I've just seen in Twitter that she was attacked by a random man in the street! She hasn't said why yet.

I am just Shock that this is happening in 2018

(I hope it's okay to post this here. I imagine people will want to discuss it)

I find it quite worrying too; Edinburgh is indeed a very safe city. Attacks like this are extremely rare - there's usually a robbery or sexual assault motive if a young woman is attacked. I don't like the sound of it at all, given how brave and out there Magdalen is. Brew Flowers to her.

AngryAttackKittens · 28/05/2018 00:31

I also know Edinburgh well enough for this to strike me as unlikely to be random.

LassWiADelicateAir · 28/05/2018 00:48

I walked home on my own on Saturday night from the Festival Theatre leaving at around 10.45. My route home involved Victoria Street, the Grassmarket and Lothian Road from the Usher Hall down to Princes' Street. There were quite a lot of drunk men and women around, particularly in the Grassmarket and several hen parties. No one paid me the slightest bit of attention and I didn't feel in any way at risk. No one was bothering any of the hen parties either.

Terfing · 28/05/2018 01:29

I would imagine the police have asked Magdalen to keep quiet about the attacker's identify and not post anything identifying online. If she did, it could ruin any trial, I think? It's best not to speculate until we have facts.

Just what I was thinking.

HelenaDove · 28/05/2018 01:39

Magdelen Thanks

sleepingdragons · 28/05/2018 02:00

bd67th I only just got your post. I'm slow tonight! Yes, I'm sure you're right.

ThistleAmore · 28/05/2018 03:17

You're quite right, @Terfing.

Good, healing thoughts to all affected in the short term.

NotMeOhNo · 28/05/2018 03:55

Just tried to pop a very small amount into Magdalen's PayPal but it says I have to pay a $5.99 transaction fee? That's almost doubling my cost! Is this normal? (am poor at the moment)

sleepingdragons · 28/05/2018 10:06

@NotMeOhNo

In general, for any paypal transaction if you're not buying products or services then you need to tick the box that says you're sending money to friends and family, then you don't pay the fee.

But also - this sounds weird as it's in dollars. Are you sure you've got the right account? Did you copy and paste it or type it in? Magdalen's name is easy to misspell.

Maybe ebay always puts the fee in dollars.

But also, it's a sounds like a lot of money.

Something isn't quite right...

I don't

sleepingdragons · 28/05/2018 10:08

Oops, random "I don't"!!

I was going to say, I'd go back to her youtube or twitter and start again. Follow the link, check the friends and family box and you should be in the right place.

NotMeOhNo · 28/05/2018 12:19

I don't think there was a family and friends box to tick, but there was one I unchecked to say it wasn't a product or service. I'm not in the UK.

sleepingdragons · 28/05/2018 13:11

NotMeOhNo silly me, assuming you were in the UK, sorry!

It's still a large amount! Perhaps you have high PayPal fees in your country? But as you're not buying a product or service you don't need the PayPal protection that the fee covers - you're giving your money away to a good cause, you're hardly going to ask for it back, are you?!

sleepingdragons · 28/05/2018 13:13

R0wantrees that's very interesting.

Apologies for my ignorance but does "Policy Adviser" mean he's actually part of the Labour Party? Or just someone they chat to from time to time?

spontaneousgiventime · 28/05/2018 13:18

Have not RTFT is she ok? This is appalling, poor Magdalen Flowers

I copied the description was from his Twitter profile.

LinkedIn says, "Domestic Policy Adviser at Leader of the Opposition (Labour Party) & Office of the Leader of the Opposition (The Labour Party)"

Bowlofbabelfish · 28/05/2018 15:04

Edinburgh is a safe place - I do hope she’s Ok. And they catch the bugger.

And what a hero for that guy to step in. I hope he’s OK too :(

WhatTheWaterShowedMe · 28/05/2018 16:28

I hope she and the man who came to her aid are both healing well. This is really scary.

Elendon · 28/05/2018 16:28

[Flowers] to Magalen, her helper and the NHS.

Excellent...we need to tell him how it is, they might finally start believing us.

thebewilderness · 28/05/2018 18:58

Lord Factotum? Srsly d00d? If you aren't dead or in hospital it wasn't a real rape assault violence a beating.
That is what the men all said in the fifties when I was little and they justified beating any woman or child who disobeyed them.

thebewilderness · 28/05/2018 19:01

Edinburgh is a safe place

This seems an odd response to hearing that a woman was assaulted.
Edinburgh is clearly not a safe place for Magdalene. She was just assaulted there.

Ereshkigal · 28/05/2018 19:13

I think it's more that that's why it's weird that she was randomly assaulted.
