM scientists who are also on here, regularly calling bullshit on the 'sex is a spectrum' trope. Would have been too much to acknowledge for their cognitive dissonance, I guess.

ChewyLouie · 07/12/2018 12:44

Empress , so liberating your manhood is no longer considered expressing your womanhood??? Someone tell those poor flashers freezing their balls in this cold weather 😂Honestly how has this twaddle managed to get so far, will make for a really interesting study one day.

Ereshkigal · 07/12/2018 12:44

And the unimpressed little girl! She looks like me reading this article.

arranbubonicplague · 07/12/2018 12:44

who are the TRA's with media contacts who have generated/encouraged this recent flurry of 'anti-mumsnet' articles

I should think there's an extensive notional network of people who were student activists and who were able to obtain internships in useful social media platforms or other media. They are now in their 2nd or even more senior jobs and some might have some commissioning influence...

HerFemaleness · 07/12/2018 12:46

Interesting that nowhere does Eve define what Eve thinks woman and womanhood actually are.

A deliberate omission I would say. When pressed the most genderist ideologues can come out with is some sort of gibberish about biological sex being very complicated, something about intersex people, some sort of comment about neurological sex followed quickly by a denial they're defining womanhood by stereotypes.

The other day I was reading something about creationism, that's the belief that the earth was created in 6 literal days some several thousand years ago. Creationist point to life being very complicated, irreducible complexity is the term they use, meaning it's too complicated to have have occurred randomly.

TRA arguments remind me strongly of that. Life is very complicated therefore goddidit. Sex is very complicated therefore the only thing that makes someone a woman is mystical man or woman essence.

deepwatersolo · 07/12/2018 12:47

Right, Ereshkigal, that narrow vision of womanhood that includes half of all humans on this planet, plus whoever floats in space and is not male.

SophoclesTheFox · 07/12/2018 12:55

It's strange that the worst thing she could muster up in the article was being called a "witless handmaiden", what with all the violent threats and harassment she was getting from gender critical women

That is ver strange. it would be like losing your arm in an accident, but focusing on the fact that you’d lost your watch too. Odd.

Unless one part of it is not wholly true? Heaven forbid!
