Vice: how an online forum for moms became a toxic hotbed of transphobia

Thought people might be interested in this article. One thing that strikes me is the 'reducing women to their biology' argument. Don't transwomen 'know' they're not male because their body feels wrong? Then it is about biology isn't it? Otherwise why do they think they're female?

"But centering the reproductive role of predominantly privileged women..."

What ducking irony! It's actually any women who have less power (proportionately) that are even more affected by their biology.

Why not address the issues and concerns instead of thoeing mud that won't stick!

LangCleg · 07/12/2018 09:03

Morning, Joss! Happy Friday to you!

LangCleg · 07/12/2018 09:04

SistersUncut might have been feminist at one point.

Yes, but very early adopters of the ladypeen.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 07/12/2018 09:08

Uncut has taken on a whole new meaning.

ErrolTheDragon · 07/12/2018 09:08

What the heck do some of these people think feminism should 'center' if not issues directly or indirectly related to women's biology? Confused

DancelikeEmmaGoldman · 07/12/2018 09:13

Men.

Ereshkigal · 07/12/2018 09:16

In a woke, "intersectional" way, of course.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 07/12/2018 09:23

I won't post because I've got my mouth full. Don't usually bother with breakfast but Grin

papayasareyum · 07/12/2018 09:31

this is the very opposite of a well rounded article, in which the "journalist" (and I use that word loosely) is deliberately misrepresenting the content of this forum (and seems not to know much about it) whilst totally ignoring the actions and behaviour of TRAs. Rape and murder threats, physical attacks, urine splashed on office doors, highly regarded University academics living in fear because they dare to doubt the trans cult ideology, offensive words like term and cis thrown around freely, whilst it's forbidden to suggest that trans women do not belong in the category of woman as they're biologically male. This is an irrefutable biological fact, yet people are being threatened with murder for daring to speak it! If the journalist was interested in giving a balanced view of the debate, they could easily have done so. Plenty of information exists in the public realm. Deliberately omitting information and wilfully misunderstanding what people are saying is poor poor journalism.

papayasareyum · 07/12/2018 09:32

terf not term, ffs

Katvonblackdeath · 07/12/2018 09:33

Now call me old fashioned (and obviously a nazi/te*f/phobe/ etc etc)
But I do think the fine activist that is Danielle muscardo (or whatever) probably blotted their copybook here by telling women to "sulk their dick" on international women's day. Now that's just a hunch.

Now we can't block you here Joss, sweetheart, (unlike twatter where you can hide away on mass from nasty women) you can pop in for tea and a biscuit any time you like. Anyone can speak.

But I simply love that y'all peek in. Now I'm sure there are rules that state you shouldn't interact in any way with nasty females (aka te*fs) in case you're swayed by their rational arguments. I hope your crack team of peekers have appropriate re-education and therapy after forcing themselves to read views they don't agree with. Must be so awful to see there's another side. Truly terrible. Should be silenced and my how hard you tried to do that.

Any of you lot pissed on a professors door recently?

Ereshkigal · 07/12/2018 09:35

Yes, write about the bullying of women by transactivists, Eve, I dare you. Interview Rosa Freedman. Write about the situation in Canada with JY. Write something of substance rather than this lazy filler piece which is almost identical to another one published recently.

EmpressAdultHumanFemale · 07/12/2018 09:37

Any of you lot pissed on a professors door recently?

Some people are better equipped to do that than others.

fidgetspinner555 · 07/12/2018 09:37

Eve: not only are you a witless handmaiden, you are also female, white and middle class ie one of those you are criticising. At the moment you have youth on your side but in about 15-20 years you'll too be middle aged and still:

  1. white
  2. middle class

but now
3) a middle aged woman

And the world will tell you that you shouldn't be talking about anything except nappies or what colour lipstick to buy. And you'll wonder why the hell people won't listen to you and criticising you for talking about issues that affect your life or that you know are wrong. How very dare you.

And maybe come back here and wonder why all these women were here on Mumsnet talking about stuff they are entitled to talk about because there is supposedly free speech. See you in 15 years when you look back on your GCSE English project and wonder what the hell you were thinking in criticising females for centering females in their feminism.

Polkasq · 07/12/2018 09:48

Wear what you like, live what you imagine a "female" life to be. But recognise that discussion of biological facts is our freedom of speech, not "hate speech". Yes, we do get to say what we like without your permission.

Ereshkigal · 07/12/2018 09:49

Someone challenged her on her ageism and sexism in calling MN a "harmless" parenting forum before it became infested with gender critical thought:

Ereshkigal · 07/12/2018 09:51

I'm sure she was totes hanging out on MN 10 years ago.

HerFemaleness · 07/12/2018 09:53

Not only have I got some good recipes, (mince pie vodka!)

Ooooh, I need this recipe in my life. Does anyone have it?

MarshaBradyo · 07/12/2018 09:53

The whole thing is a misinterpretation of mn but the bit were it says we’re ‘affronted’ by terms like cis, with those speech marks says it all

So irritating to read such stuff

NotBadConsidering · 07/12/2018 09:53

Someone who monitors tries to police and derail the threads, who has a trans child...maybe they can’t help posting because that reminds me of someone...

OnTheDarkSideOfTheSpoon · 07/12/2018 09:54

Also, whilst it isn't unusual to expect a UK based forum to be predominantly white, it is a bit of a stretch to call us all white and assume that the concerns discussed on these boards don't affect all women. By dismissing these concerns as the preserve of "white feminists", it is erasing women of colour, as well of course being a handy way of silencing all women.

My (very much not white) family are aghast at what has been happening and I know that at least 15 of us completed the GRA consultation with a view that women's rights should be considered and protected. This isn't a race issue, it's a sex one and one that seeks to acknowledge material reality, and trying to claim it as "white feminism" is an easy way to get out of actually listening to us - all of us women.

2rebecca · 07/12/2018 09:56

Which thread did Marc Almond comment on?

OlennasWimple · 07/12/2018 09:57

Re the Mormon transman video - I'm still waiting to read the back story of a trans person who doesn't have some combination of

  • fundamental religion
  • parents with deeply ingrained views on gender roles
  • childhood trauma
  • domestic abuse
  • military service

Every single family history I've read about has at least two of those in common

LangCleg · 07/12/2018 09:59

Someone who monitors tries to police and derail the threads, who has a trans child...maybe they can’t help posting because that reminds me of someone...

I was wondering myself...

Top tip.

If you make damson gin...when you strain out the damsons - save them and mix them into a flapjack mix and bake. They may need some chopping. Totally awesome flapjacks emerge just in time for the festive season.

You are welcome.
