Lord Patel/Karen Jones thread - anyone want to go to House of Lords to talk to Lord Patel

GColdtimer · 12/03/2018 20:46

Does anyone remember this thread?

Well, I wrote to Lord Patel to ask him why he had invited a violent rapist and attempted murderer to talk to the House of Lords (about the rights of transgender people). He has invited me tot he House of Lords to share my concerns!

I am in shock. The dates he has sent I can't do, I am also sure there are other people who would do a far better job than me. Anyone fancy going in my place??

Like so many others, my first thought was take Datun. I'd be surprised if he'd be willing to meet someone else instead but surely you'd be allowed to take someone with you. Well done!

LineysOfArabia · 13/03/2018 02:02

This is very positive

pisacake · 13/03/2018 04:54

He also invited a male burglar who preyed on 102-year-old women, don't forget that part.

pisacake · 13/03/2018 04:56

Burglar bloke: twitter.com/confirmedturf/status/968727280435462145

BeUpStanding · 13/03/2018 05:49

Hurrah! This is excellent news. Goes to show that writing a letter can have an impact.

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/03/2018 09:08

Remember he was an obstetrician and leading light in the the RCOG and wider medical community.

If presented right, he is more likely than most to 'get it' re women's safe spaces and transing children.

SmurfOrTerf · 13/03/2018 09:57

Monsterous I have been wondering too, what are they teaching in biology lessons in school.
and does this mean my O level biology is no longer valid

TheQuestingVole · 13/03/2018 09:58

Hold your horses everyone - this is not Narendra Patel who was president of the RCOG - he is a top flight scientist. This guy is Kamlesh Patel, Lord Patel of Bradford.

His professional background is prisons, social work and mental health care and policy.

Ineedacupofteadesperately · 13/03/2018 10:17

Just popped on to say thank you to twofalls (excellent letter - agree with everything you wrote) and Datun. Please do take this opportunity. I agree with pretty much everything Datun writes on this topic. If you go you will be representing me and my concerns too.

UpstartCrow · 13/03/2018 10:21

If Lord Patel has a background in prisons, then he must be aware that statistically, the majority of female prisoners are non violent with a history of DV and head trauma.
The last thing they need is to be incarcerated with male rapists and murderers.

BoreOfWhabylon · 13/03/2018 10:42

Thanks Vole. Sorry everyone Blush

Still, Bradford > West Yorkshire Police > links with Mermaids (see the PosieParker threads)

Datun · 13/03/2018 10:47

Yes, I'm a bit concerned about Lord Patel. He is in the very position to understand why women are worried. And he doesn't appear to be.

On the other hand, he has invited twofalls. Which he didn't need to do.

Wanderingwomb · 13/03/2018 11:01

Photographs could be pretty outing, surely? Which is perhaps not what you want given current TRA silencing tactics.

GColdtimer · 13/03/2018 12:36

That is my concern wandering.

gingergenius · 13/03/2018 12:38

If you need a photographer I'll do it!!

UpstartCrow · 13/03/2018 13:03

Threats are being made against the people attending, this is a breach of Data Protection (and possibly threatening behaviour) so feel free to report to ICO;

ArcheryAnnie · 13/03/2018 13:18

This is brilliant, bloody well done, twofalls. And Datun, it's great of you can go!

I'd suggest against inviting press, photos etc at this stage. I think it's more productive to invite the kind of climate where any politician can invite discussion from women (and where women will feel safer about initiating this discussion) without being splashed all over twitter the next day. We want to create the conditions where people can change their minds. That might mean we don't get the "Lords' Terrace" selfie that the murderer/rapist got, but that doesn't matter much, at this stage, I'd suggest.

Datun · 13/03/2018 13:39

Yes, I'm not interested in a photo op. It won't gain us a single thing. Except notoriety and threats.

I'm interested in making Lord Patel understand what is at stake here.

I'd like to know how a man who has killed another man and attempted to murder a woman, on the basis of the fact that he hates women, is considered a reputable, or even plausible voice on the issue of how to treat men who identify as women.

I don't understand how the words vested interest, skin in the game, hopelessly biased opinion and hatred of women, doesn't automatically exclude him as someone who should be listened to in terms of the conflict of rights.

Nosetothesun · 13/03/2018 13:42

The link above in UpstartCrow's post refers to requests which have been made in the last few days asking various politicians to look into DrRadfem's meeting in HoC this week (cancelled Millwall event). Appeals have been made to cancel it and this is MCashman's reply.

Jog22 · 13/03/2018 13:48

I think it might be a struggle peaking Lord Patel. He is Chairperson of this organisation;
www.ciellp.net/
which produced the Inside Gender Identity Report which they took to present to the House of Lords along with Karen Jones. It's very much positive about housing trans women in the female estate.

One of the other Director's is Dr Jon Bashford who's Twitter page shows him following the likes of Action for Trans Health, Gires, Gendered Intelligence, Paris Lees, Mermaids, Tara Hewitt etc.

Datun · 13/03/2018 14:04

Jog22

Yes, I'm not holding out much hope.

I wonder if inviting twofalls is just a box ticking exercise.

On the other hand, anyone who is politically savvy cannot afford to piss off quite so many women as they are.

TheMonstrousRegiment · 13/03/2018 17:58

Yeah *@SmurfOrTerf * it's a huge concern. What exactly are going to be the ramifications, you can't just pick and mix science. Especially science that has already been proven and set in stone.

I just wondered if, as a man and a political one, it might be a point that would hit him harder. He may not care about women or even children. But those in government always care about their country's placement against the rest of the world.

So maybe if he thought that this ideology will be dumbing down the UK, in terms of science in the eyes of the world, he might have more of a think about all this.

misscockerspaniel · 13/03/2018 18:11

I nominate Datun and YesItsADebate

niceberg · 13/03/2018 18:36

Awesome twofall, well done. He might be hard to peak but at least this is an opportunity for debate with someone with clout.

Hrumphing · 13/03/2018 19:33

If his remit is prisons then maybe take some of the data on the number of TIMs in prison with convictions for sexual offences vs the number of women with those kind of offences.
I'd also ask him about why this kind of information isn't being officially collected before considering any change in policy.
