Is this the week they're doing a lot of stuff on gender? Anyway, saw a tweet earlier from Professor Stock that she is on WH this morning. Don't know what time. Should be worth a listen. She is so clear and cogent.

I'm listening to it again. After Hines finishes her bizarre speech about sex being assigned to a baby at birth, is it JG who gives that exasperated sigh, or is it KS?

MrsBertBibby · 19/11/2018 13:40

I thought it was JG.

TheMinorityEngineer · 19/11/2018 13:46

FFS, that Sally Hines makes me want to scream.
Living on a different planet.

TheMinorityEngineer · 19/11/2018 14:01

Someone should write to Leeds University to say if SH is a reflection of their intellectual rigour and critical thinking skills, she is a disgrace.

Absolute disgrace.

OrchidInTheSun · 19/11/2018 14:03

Thanks MrsBertBibby - I'd read an article about that but not the one they wrote. The video is great too if you're short of time.

I'm lurching between horrified and amused

Dragon3 · 19/11/2018 14:04

An episode of In Our Time might get there.

Much as I dislike Melvyn Bragg's arrogance, he would eat SH for breakfast.

DodoPatrol · 19/11/2018 14:18

I've just listened to it. I thought both of them stumbled over their words quite a bit.

Though JG did a good job of steering things back on course, I think it needs taking back a step further at the start of each discussion:

-- transwomen are male people who regard themselves as female
-- transmen are female people who regard themselves as male

Discussing this with anyone I know in real life who is over about 18 shows that many people haven't a clue which way round the terms are used. Or they vaguely think it means intersex, not helped by waffly rambling speeches like the one this morning.

Coyoacan · 19/11/2018 14:29

That is absolutely the first time that I've heard a discussion of this issue on the BBC where the last word was given to the gender critical speaker.

I think the BBC may have noted the strength of public disapproval of its complete bias on this subject. But there is going to be major uproar and baying for blood on the part of the transgender movement.

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 19/11/2018 15:02

oh I enjoyed that

both sides got a good opportunity to put their point of view

and that's all we need - a level playing field

once the debate starts the 'sex is socially constructed' mob just sound like the loonies they are

arranfan · 19/11/2018 15:27

applause for Janice Turner using SH's performance on Woman's Hour as an excellent example of the 'sex as social construct farrago of nonsense' she described in her recent piece:

The other week I wrote a column about the spread of batshit post modern gender theory which argues biological sex is a social construct. Lots of pompous woke men who know nothing about this debate, see below, said “yeah literally NO ONE believes that!” (Well worth reading the whole thread.)

hackmum · 19/11/2018 15:32

I notice Stuart Maconie has retweeted Janice's thread - I always suspected he was a good bloke. Also hilarious to see someone respond to him: "it's really sad to see you retweeting this, I used to love listening to you on 6music - not sure I'll be able to do that again now."

The narcissism of these people is quite extraordinary, isn't it?

BernardBlacksWineIcelolly · 19/11/2018 15:35

yay - so pleased to see Stuart Maconie retweeted Janice's thread

rightreckoner · 19/11/2018 15:39

I love his Twitter profile: Courteous, Attentive, Reliable Grin

I actually just fell in love with him for that (disclaimer: my bar is quite low)

ifonlyus · 19/11/2018 15:52

When explaining what 'cis' woman means to SH and used the phrase "women who haven't transitioned" as if we are some kind of tiny minority and transitioning is the norm. Hmm

ProfessoressWoland · 19/11/2018 15:55

That's a great thread, and yes, good to see Stuart Maconie on the side of sanity. I'd love to hear David Shariatmadari's thoughts on Sally Hines's batshit take on biology. He's a Guardian journalist, isn't he? I'm going to quote your employer here, David:

"We are living in dangerous times when dark ideologies flourish, and it’s no surprise that people feel anxious and confused. I know it can sometimes be tempting to turn away from news coverage. But I’m sure you feel, as I do, that we have to understand the world if we’re going to have a chance of making it better for everyone."

SirVixofVixHall · 19/11/2018 16:04

Is Sally Hines trans ?

Bittermints · 19/11/2018 16:06

I don't know, but I'd say not.

ProfessoressWoland · 19/11/2018 16:08

No, she identified herself as a "cis woman" on WH.

FekkoThePenguin · 19/11/2018 16:12

It’s only a matter of time before they want that title too (let them have it)

rightreckoner · 19/11/2018 16:14

We’re all trans on some definitions.

ProfessoressWoland · 19/11/2018 16:16

She is the Professor of Sociology and Gender Studies at Leeds, and as someone pointed out in this thread, has received plenty of research funding from UK Research and Innovation. Hardly a fringe voice.

Zeugma · 19/11/2018 16:18

The thing is, people like Hines seem to think that this whole debate is a purely theoretical argument. Rattling her way through the checklist of assigned at birth, intersex, 'cis women are women who haven't transitioned'.......

You could just imagine all the non-woke listeners to whom this is completely new thinking WHAT. THE. FUCK?

OrchidInTheSun · 19/11/2018 16:26

No she's one of those special cis women who are allowed to talk on behalf of transwomen because she puts them in the same box as black and working class women.

How anyone cannot see that stance is anything other than deeply offensive is beyond me.

Threewheeler1 · 19/11/2018 16:46

OrchidInTheSun
I know, it's completely offensive. They use any minority group they can as cannon fodder without actually giving a shite as to whether that group finds being misappropriated for the trans cause offensive. The whole 'black and working class' women somehow separate to the general term of 'women' was a real barrel scraper.

KatVonGulag · 19/11/2018 16:51

That Hines woman is a professor?!
Blimey. The bar is lower than I thought.
