Feminism: Sex and gender discussions

I am a science teacher teaching secondary sex education and genetics

Ever single time. Every single time. Every single time.

I am being asked how men turn into women.

I say they can't. They turn into transwomen. These are men who change their bodies to be as much like women as possible, but are still men.

Every single time I teach pregnancy I am asked how men can do it.

Every single time we go through genetics I get a shocked response for saying "this is male, this is female"

Every single time I make any distinction between male and female I am asked "are you allowed to say that?

I equate being ordered to teach that men can become woman to previous generations of teachers being ordered to teach nazi race science.

I am quite sure I will be sacked one day

I’ve taught secondary and FE level science for ten years and have literally never been asked this.

GibbertyFlibbert · 10/06/2018 18:46

Terfulike seems to be arguing that it is possible to change sex but not gender

Bowlofbabelfish · 10/06/2018 18:48

Terfulike is not arguing that at all.

Can you please explain to me how one changes sex?

daimbars · 10/06/2018 18:55

Do you know what Pratchet on the balance of probabilities yes, I think that Twitter poster is lying. I do not believe the school nurse 'wanted' the child on hormones. I can believe the school nurse supported the child who wished to take hormones and understood their dysphoria (don't forget this is the child's POV) but 'wanted' them to take them to the extent of pushing this opinion on them? No.

If we're going down this road, do you think Jazz Jennings' parents are lying?

Pratchet · 10/06/2018 18:58

I can't click on the link. What do they say?

thebewilderness · 10/06/2018 18:58

Daimbars, your beliefs are irrelevant. You are entitled to them, but using them as a basis for argument is inappropriate.

TheHandThatRocksTheCradleRules · 10/06/2018 19:00

I note there are lots of therapists in the Jennings family. I observed the Dad seems to have distress at the thought of genital surgery, the Mum seems numb of emotions other than excitement.

Picassospaintbrush · 10/06/2018 19:00

Blimey, Jazz Jennings parents. Deconstruct that parental mess. Over to you Daim.

Bowlofbabelfish · 10/06/2018 19:03

Blimey. R D Laing would have a field day ....

Clairetree1 · 10/06/2018 19:03

^Even nearly 50 years ago the understanding of sex was much broader than that swarb.co.uk/corbett-v-corbett-otherwise-ashley-fd-1-feb-1970/^

These days our understanding is much more advanced. You are quite simply wrong.

I am quite simply right, there is really nothing more to it than that.

There are a tiny number of rare disorders which might make one sex look like the other, and lead to mistakes being made, but that doesn't change anything.

In certain lights my Mum's dog looks like a cat, doesn't make her a cat, just a misidentified dog, so what?

Not sure it's a good idea to goad me into defamation territory. The parent of Twitter cares so greatly for her child that she has remained anonymous.

Pratchet · 10/06/2018 19:06

You are right, Claire.

thebewilderness · 10/06/2018 19:06

Google Munchausen by proxy, but i warn you will have a sad.
Jennings is probably going to be presented in the future as a case study of Munchausen by proxy for fame and fortune.

daimbars · 10/06/2018 19:06

This might work better

m.youtube.com/watch?feature=youtu.be&v=G7jXN5n96yI

I don't think they are making it up.

Pratchet · 10/06/2018 19:07

Well, that's confirmation bias for you. I can't click because data. What are they saying?

Clairetree1 · 10/06/2018 19:08

"XX and XY are genotypes, not a karyotypes"

Strictly yes, but it makes no difference

it makes all the difference in the world, the two words mean different things, and your incorrect (ie scientifically completely wrong) use of the word "karyotype" implies that the genotype isn't a genotype, when it is.

Also implies you don't know anything about genetics!

I'm a geneticist. I studied at university and gained a degree

I do wander exactly what people think they can learn about genetics from sound bites of political propaganda or agenda driven comic books

Intersex conditions are OUTLIERS and they don't disprove the rule that sex is binary.

That is the correct way to phrase this.

TornFromTheInside · 10/06/2018 19:09

Someone doesn't have to be lying to be wrong.

HornyTortoise · 10/06/2018 19:12

Ooh another thread with 'advanced' biology. I love these, especially when people who clearly know nothing about science and are pretty much just copy pasting transactivists soundbites and links to studies that do not prove what they think they prove. argue with Babel Grin

mancheeze · 10/06/2018 19:12

Also translobbies are extremely fraudulent in promoting faulty claims like the idea that transgenderism has a biological etiology and so forth or that men have a female brain. All bollox

There is NO evidence of a biological etiology. Just wishful thinking

GibbertyFlibbert · 10/06/2018 19:13

"Intersex conditions are OUTLIERS and they don't disprove the rule that sex is binary."

If sex is a binary distributionthere cannot be outliers. There are outliers so sex cannot be a binary distribution. That is scientific fact.

Bowlofbabelfish · 10/06/2018 19:17

Intersex is a developmental error.
Human sex is binary. There are two sexes, male and female. Everyone, including people who are intersex, and people with DSDs, is either Male or female. There is no distribution along a spectrum. You are Male, or you are Female.

Can I ask if you’re a working scientist?

And also, if you wouldn’t mind, if you’d expand on how humans can change sex. I’m still waiting expectantly for the answer

Bowlofbabelfish · 10/06/2018 19:18

gibb

When one is debating and trying to explain something, one does not Park a link down. Especially not an op ed piece.

One explains one’s position in terms that the listeners/reader can understand. If you’re asserting that humans can change sex, I’d like you to explain HOW they change sex. In your own words.

mancheeze · 10/06/2018 19:18

Perhaps in the dark, world of Reddit if you search hard enough but no reputable organisation is advocating this.

Hmm

BTW, I don't take anything daim says seriously. It's quite clear that if you're willing to put blockers into kids arms, you're willing to go further and further.
