NUS Conference breaks down after the UK Border Force Arrive

The following is made up from tweets from the #NUStrans18 conference which seems to have gone slightly awry after the gender neutral toilet signs were removed. They'd been stuck up the day before, converting the women's bathroom to the gender neutral bathroom, so that they'd have 'men's toilets' and 'non-men's toilets.'
Thing's started innocently enough

"I am fucking fuming
Once again food is a mess. Vegan option was a total after thought many of us can't eat it due to allergies and IBS. So what are we supposed to eat for lunch? Leaves. #NUStrans18"

Some bright spark at the hotel scheduled a simultaneous conference for the UK Border Patrol and that's when things started to heat up

"The gender neutral signs at #NUStrans18 have dissapeared entirely, I'm blaming the border force, in the meantime I have awkwardly trudged into the womens toilet that used to be gender neutral. Cue enby screaming"

"#NUStrans18 is one of the few places we feel relatively safe but now here we are on edge because UK Brdr F*rce are here."

They decided to take matters into their own hands

"Currently in occupation of the bathroom lobby #bathroomcaucus #nustrans18"

"Be careful of slippery floors in the gender neutral bathroom - we have some cis tears 💦 #BathroomCaucus #Toiletgate #NUSTrans18"

cis tears or man piss?

"#NUStrans18 white people can we PLEASE listen to POC about engaging with the border force"

"#nustrans18 so update on what happened in the bathroom caucus: We were guarding the gender neutral sign, but weren’t in the way of the doors or anything
And a cis woman came in (not even to pee), saw the sign and went off 2/??
She started saying ‘what about our toilets’ to which we informed her that the gender neutral toilets are for everyone, and if she was uncomfortable she could use the women’s upstairs
She starts shouting ‘one at a time! Respect my authority! We’re here for longer than you!’"

"whoever occupied the bathrooms, you gonna apologise to your POC delegates? #nustrans18"

"great lil update from Finn on #BathroomCaucus these people are attempting to deny our right to pee and we were simply defending that, we were just minding our own business, she’s the one that got angry and aggressive and in our faces #NUSTrans18"

"#nustrans18 I sincerely apologise if mine or any other delegates actions escalated conflict/racism towards QTPOC. The thing is, I honestly don’t know what else I could have done? I didn’t provoke her, I didn’t get in her face."

"I'd like to apologise formally for the misunderstanding and poor handling of the situation that happened in the past hour. We never set out to aggrivate anyone or intended to cause unnecessary stress. I'm extremely sorry #NUStrans18"

Then identity politic work battles begin.

"I want to sincerely apologise for the statement I delivered post-motions at #NUSTrans18. It was insensitive given the nature of the situation regarding QPOC discrimination at the event. I'm autistic and completely failed in my reading of the tone of the room, but it's no excuse."

"Okay so white people at #nustrans18, us PoC are very, very exhausted from dealing with all the racist microaggressions here. We need reparations so please send us pizza, snacks, cigarettes, chocolate, dinner money etc. My PayPal is "

I'm sorry if people find this reporting offensive because they're young and vulnerable youth but might I remind you that these students represent our future elites. In 20 years time they'll be writing our laws. Also, it's f%cking hilarious. See, this tweet they're pretty succinct

"NB: Some of the motions at #NUStrans18 could be interpreted as attacking women’s rights/protections, or even as anti-feminist “hate speech”. The response is a bit of criticism and piss-taking on twitter NOT attempts to close down and disrupt the event, or pickets by masked thugs."

The NUS Needs to have a word with itself. If these students are vulnerable and this explains their behaviour then should they really be voting on issues which affect the entire student body? Are they being used as pawns in someone else's agenda?

Confused thanks, still a bit Confused

AnitaLovesVictor · 01/05/2018 21:52

And the women's loos, Olennas.

A fascinating insight into the future of women's public toilets.

OlennasWimple · 01/05/2018 21:56

Anita - the Telegraph article has a statement from the hotel that said that they agreed to make the disabled loos gender neutral (which I think means that they stood their ground and removed the hand made signs from the door of the ladies loo)

Waddlelikeapenguin · 01/05/2018 22:04

I thought the OP was a joke the first time nope it was twice i read it Grin

AnitaLovesVictor · 01/05/2018 22:10

Oh, interesting, Olenna.

They obviously went rogue though, because there was a tweet saying "Guarding the gender neutral sign now" and a picture of someone sat outside the women's loo holding a sign. (I know - beyond parody).

MNscum · 01/05/2018 22:14

Bet that hotel won’t be letting them back next year.

