Gather LM is saying that they had to give up the previous post because they left the area (to go to Goldsmiths) but they're now standing for the women's officer post in Lewisham Deptford CLP. Voting is on Sunday, apparently.

What is their justification though? They want a trans pet or someone to actually do something for women... Ohhh huh.

KatVonGulag · 24/10/2018 13:18

Words can not even begin to describe my anger over this.

Why have these posts if they are meaningless? Imagine I stood for lgbt officer? According to stonewall I'm a lesbian (as my hubbie cross dresses sometimes...I know right). Imagine the arrogance id have to have to imagine I could speak for lgbt people.

Lily is being used, and the pressure will be too much. That is a clearly vulnerable individual.

So fucking cross

I don't understand how party politics works at local level and I certainly don't understand Momentum.

Have I got this right, though?

The Lewisham Deptford Constituency Labour Party has officers who get elected by the membership once a year.

Anybody could put their name forward and put out a statement explaining what they have to offer. Presumably some years only one person stands and gets elected by default, other years nobody does and there has to be a bit of arm-twisting, some years there's actually a contest.

But now we have Momentum sending through an approved list to its members as its slate. To get on that slate it's not enough to be a Momentum member/activist. You have to be the one the central leadership most favours.

So members are in the odd position that there are two Momentum candidates to choose from when they vote for their new Women's Officer. Are there any other candidates?

One of the Momentum candidates has lived in the area for decades and has a terrific track record of grass roots activism.

The other one doesn't. But that's the one favoured by Momentum leadership.

Is Momentum so totalitarian that they will be watching who people vote for? Is it a secret ballot?

None of this makes me want to vote for Labour, it's almost needless to add. This isn't democracy as I understand it.

FesteringCarbuncle · 24/10/2018 13:31

From the outside it seems Momentum want to get rid of actual women

Bonions · 24/10/2018 13:53

LM following the “we are still here” advice faithfully

OMG! Voting! Whoever allowed voting?

cardibach · 24/10/2018 15:32

I’ve just been a bit brave and shared CAAKE ‘s screenshot I my CLP Women’s Forum page. I await COMPLIANCE. Our candidate last GE was a woman and is quietly gender critical, so we’ll see.

Gncq · 24/10/2018 15:40

CAAKE
Just... wow.
As if for starters a TW such as Lily will ever experience period poverty!
As for all the rest that 'pertain directly to having female anatomy'.... fuck me who do these people think they are!

Gncq · 24/10/2018 15:42

^ you know for the first time I feel hurt and distressed actually referring to this person as a transwoman. There's nothing 'woman' about them. They are a pisstaking dude. Not even a dude in a dress or a dude in a wig. Just a dude dude.

FekkoTheLawyer · 24/10/2018 16:11

Transvestite and transsexual. That's the terminology we used. Now the kids seem to think they can change sex by wishes. Or by sticking a pink bow onto one of your trainers, apply some red nail polish to your bitten finger nails and dying your long hair blonde - so was this a man or a woman I stood next to at the bus stop today? I'd say a man but who the hell knows these days?

Bonions thanks for that screenshot. So yet again little Lily is being a completely vacant mouthpiece for something they have never experienced, will never experience, and have not actually done anything for, bar an inappropriate gimmicky photo.

Beggars belief.

I made my own photo...

Yes, Labour/Momentum, we hear you loud and clear: women can only represent women, while men can represent everyone.

Much woke. So progressive.

ilivethere · 24/10/2018 17:18

I’m a mumsnet lurker but wanted to register to say this.

I live in the area this is happening. I know of Gill (who is running as women officer against lily) because she runs a baby singing group twice a week as a volunteer at the new cross learning centre which which she runs as a volunteer and I believe led the campaign to keep it open. It is a vital resource in the community.

I don’t know her well at all but from what I’ve seen she is an amazing women. Funny, kind, inclusive and strong. Giving up her time to help her community but also fun, approachable and engaging.

I was a new mother at her group. It was one of the things I dared to first go to with my screaming baby. She memorises every child’s name so she can sing them hello. Every single one! There are sometimes 20plus children which change each week. Yet every week she remembers the children’s names. I didn’t go for 5 months and she still knew my daughter when we went back. It’s a diverse baby group made of many of langages and nationalities - she makes everyone feel included and part of it. That is a real skill. She made a big impression on me straight away.

