Is this the week they're doing a lot of stuff on gender? Anyway, saw a tweet earlier from Professor Stock that she is on WH this morning. Don't know what time. Should be worth a listen. She is so clear and cogent.

Maybe he/she/it just self ID-ed as one

Electron1 · 19/11/2018 16:59

Yet, Biol sex is a soc construct, not in the sense of denying physical reality (genitals, gonads ... ), but in sense that knowledge about the body is gained through language & because a binary understanding of sex not strictly scientific. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing.

Alex Sharpe is now on that thread saying this, that a little knowledge is a dangerous thing. How can anyone take this person seriously? The knowledge that the human race being a dimorphic species is a dangerous thing? How far up your own fantasy world do you have to travel to say this stuff?

Pathetic

It does give one pause as to what passes for the great minds we'd like to be representative of the research community and fully deserving of the social valorisation that attends such posts.

E pur si muove as I feel Galileo would have said.

madvixen · 19/11/2018 17:05

I think this is running across the whole BBC this week. Radio 5 have a show on it tomorrow with Munroe and Dr Christian.

kesstrel · 19/11/2018 17:18

knowledge about the body is gained through language

So in past centuries, a deaf heterosexual man (pre sign language) would have been unable to distinguish between males and females, and which individuals he was attracted to? Uh-huh.....

The shallowness of these people's thought processes is astonishing. Just say the magic word "discourse" and their brains turn to mush.

needmorespace · 19/11/2018 17:24

I've just listened and I felt Prof Stock was very good (as was JG). The last word from KS around Hines can keep repeating that TWAW does not make it so - fabulous.
I don't think I can bear to listen to tomorrow's show on R5 with Munroe and Harrop - unless it is open to a phone-in.

FekkoThePenguin · 19/11/2018 17:24

I was just going to comment if sign language too! It’s all crap really.

Melamin · 19/11/2018 17:29

Maybe someone could ask Dr Christian what his skin in the game is? It would be interesting to know.

Biologifemini · 19/11/2018 17:36

Really where are the biologists in this?

Leeds surely has an excellent biology dept.
For them to let this continue seriously undermines their credibility.

GoldenPomBearBadge · 19/11/2018 17:37

Can anyone tell me what qualifications Sally Hines has and where from? I’ve done a quick Google and failed. Did she get a phd and become a Dr before she became a professor?

ProfFekkoThePenguiPhD · 19/11/2018 17:40

Same as me I suspect

R0wantrees · 19/11/2018 17:46

Radio 5 have a show on it tomorrow with Munroe and Dr Christian

When is this joy?
I wonder if the interviewer will ask Dr Christian about Dr Helen Webberley / Gender GP / crack down on online clinics etc?

R0wantrees · 19/11/2018 17:48

Sally Hines (Leeds University)

Floisme · 19/11/2018 17:49

Munroe and Harrop? On the same show?
I assume you're going to balance this out BBC?
Can you imagine the outrage if they'd had Prof Stock and Dr Nic on together?
(Although admittedly Harrop is such a liability he may as well be playing for us.)

KatVonGulag · 19/11/2018 17:49

Oh the twitter thread is hilarious.

Silly professor of making stuff up.

If anyone can touch type, it would be marvellous to see the transcript of Professor Stock and Professor Hines comments. Hmm

Fekko ProfFekko
Is that you? May I say it suits you Grin

BoreOfWhabylon · 19/11/2018 17:57

I wish WH would have MrhTake2 on to explain intersex.

ProfessoressWoland · 19/11/2018 17:59

Kat First admitting that sex is a biological fact, and in the next breath claiming that it becomes a social construct by the magic of a single word ("assigned") - I can see why her inner rational voice might be screaming at her to stop this nonsense.

Threewheeler1 · 19/11/2018 18:04

My Mum loves WH.
Bet she was scratching her head today.

hackmum · 19/11/2018 18:11

From Hines's bio on the Leeds University site:

"I am also the Principle Investigator of a 3 year project funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC)"

Let's all take a moment to pause and reflect on the fact that a professor at the University of Leeds doesn't understand the difference between "principle" and "principal".

ProfFekkoThePenguinPhD · 19/11/2018 18:13

😂

GoldenPomBearBadge · 19/11/2018 18:14

That page doesn’t say what her qualifications are or where she got them *

But were you DRFekko prior to being awarded your professorship Fekko?
