I've just seen in Twitter that she was attacked by a random man in the street! She hasn't said why yet.

I am just Shock that this is happening in 2018

(I hope it's okay to post this here. I imagine people will want to discuss it)

bewilderness I was echoing other posters who said this - my belief (after ten years living there) is that an attack like this on a woman is extremely rare and unlikely to be random (as one could argue in a less safe place.)
Doubly so because ‘opportunist’ attacks on women tend to have the perpetrator scarper if challenged - for a man who came to her aid to be knocked out too - I wonder if this was a targeted attack.

I probably phrased it badly.

thebewilderness · 28/05/2018 19:56

Sorry. Didn't mean to target you, Bowlofbabelfish.
I just don't get it when people(general people) talk as though women should expect to be assaulted in this place but not in that place.
Women are trying to survive in a hostile worldwide environment and so having a place designated as safe right after a woman is assaulted ramps my WTF meter over to maximum.

I sorta get it but not really.

Is this the incident? Fountainbridge casino is part of a cinema complex , although the cinemas would be closed by the. It is also right beside a large number of new, purpose built student flats. I think there is a pizza place as well. It is a pretty safe area - at 1 a.m on a Saturday I would expect it to have people around.

BertrandRussell · 28/05/2018 20:09

I would be amazed if any attack on Magdalen Burns is random.

LassWiADelicateAir · 28/05/2018 20:12

I've lived in Edinburgh since 1987. I've walked home countless times late at night. I think of it as a very safe city.

Bowlofbabelfish · 28/05/2018 20:13

I actually used to live in fountainbridge....the roads running off from the cinema up to bruntsfield way are imo not the safest bit of Edinburgh, despite the cinema being fairly safe (layout gives good visibility and camera coverage.) it’s not the worst place but it’s not safe as houses around there either. The block I used to live in was plagued with crime and grim behaviour (drug and cigarette dealing, usual crap.) but I’m still surprised by the incident - it is fairly unusual for Edinburgh. As a woman it’s somewhere I felt fairly safe and would walk or run alone and I can’t say that for many other places I’ve lived.

Totally get what you’re saying bewilderness - And no by definition it’s not safe as she was assaulted. I put it poorly and certainly not meaning to offend.

There was a serious incident on the road I lived on when I lived there but If I’d walked home from town in general I’d rather have gone that way than over the meadows.

It strikes me as unusual in the spitting/assault/going after someone who helped. It just makes me wonder if it was random or someone targeted her. The casino isn’t somewhere people drink heavily - it’s not a hotspot for people coming out of pubs pissed looking for a fight iyswim.

No point speculating I suppose - there are cameras there, let’s hope they got a good look at whoever did this. :/

BertrandRussell · 28/05/2018 20:20

My dd lives in Edinburgh. She feels that it's a very safe city.

Waddlelikeapenguin · 28/05/2018 20:27

Another Edinburgh girl saying that it does rather set the spider senses off because it isnt a usual Edinburgh problem but I do take bewilderness' point.

LassWiADelicateAir · 28/05/2018 20:29

Fountainpark has changed a lot. The cinema complex is now surrounded by very swanky purpose built student flats and quite upmarket flats and a new hotel.

TERFragetteCity · 29/05/2018 07:26

Wow.

Magdalen Berns has been beaten up!
Bowlofbabelfish · 29/05/2018 07:56

That tweet is sickening.

She was asking for it, it’s not as bad as she said, save your sympathy blah blah. Utterly foul. Not a shred of sympathy for a woman attacked in the street - and the man knocked out helping her. Disgusting.

That area should have good camera coverage - let’s hope they get the perp.

FlippinFumin · 29/05/2018 07:59

In the news report it says she was spat on first, that is something very personal, to spit on someone. And very disgusting, and violent and degrading.

SpikyCoconut · 29/05/2018 08:15

This is awful :( I love her. She's so intelligent and her voice is really calming.

TERFragetteCity · 29/05/2018 08:16

I think Ariel does what he can to peak trans the world. I mean most men usually at least pretend to look concerned when a woman is beaten up. Ariel shows us what really happens is that they just don't believe a word or it. Which is why only 0.7% of rapes ever get any punishment.

Men just do not believe it and think women are lying.

Thanks Ariel. Flowers

cuirderussie · 29/05/2018 08:59

Well there were TRAs making fun of her brain cancer so nothing would surprise me.

Ereshkigal · 29/05/2018 09:12

think Ariel does what he can to peak trans the world

That's what I was thinking. We couldn't possibly do a better character assassination or attack on their credibility than they do themselves. Cheers Ariel, you saved me a job Thanks

LangCleg · 29/05/2018 09:29

We couldn't possibly do a better character assassination or attack on their credibility than they do themselves.

Yep.

TheChampagneGalop · 29/05/2018 09:56

I've been so worried about her since I read her tweet, it's at least a relief to hear that she and the man who helped her only got minor injuries, according to that article.

And I also HIGHLY doubt it was a random attack.

TheChampagneGalop · 29/05/2018 09:57

That man who attacked her = scum. Even more so if he knew she got brain cancer. Christ.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 29/05/2018 10:42

Magdalen is not 35 years old! That article can't be about her.

Edinburgh is probably as safe as any other city, but random violence does happen. And certainly there are some dodgy areas of Edinburgh. Leith, for example, has been gentrified greatly but there are still parts and pubs I wouldn't go near.

TheChampagneGalop · 29/05/2018 11:14

That would mean another, completely identical assault took place.

cuirderussie · 29/05/2018 11:19

Assigned, Magdalen's LinkedIn account goes back to 2001, I'm pretty sure that's her correct age. She was a mature student.

Prawnofthepatriarchy · 29/05/2018 11:30

That tweet is atrocious! I don't see any "beautiful" about it.

Incidentally, how many adult women would name themselves after a child's cartoon mermaid?

Nhsbytes · 29/05/2018 11:32

Who is she if you don't mind me asking?

SardineReturns · 29/05/2018 11:34

Nhsbytes has just started an interesting new thread, and been reported straight away.

Just FYI.