She is just the sort of person I would feel comfortable talking to or wanting to take advice from. Someone who really gets women and the issues they face. But, maybe more importantly for this area someone who is accessible and easy to talk to, for not just me but all different types of women. I don’t know a lot about her campaigning but I get the impression she is absolutely vital to the area and truly dedicated to helping it.

The area around here has a lot of issues. Poverty, drug use and refugees etc. These are deep complex issues with very alienated members of society who need practical help and representation. I struggle to understand how someone young who has lived here less than a month could even start to understand or comprehend the issues of the women here who need help the most. I’ve lived here for 6 years and I would definitely not feel I am equipped to understand the difficulties here. This area needs hands on, down to earth help from someone who gets it. Not political show boating and airy, ideals.

Anyway, this all sounds a bit like a rant. I guess it is. I just can’t understand in what way Lily could be able to better serve this community’s needs more than someone like Gill. It seems so unfair and frankly so uncaring from the powers backing her. It really shows they don’t care about this area at all.

I don’t have a problem with Lily. I just think it’s so unfair that if it was anyone else with little track record and experience they wouldn’t stand a chance against someone with Gills dedication and hard work in the area. I actually don’t know Gill that well either. We are not friends or anything but like I said she always made an impression on me.

I’m all for a fair fight and democracy but I just hope this women’s officer position isn’t decided on by people who don’t care at all about this community. That someone isnt voted in for the wrong reasons because this election has become some kind of trendy, political, woke off. I just hope everyone who votes does so for the right reasons - for who they truly think will serve the diverse women of the area the best - it’s that simple.

PyeWackets · 24/10/2018 17:34

It seems women and women's experience are taken for granted nowadays. I hope I'm proved wrong.

littlbrowndog · 24/10/2018 17:41

Yeah ilivehere it’s a pack of shite when someone like gill is not favoured cos trans is the flavour of the day to the woke dudes
They should be fucking ashamed of themselves as should Madigan
Fucking ashamed
And if the Madigan really wants to learn how to be a women’s officer Madigan should be shadowing someone like gill not standing against her
Fucking shameful

AngryAttackKittens · 24/10/2018 17:50

That's a good point actually. When I was that age I tried to learn as much from the older women around me as I could. Why isn't Lily doing that?

RedToothBrush · 24/10/2018 17:52

This is politics as a fashion accessory. Not politics which helps people.

FekkoTheLawyer · 24/10/2018 17:57

Because boys trump women every time.

EssentialHummus · 24/10/2018 18:24

Like ilivethere I, er, live there and attend Gill’s singing sessions. She has a wonderful ability to connect with just about everyone who comes through the door, to make them feel welcome, and to foster a sense of community. Gill is an exceptional woman and a real community champion.

FekkoTheLawyer · 24/10/2018 18:28

Well all she has to do is say that she was actually born Gregor and has a willy, and hey presto, winner.

RedToothBrush · 24/10/2018 18:54

A pet hate of the labour voting electorate is parachuting in a middle class politician. Particularly if its at the expense of a well known and appreciated local.

Cos nothing says you care about working class communities like shitting all over someone with a proved local record, in favour of a fuckwit careerist.

KittyKlawsReturns · 24/10/2018 19:04

Ilivethere Gill sounds wonderful and perfect as a Woman's Officer. The fact this is happening is undemocratic and a travesty. I sincerely hope Gill wins - she deserves it and it sounds like the community need her.

hackmum · 24/10/2018 19:05

That's a lovely tribute, ilivethere. I've been reading on Facebook about the other amazing community work Gill has done over the years. She sounds like an exceptional woman.

I can't tell you angry I am at all this. What kind of woman-hating moron would you have to be to vote for Lily Madigan over someone like that?

Ereshkigal · 24/10/2018 19:33

Not sure of the source of this screen shot but it's from Twitter re: FB discussion of the Lewisham-LM-momentum business).

It's Lewisham Momentum FB page I think. I have two screenshots I took of that exchange.
