Poor woman..
Porn has made choking etc mainstream, whether women want it or not. Now what people do in their own time in private as consenting adults is up to them BUT when acts like this become expected more widely this is one of the results.
The bus stop case was really chilling - the defence basically tried to say that she had a prior interest in choking and so naturally this was just sex gone wrong. how can that possibly be seen as a reasonable defence?
So you’re now seeing a situation where a man cuts a woman’s throat during sex and the defence is that ‘oh it’s just sex gone wrong.’ Again, how can that possibly be seen as reasonable? He had a knife under his pillow? She just rolled into it?
Now if you wake up in the middle of the night and someone is breaking into your home and you grab a knife from the kitchen in self defence that’s seen very differently to having a weapon in/by the bed, because the latter presumes you’re tooled up for violence. But having a knife under your pillow and using it during sex? Totally fine! 🤦🏻♀️
And let’s look at the weighting given to their histories.
He has a record of violent behaviour, confirmed by police and the courts.
She has no criminal record but apparently has had slightly edgy sex in the past.
So his real, documented history of violence is ignored but her alleged Non violent preferences mean he gets a light sentence.
Fuck. That. Shit.
Yes, words fail me. This has it all doesn’t it? Double standards, victim blaming, victim shaming, life being cheap... the lot. God it must be so frustrating being a copper and seeing all your work to bring people like this to court just dashed.
Urgh.