OvaHere · 01/05/2018 22:15

I particularly like this tweet. Life must be sooooooo hard. Grin

getting on the train and hearing ‘ladies and gentlemen’ is a jarring reminder of the cisnormative, binaristic society we live in. i guess the post-conference comedown is here. stay safe out there, nonbinary pals

Bewilderness said;
Sadly not the first time I have seen transwomen talk of excluding transmen, and I get the impression that a lot of TRAs don't care much for them.
As I understand it the justification for this particular male dominance display is that once a female identifies as a man they become the oppressor.
Theres a rule for that;
8th rule of misogyny: Men are whatever men say they are and women are whatever men say they are.

AngryAttackKittens · 01/05/2018 22:28

These people could pick a fight with a teapot. Is there anything that doesn't piss them off?

"Guarding" the toilet signs ffs. Glad to see so many people on Twitter not having it. Ultimately with people like this the issue is the underlying personality disorder. The trans identification just gives them a convenient excuse for acting like an arsehole and ordering other people around. The word "no" needs to be deployed early and often.

Sadly not the first time I have seen transwomen talk of excluding transmen, and I get the impression that a lot of TRAs don't care much for them.
As I understand it the justification for this particular male dominance display is that once a female identifies as a man they become the oppressor.

From what I've read, the justification is that they have privilege because they were born female. Transactivists argue that people who were "designated female at birth" ie biological females (including both women and transmen) have privilege over people who were "designated male at birth".

This is an excerpt from a longer piece by an ex-transman:

I subscribed to an incredibly misogynistic set of beliefs for years. “DFAB privilege” was a common phrase in our community – “designated female at birth privilege.” It was accepted fact that being born female gave you a lifelong advantage over a male who transitioned. This included men who used transition only to mean using different pronouns on Tumblr and having an anime girl as their avatar. We believed that, as “dfabs,” we needed to shut up about our petty problems. We could never have it as hard as any “dmab women or non-binary people.” Everyone in the trans community agreed that it was our responsibility to uplift “dmab voices.” None of this seemed outrageous or strange to me; it felt pretty intuitive. Growing up under male domination is a grooming process that leaves many girls and women extremely vulnerable to manipulation.

Isn't that also what men's rights activists argue?

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 01/05/2018 23:01

Tiny baby girls dead across the world

Any TRA or MRA saying that females have automatic privilege just by being born

Are not only a complete brainless fuckwits but they can take their insane fucking opinions and jam in sideways up their unlubricated arse

AngryAttackKittens · 01/05/2018 23:03

Yes. You can see how girls who've already had 15 or so years of conditioning to put men and boys first fall for it, especially if they're actively trying to reject their own femaleness. That dynamic is abusive as hell though, and is one of the reasons why as vexing as young "trans men" can be it makes sense to try to hold space for them for when they're ready to admit that they're women again.

Rufustheconstantreindeer · 01/05/2018 23:04

Oh i am sorry

Quite forgot what thread i was on

Was enjoying the , one assumes, lighthearted tweets

Sorry for the disruption

AngryAttackKittens · 01/05/2018 23:07

It's mad that "DFAB privilege" is a thing, but it really is in trans circles. You'll see young women with teal hair earnestly apologizing for their privilege to male people twice their age and size. It's at acid trip levels of WTF is happening.

AnitaLovesVictor · 01/05/2018 23:07

I think you could put that on any of the threads in FWR, and it still be considered relevant, Rufus.

AngryAttackKittens · 01/05/2018 23:09

The one about baby girls thrown in the garbage in Pakistan would be particularly apt.

loudaloneknows · 01/05/2018 23:09

Screen shotted this from a post last night. Delusion

That screenshot gives me the rage Lippy. Arrogant wankers. As if they're the only people who've ever had to think about gender. Some of us have thought long and hard about it and have come to accept who we are.

I know it's because they feel insecure and are trying to shore up their fragile egos but still.

I think that's just #peaktrans'ed me.

AngryAttackKittens · 01/05/2018 23:13

That screenshot could be read as "wasn't it great when we had a society when men were great philosophers and women couldn't vote?"

PerspicaciaTick · 01/05/2018 23:21

Imagine what would happen if pRick from The Young Ones had a twitter account and discovered gender politics.

Only no imagination is needed.

AnitaLovesVictor · 01/05/2018 23:26

We have a generation of pRicks telling us we're terfs and bigots and should have our heads bashed in. Only they have beards now. Such fun.

Mxyzptlk · 02/05/2018 00:08

As I understand it the justification for this particular male dominance display is that once a female identifies as a man they become the oppressor.

But men are seriously disadvantaged, compared to women, to transmen have moved themselves into a situation of disadvantage. (By transwoman reasoning, that is)

thebewilderness · 02/05/2018 01:48

Mxyzptlk
You may be mixing up your manosphere ideologies. It is the MRAs who choose to believe men are disadvantaged by women's rights while the transgender advocate's appear to believe they are by everyone who refuses to have the sexy times with them which is most particularly the oppressive transgender identified females and Lesbians.
