Just for anyone who didn’t live through the glory that was the 80s and early 90s, that’s Adam Ant, who was seen as rather a sex symbol. It was fun and it was OK to have ridiculous hair, or wear eyeliner if you were a bloke. A straight bloke. Top of the pops was just glorious.
I just can’t imagine a pop star dressing or looking like that now without there being some kind of agenda behind it. We seem to have gotten into this ridiculously narrow little definition of men and women now where as camper says, wearing nail varnish is some kind of sex changing event.

Even in the nineties (early nineties were my teenage years) you look at various pop and rock acts and the makeup is still there. The cure, tons of makeup... even nirvana wore dresses sometimes (without being dolled up in drag, just wearing a frock, because why not.) female bands were allowed to have short hair and wear biker boots and tea dresses, or Male feminist statements. Of course the ‘frolocking In a bikini’ crowd were still there but it wasn’t as pervasive as it is now. The sexuality was very different, much less male dominated and much more into mutual enjoyment.

It’s all connected - narrower gender roles, huge backlash against women and feminism. A more toxic Male culture that is prevalent everywhere - pop culture, and now public life.

WHY and HOW did this happen?

ReluctantCamper · 29/03/2018 14:32

I do wonder if Izzard's stance is down more to ambition than personal views? I feel that way about Stella Creasey too. They're both smart, how can they possibly not get it? These are ambitious people and I wonder if not accepting the prevailing religion would be too damaging to their careers for them to countenance.

53rdWay · 29/03/2018 14:33

I’m paraphrasing re Eddie, but yes:

“I'm not a transvestite. I have some of the same genetics as women, so I'm transgender. When I see a pair of nice heels, I think, 'Yeah that could work. That could be kind of fun, kind of sexy.' Anyone can feel that.”

(Have never looked at a pair of heels myself and thought ‘fun’ or ‘sexy’, but maybe my genetics are flawed.)

ReluctantCamper · 29/03/2018 14:38

does he know he has some of the same genetics as chimpanzees? Is he trans species? Does he see a nice tree and think 'yeah I could hang out there, that could be kind of fun' ?

Mustang27 · 29/03/2018 14:39

@Wheresmyfuckingcupcake oh man I love a good beard Blush

doctorcuntybollocks · 29/03/2018 14:39

He has a lot of the same genetics as a banana.

ReluctantCamper · 29/03/2018 14:41

Does he know he shares more DNA with a black man than with a woman? will he be appropriating the traditional dress of the snazzier african tribes? Will he start calling all his friends 'blood'? Will he start telling us about how he knows first hand the disadvantages BAME people have to work against?

Gah!

I think its important for those finding themselves blocked from Shon's tweetings.. despite having previously not heard of them.
This is the result of Terfblocker and the like.... once you have been deemed 'terf' by one account you will be blocked from seeing many accounts. Similarly many accounts will be prevented from reading your tweets, so nuanced explanations about women's concerns are contained.
There are serious questions to consider about the consequences of this.
including and especially how blocks are being used by some TRAs to spread propaganda & stoke fears.

MoleskinMittens · 29/03/2018 15:17

It takes Blackadder and Monty Python to discuss this seriously and sensibly.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 29/03/2018 15:18

"All these fucking beards young men have now. They look a fright."

Oh God, Cupcake I'm so with you. If I was a young woman now I'd have no chance of a shag. Snogging all that fur would turn my face into a night beacon. No idea how young women do it.

And as for contemplating further activities, would need a strong prescription for antihistamines and steroid creams. And there are places that's not supposed to go.

hipsterfun · 29/03/2018 16:21

don't these youngsters know this has all been done already in the 80's?

And better. And without taking itself so fucking seriously. Get over yourselves, kids.

WHY and HOW did this happen?

I would suggest that post-millenium

1.The internet gave access to unlimited porn on demand and in private, thus dramatically reinforcing stereotypes of male and female gender roles.

  1. Social media gave access to voices that would otherwise never have been heard

That picture of Adam And made me think of “ridicule is nothing to be scared of” and then I realised that’s exactly what TRAs do seem to be scared of.

As the saying goes “men are scared women will laugh at them, women are scared men will kill them.”

misscockerspaniel · 29/03/2018 17:07

Just looked at their twitter a/c and would be interested to know how they earn a living, as they seem to spend all day tweeting. If you are reading this, Shon Faye, could you tell us?

It's a hard life, being a trustafarian and an identifarian at the same time. You should have more care for this poor thing's intersectional oppression.

Thanks, Circle, I now have Prince Charming playing in my brain, and flashbacks to the video. 😂

BarrackerBarmer · 29/03/2018 17:36

Oh
My
God

and after 36 years I now realise the lyrics are NOT

"pretty cute is nothing to be scared of"

I need to lie down.
