Indeed Datun. And it was definitely Mumsnet that started that irreversible unravelling process for me. I’d spent a good few years juuuuuust about holding the cognitive dissonance together, but once it starts to go...

Hi Leaping.

I understand. I hate the mockery. I think it’s ineffective especially when in reply to something said years ago.

And most of what AngryAttackKittens says I don’t like.

But I realised it wasn’t for me to tell her to be nice.

She isn’t just failing to mind her manners, it’s a political act.

Also, she doesn’t give a shit whether I like her tone or not.

Comedyusername · 29/03/2018 11:28

Not read all the thread yet, but thought I'd check this Shon out on Twitter and I'm blocked. I'd never heard of 'her' before. Most bizarre!

I love this thread. It reminds me of the thread that first peak transed a few people. Started by a married man, he was asking AIBU, I've been invited to a hen do and will go dressed as a woman, as that is my alter ego. My wife is not happy.

He was expecting 'you go hun, your wife needs to understand you'. And he did get a bit of that. But thanks mainly to Offred it turned into a bunch of intelligent, articulate women understanding how a man dressing as a woman and saying he's a man is fine, but a man dressing as a woman and saying he's a women reinforces toxic gender stereotypes and ultimately diminishes us all - men included. Chappy got left behind by the intelligent, informed debate and his posts got more and more put out as the thread went on.

Which is a long winded way of saying I love you guys while you simultaneously drive me nuts Grin

Reluctant
That sounds like an amazing thread, do you happen to know what it was called, or have a link?

Thank you for the link to the post! I’m setting that aside for reading on a flight.

DarthArts · 29/03/2018 12:54

@Ellenripleysalienbaby

Yes - posted about that on another thread (the Venice one).

It's a well known tactic on twitter to effectively deny a right of reply.

Be thank you for linking that. I just read it end to end, and Offred really does deserve a medal.

It's amazing. 25 pages of discussion with an AGP male actively AGPing on the thread and although a couple of posts towards the end delicately hint that some men have been known to fetishize women's clothing no one ever mentions the AGP. Four years ago we were all so innocent.

Wheresmyfuckingcupcake · 29/03/2018 13:25

Is this Faye individual very young?
How can anyone who has lived through the 80s think there is anything remarkable about a man wearing make up?

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 29/03/2018 13:35

Who let Vince Clarke dance though? Bless him.

Irishfeminist · 29/03/2018 13:43

@Wheresmyfuckingcupcake yes he was apparently born in 1988 so won't remember the decades-long fancy dress party. There is Youtube though, no excuse! Angry

Hypermice · 29/03/2018 14:01

Oh the 80s.... when it was totally OK for a straight man to look like this :)

What did we lose? When did we get so narrow in our gender stereotypes?

Wheresmyfuckingcupcake · 29/03/2018 14:12

There are other downsides. All these fucking beards young men have now. They look a fright.

ReluctantCamper · 29/03/2018 14:19

yes hypermice, I think that's part of what's so bloody annoying about this whole thing. I'm not as antiquated as some of you old gimmers Wink , so didn't really do the 80's, but the fact that people think they're being brave and original by thinking that wearing nail varnish means you've changed fucking sex when actually thinking that just makes you totally wedded to patriarchal gender stereotypes.

what used to be so great about Eddie Izzard before he started having girl days and boy days was the view that 'no, these are men's clothes because I own them and I am a man'. Now that's brave and original.

53rdWay · 29/03/2018 14:23

Eddie is such a let-down.

1990s: bloke in a dress and proud of it

2010s: liking dresses means you have “female DNA”.

ArcheryAnnie · 29/03/2018 14:25

@LeapingLlama and @Winewinewinegin the thing is, until very recently, transwomen were welcomed into women's spaces. I've been in LGBT+ circles my whole life, and until the last few years, if someone came out to me as trans, or I met someone as trans, my baseline feeling was a warm fuzzy one of political and cultural sibling-hood. They were in the same boat as me, all gender nonconforming people together, and it was a good feeling.

The Shons of this world have overturned all that. TIMs like Shon don't want to just live quietly presenting however the hell they like, just like the rest of us. TIMs like Shon want to subjugate women. I don't know why - maybe they hate us, maybe they are insecure, I don't know. At this point I don't even know if their reasons make any difference, as we are just too busy trying to hang onto our rights to sit down and worry why these misogynistic males hate us so much.

And of course the old-school transsexuals, who everybody (both they themselves and women) knew were male, but were accepted into women's spaces with a nod and a wink - well, that's all gone now, that acceptance. When you have a hundred wolves at your door it's impossible to spot the one wolf that doesn't want to rip you apart and let him in.
