As far as I'm aware, men aren't allowed in women's only shelters...

Ihavesomeballs · 18/03/2018 20:36

timberlumberjack

Well not yet no but if the tra's get their way they will soon be able to. Why do you think we're fighting??

timberlumberjack · 18/03/2018 20:37

You're implying trans women are men. I don't mind debating but saying things contrary to what the law says isn't going to work I'm afraid.

Silk29 · 18/03/2018 20:39

timberlumberjack I have volunteered in a women's refuge. Workers and volunteers were left alone with residents.

During an incredibly distressing and uncertain period in their life, women should not be made to feel uncomfortable by the presence of someone who 'reads' (looks/speaks/acts) as a man but says they're a woman. I saw a recent programme where women who had lived in DV refuges all said they would NOT have wanted transwomen there. It's about the women and children the service is being provided for- nobody else.

If a woman is okay with a trans woman giving them assistance, it wouldn't impede on anyone else.
I lived in a mixed young person's hostel years ago and was allocated a male support worker. He said he'd love me to be his girlfriend because I was 'so nice and quiet'. As a meek teenager who'd just moved out of an abusive situation, I didn't even consider if being 'okay' with the staff was a choice. If anyone can self-ID, trans women will be 'women' whether abuse survivors like it or not, and residents at a DV refuge will not be asked whether it's alright with them if the staff on the rota that day are biological males.

smashyourglasses · 18/03/2018 20:41

Did you know that when women say 'No', they mean 'No'. Why are you interpreting 'No' as 'Let's have a debate'? 🤔
Also - transwomen are men.

LizzieSiddal · 18/03/2018 20:45

Some shelters have self-contained flats that people live in. If a woman is okay with a trans woman giving them assistance, it wouldn't impede on anyone else.

So if the Trans woman isn’t going to “impede on anyone else” how are they going to move around the shelter, assisting those who are “ok” with them being there, but not coming into any contact with those women who will be extremely distressed to see them?

Do they have an invisibility cloak?

ApocalypseNowt · 18/03/2018 20:45

Transwomen are men though. They are men that 'identify' as women. I will not be forced to lie.

CertainHalfDesertedStreets · 18/03/2018 20:46

Come on ladies. If vulnerable women are bothered 'they can just ask for someone else' - it's that simple.

All vulnerable people are articulate assertive confident middle class mentally healthy individuals. They can just say 'Excuse me, I believe that the exemptions in the Equality Act entitle me to same sex provision' and then the person in charge - who is standing nearby filing her nails - will say 'I do apologise madam' and whisk an alternative worker with a vagina out from somewhere presumably her own vagina That's absolutely how it works. Hmm

ApocalypseNowt · 18/03/2018 20:49

21 in my constituency now!

IMBU · 18/03/2018 20:54

Signed and shared with my immediate family. Sadly I think this awful bill is going to go through. What an absolute travesty Sad

Please adjust your dress, your lady dick is showing.

Transwomen (all one word) are MEN.

Not "implying" anything. Trans identified males are men.

NoSquirrels · 18/03/2018 21:17

@timberlumberjack
There's all sorts of ways to go about it without needlessly discriminating.

“Needlessly” is an interesting word. Why is it OK for a trans woman to insist on working in a sex-segregated service/place, just because it’s possible for them to do so under the letter of the law? I’d say that’s “needlessly” imposing their wishes and “rights” on other people - the service users - who overwhelmingly say they DON’T WANT IT.

There are lots of jobs in the caring professions that would be open to trans people.

Trans women don’t need to work at women’s shelters. It may be officially “discriminatory” but if they’re interested in helping women in this sort of scenario then they should realise the best way is to put the women who have been abused first.

Trans women need to lobby fur their own services. Not just take women’s.

Ereshkigal · 18/03/2018 21:18

Okay, I'll rephrase. The aggression wasn't required. It's a hell of a selfless act to volunteer at a shelter, and it's a difficult job to work at one.

Not if you're a predatory male it isn't. You can look at recent examples of Save the Children, Oxfam and UN peacekeepers worldwide, time after time, to see how predators are drawn to vulnerable women and children.

And I'll decide how I phrase my posts, not you.

Ereshkigal · 18/03/2018 21:18

YY.

Ellenripleysalienbaby · 18/03/2018 21:19

You're implying trans women are men.

Trans women are men. How anyone can genuinely think otherwise puzzles me.

Ereshkigal · 18/03/2018 21:21

This person doesn't genuinely think they're women. They wouldn't give them this attention otherwise. It's always quite telling.

whoputthecatout · 18/03/2018 21:21

You have to ask why, when there are so many ways that trans people can contribute to society, do compassionate works, help the vulnerable etc. trans women would choose specifically to work in women's shelters.

Now why would that be?

Ereshkigal · 18/03/2018 21:23

It's a beautiful selfless act of charity, whoput. Which most women in the shelter would rather they didn't do, but hey ho! Totally worth fighting for. Stunning and brave.

NoSquirrels · 18/03/2018 21:54

From thread on Gransnet (which is overwhelmingly positive)

I have passed it on the the Women's group that I belong to as well, and they are putting it on the agenda for the next committee meeting with the intention of alerting the National Executive (who probably already know).

Practical help needed please! I want to sign the petition but I don't get the email to confirm my signature. Anyone know what I can do? It is definitely my email address that I am putting in and I have checked my spam folder.

SimonBridges · 18/03/2018 22:03

There's all sorts of ways to go about it without needlessly discriminating.

Like I said, by asking a transwoman to modify their behaviour because they are a transwoman you are acknowledging that they are different to women. Therefore your statement that ‘transwoman are women’ is clearly false.

Anyone who is male bodied who has the sensitivity or understanding to work in a refuge will understand instantly why that is not a good idea and will think of another way to help if they wish.

NoSquirrels · 18/03/2018 22:12

@Penygirl do you get the screen that tells you to check your email? Or just don’t get off the first screen?
