I've just seen in Twitter that she was attacked by a random man in the street! She hasn't said why yet.

I am just that this is happening in 2018

(I hope it's okay to post this here. I imagine people will want to discuss it)

Kyanite chilling juxtaposition there! HopePinkBoots is a great Twitterer to follow. IIRC he used to identify as a transwoman but as he became more aware of gender critical feminism he ‘came out’ as just a boring old feminine (I think gay) man. Absolutely expanding the bandwidth of what it is to be a man, top bloke.

@grandplans The PayPal link probably got pulled because of the bit of talk guidelines that says: We only allow fundraising for registered charities to be promoted on our Talk boards - and these threads should be posted on the Charities noticeboard. This is in the interest of protecting our users as we aren't able to vouch for or endorse individuals running crowdfunding campaigns or anything along those lines.

Guidelines may say that - but there are crowdfunders on here all the time. I’ve donated to 2 on here in the last week, one of which I started the thread (for Hibo Wardere to be able to travel to Denmark to deliver a talk on FGM - she made her target, thanks everyone!).

So to pick on Magdalen - at a time like this - is a pretty ugly thing.

I am not the person who reported it but I think the difference is the others are crowd funding for a specific purpose and have to comply with the crowd funding rules. That isn't what Magdalen Berns' PayPal account is, is it?

LassWiADelicateAir I don't think there are any MN rules on crowdfunding - are there? Other than it's only registered charities that are meant to be allowed to do it.

MN don't actively moderate all threads, they rely on reports. They've said that many times. So all sorts of stuff goes on that's against the guidelines, including crowdfunders.

The other crowdfunders were (probably) allowed to stand, not because they don't break the rules, but because no one reported them.

@AngryAttackKittens she says herself she’s “no shrinking violet” and i think she’s pretty adept at boxing or martial arts or something that said, her recent surgery and lasting problems from the brain tumour have no doubt knocked her back a bit. Thank fuck some awesome bloke stepped in to fight the lowlife back.

No more updates on her Twitter, I hope she is resting up and being looked after by her gf and other real life people. She can update us internet pixies when she’s ready!

I hope the bloke who stepped in to help is OK too. Thankfully this happened in the UK so at least there won't be medical bills to worry about. Hopefully someone is now feeding the helper tea and cake too!

It worries me that this was not a random attack.

My spidey senses are tingling: as a Scot from Glasgow who lived in Edinburgh for a good while and is now back in God's Own City (aka Glasgow, ha ha), I can safely state that Scotland is a VERY safe country - random street attacks, especially on women, are vanishingly rare.

Additionally, Edinburgh is probably one of the most gay-friendly cities in the UK, second only to London or possibly Manchester, so I couldn't imagine this would be a homophobic attack.

As such, I don't think this was random, and I hope the CCTV evidence proves useful.

Much love to Magdalen and to the man to stepped in to help - there are good, brave people in the world! - and I hope all recover quickly, and that the perpetrator is found and punished appropriately.
