The Times investigation - paedophile in women's prison

The Sunday Times have followed up on yesterday's article about the convicted sex offender placed in New Hall prison (which worryingly has a mother and baby unit).
Further details about the prisoner's long list of sexual offences and predatory behaviour towards women and children - which makes it unbelievable that the Ministry of Justice would have placed them in a women's prison. Share token here:

Another great article from Andrew. Thank you. It is appalling that such a dangerous male was placed in a women’s prison with so much evidence of the risk he poses on file.

TheKrakening3 · 09/09/2018 08:02

Great article. It is appalling that women prisoners have been forced into being the canaries in the coal mine.

Starkstaring · 09/09/2018 08:07

From another thread, I learnt that transgender prisoner requests are reviewed by a process which Gendered Intelligence helped inform. I wonder if anyone representing the interests of vulnerable women helped inform that process?

numberseven · 09/09/2018 08:08

OMFG. This should be shared everywhere.

PutItAwayDear · 09/09/2018 08:10

What the absolute fuck?

"Wood had a history of seeking access to mixed and women’s institutions to find and abuse vulnerable people. As well as the bail hostel and the prison, she said, police told her Wood had gained admission to a mixed psychiatric ward, where he had repeatedly raped a young woman patient suffering from Asperger’s syndrome. "

What.

The.

Fuck?

And police and probation and the courts and the whole lot of them had access to that information and still went "yep here we have a genuine womanly woman who should be placed in the women's estate".

What can we actually do about this??

HawkeyeInConfusion · 09/09/2018 08:12

Great article.

But appalling that it ever needed to be written. This should never have been allowed to happen. Those women were failed by the system and safeguards that should have protected them.

Out of curiosity, I wonder what was the make up of the panel that approved the move? Were there any women on the panel?

numberseven · 09/09/2018 08:12

In the women's estate with a mother and baby unit no less. A convicted paedophile rapist.

Gncq · 09/09/2018 08:15

Briscoe, now a senior therapist at a charity, said Wood had a history of seeking access to mixed and women’s institutions to find and abuse vulnerable people. As well as the bail hostel and the prison, she said, police told her Wood had gained admission to a mixed psychiatric ward, where he had repeatedly raped a young woman patient suffering from Asperger’s syndrome

Shock they knew THIS and just moved him in with vulnerable women where they share showers and sleeping areas.
Shock just fuck. This. Shit.

GenderApostate · 09/09/2018 08:19

This needs to be brought up in Parliament, PM’s Questions.
It’s an utter disgrace , there should be a massive lawsuit from every Woman made to share prison space with this vile, predatory Man.

tiredandweary · 09/09/2018 08:21

The Times (Andrew Gilligan yet again) has another article about a transgender woman seeking to have their crimes committed as a man erased from their record. He points out that if the principle is agreed to by the court, then rape and other sexual offences would be included:

I want this all to go away. It's horrific. I feel so powerless.

BettyDuMonde · 09/09/2018 08:31

This case (before the public were aware of it) was brought to my MPs attention in a one to one meeting, yet she STILL won’t publicly express a pro women and girls opinion.

And she was a beneficiary of an all woman shortlist.

I sure hope that anyone harmed by White while in a government facility sues.

Happy to donate for a Crowdfunder for the legal fees.

PineappleSunrise · 09/09/2018 08:35

As the details of this story come out, the utter failure of due diligence on the part of the prisons service is appalling. This must not ever happen again.

Floisme · 09/09/2018 08:35

I’m only a couple of paragraphs in but the barrister representing the transgender prisoner seeking to have their criminal record wiped is named as Claire McCann, who has tweeted about speaking at the WEP conference yesterday. (Sorry - on phone and not worked out how to link but it’s easy to find.)

I think McCann may also feature in the Jess Bradley threads, possibly the second one.

MsBeee · 09/09/2018 08:37

Ive already written about this on the other White thread.

There also needs to be an investigation into how these crimes are recorded. Male or female ?????
Crime stats must be by natal sex.

Also procedures for changing documents.

Floisme · 09/09/2018 08:38

R0wan has of course spotted it too and raised it on the Karen White thread - with links.

Floisme · 09/09/2018 08:40

Soz cross post - talking about Claire McCann and relationship with WEP.

Rumbledore · 09/09/2018 08:46

I have no words. Sickening,

Juells · 09/09/2018 08:48

What's all the fuss about? It's only women, who cares?

Juells · 09/09/2018 08:50

I sure hope that anyone harmed by White while in a government facility sues.

Happy to donate for a Crowdfunder for the legal fees.

Me too. Until organisations start being sued they won't give a shit, they're too focussed on not upsetting MEN.

Floisme · 09/09/2018 09:04

How do you go about pushing for an enquiry? The article reports the prison service as saying they don’t know if there will be one.

Datun · 09/09/2018 09:24

Something is beginning to worry me.

A paedophile and self-confessed rapist who has documented form for specifically gaining access to vulnerable women has been given access to confined vulnerable women and children.

It's so out of order that I'm convinced the public outrage will serve to set the ball rolling in terms of addressing the issue.

This specific issue.

But has it moved the Overton window?

Is the public's tolerance for 'lesser' outrages higher, as a result. Transwomen with more minor offences, for example. Changing rooms, etc.

I can't think it's a deliberate tactic, but I do think it will be exploited.

radlyreading · 09/09/2018 09:27

Oh dear god. I counted at least eleven attacks listed in that article.

ABitCrapper · 09/09/2018 09:31

I actually can't bear to read the article based on the comments here.
I am so cross and feel so impotent to do anything about this crock of shit.

Absolutely unacceptable policy. Disastrous and appalling.

OnlyObjectivity · 09/09/2018 09:46

The simple reason "why" this happened is because the guidelines say it should.

See section 6 of this Word document here: t.co/5KnWmGSEdy

Note the wording: "female transsexual prisoner with a GRC had to be transferred to the female estate even though one of her index offences was attempted rape of a woman"

This is what happens when men "legally" become women.

The only way they can refuse (presumably in line with the Equality Act) as it states in the guidelines, is if the transwomen is so dangerous that a natal woman of the same "security profile" would be housed in a male prison under the same circumstances.
