Gather LM is saying that they had to give up the previous post because they left the area (to go to Goldsmiths) but they're now standing for the women's officer post in Lewisham Deptford CLP. Voting is on Sunday, apparently.

Thanks @Smeerf, I’ll be there!

"For them, this is just about validating Lily’s identity, because it shows how deep and profound and accepting they are."

Yes it's a performance of inclusivity that seems to confirm that the speakers don't genuinely believe that the person addressed is female, as that isn't how female people in the same position are usually spoken to. A female person who made a video matching that one would endure much criticism (or be ignored entirely) because of the lightweight nature of the political goals, the lack of proven history in the local area or of organising, the lack of connections to local orgs and community, the age and inexperience of the person, and frankly their appearance, voice and delivery. I'm not saying the last few are fair, I'd consider them pretty sexist and judgmental in most cases, but the fact is that a female person doing similar to this would be torn apart.

Can you imagine the response to a female person standing for a position in Labour begging for personal financial support on twitter? Wouldn't be good.

I think it was one of posies YouTube videos where she said about People assuming that of they are kind enough and nice enough and inclusive enough it will be ok. Nothing will happen to them

ShotsFired · 25/10/2018 14:53

smeerf Maybe we should make little FWR badges to identify ourselves on occasions like this.

Write it on your hands in black marker pen?

Write it on your hands in black marker pen?

:D

I have a theory...

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-hampshire-45978590

Young 'uns don't mature very early these days. I guess its because we have had child labour laws for a while (no kids up chimneys) and with so many are going into higher education, they don't see the real wold until they are in their 20s.

Maybe we should raise the age of public office holders?

BertrandRussell · 25/10/2018 15:16

What I find frustrating is that, leaving all aspects of sex and gender aside, one of these people is overwhelmingly better qualified for the job than the other.......l

RiverTam · 25/10/2018 15:18

well, quite! Out with the old and in with the new, eh, even when you're using the facility that the old voluntarily saved.

OlennasWimple · 25/10/2018 15:47

WTf does "being at the pinnacle of oppression" mean? Confused

FloralBunting · 25/10/2018 15:56

Olenna I missed that, where is it from?

JoanSummers · 25/10/2018 15:58

At the top of the oppression Olympics pyramid I guess. For people who are so unoppressed that they have time to play competitions over who is worse off.

RedToothBrush · 25/10/2018 15:59

"being at the pinnacle of oppression"

It means being good at PR of Grieveance Studies.

FloralBunting · 25/10/2018 16:05

Oh, I see. Essentially it's a description of someone using 'oppression' as a means of gaining power. Textbook LM I would say then.

OlennasWimple · 25/10/2018 16:09

Floral - I took one for the team and watched the whole LM election video

I must have watched a very different video to the one watched by everyone who commented on it on LM's Twitter feed - it was stilted, barely coherent in places and very lightweight

FekkoThePenguin · 25/10/2018 16:20

Better than usual then?

FloralBunting · 25/10/2018 16:20

Olenna, blimey, that's commitment. Well done. Did LM say they were at the pinnacle of oppression? I'm interested in the context here. Quite revealing if they did.

waterlego6064 · 25/10/2018 16:22

I thought so too Olennas Lily is young, which is not a bad thing in itself- plenty of young people have excellent ideas and passion for politics. But Lily doesn’t seem to be one of them.

Lily’s delivery did not feel impassioned. It sounded like someone reading from a cue.

Can someone link to Lily’s campaign speech? I can’t find it.

OlennasWimple · 25/10/2018 16:41

Here's the link to LM's spiel: Tweet thread:

LM says something like being reminded of the need for "practical intersectional feminism" (which is why LM phoned three schools to ask if they needed any tampons - didn't actually do anything about it, mind, just made some calls). And that LM would work for women "at the pinnacle of oppression" Hmm

littlbrowndog · 25/10/2018 16:46

I thought it was pinnacles of oppression.

Hahah Madigan having a laugh 😂
Feck what a
Oh well pinnacles of oppression

FloralBunting · 25/10/2018 16:48

Yes, that's interesting. As suspected, the phraseology suggests a hierarchy and LM is seeing the usefulness of being notionally involved in 'oppression' for the opportunity of power that this will entail.

Obviously, I'm being generous with the analysis here, LM has form for not really understanding the vocab they use, so it may well not be quite as sinister as that - but the clear implication is LM sees this as leverage rather than anything else.

BettyDuMonde · 25/10/2018 16:53

To the L&D members on this thread who are attending on Sunday - firstly, you rock.

Secondly, please, please, post live updates from the meeting? 🙏 Grin

JoanSummers · 25/10/2018 17:22

They were, definitely. The video has all the giveaway pauses and looking just off camera.

Did you catch the dupers delight smile when Madigan says they won't lie?

whitershadeofpale · 25/10/2018 17:47

@BettyDuMonde live updates ahead!
