I am about to ID as a man

1000 replies

YesItsADebate · 23/02/2018 08:27

In 1.5 hours, I will be identifying as a gay man who does not conform with male gender stereotypes. I expect my local leisure facility to comply with the Swim England guidelines and agree that I am entitled to access the men-only swimming sessions, the male showers and toilets and to wear swimming trunks. I also expect them to re-educate any other man who objects to any of the above.

In other words, I have a meeting with the local swimming pool at 10 to see whether or not I’ll be resorting to topless swimming and public nudity tonight in an effort to prove my point that the Swim England guidelines are ridiculous Blush

Wish me luck!

I'm a bit late to all this trans business. I have a question, how did all this self IDing start? Who are the main people starting it? I would have thought that there really aren't enough trans people this would concern that would justify changing entire men's/women's spaces.
Is this something being propsed in parliament?
I would have thought a few women /self iding transmen changing their tampons in the Westminster men's urinals would put a stop to all this.

Patodp · 25/02/2018 11:56

Norway was the first country to introduce it and every one else is following.
It would be interesting to understand bit more about Norway, the background, and how it's working out.
Amnesty international seems to have played a big part.
Here we have Stonewall and Mermaids. Huge well funded organisations pushing for it.

Dissenting voices aren't nearly as well funded, collective, or organised, and most individuals against it are all forced to resign or whatever.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 25/02/2018 11:59

Well Norway are not as far forward with it as the TRAs would like us to believe

RealityHasALiberalBias · 25/02/2018 12:22

That video is from Denmark.

Patodp · 25/02/2018 12:23

That is really interesting and highlights the absurdity of self-ID.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 25/02/2018 12:26

So it is. Ah.

It's still funny though

TheGoldenBough · 25/02/2018 12:47

That video is really what people need to see because that man is not what most people think of when they think of protecting the rights and safety of 'vulnerable trans people'.

I would be really interested to know what his personal motivation is because that is not someone who is living as their authentic self as a woman! Being able to wear a swimming costume, enter women's changing rooms and getting summoned to cervical screening does not a woman make.

And what exactly are they doing when he attends his cervical screening? Do they pretend?

ijustwannadance · 25/02/2018 13:14

That video says it all.
Why the fuck are laws being passed to indulge this?!##

hipsterfun · 25/02/2018 13:27

I would be really interested to know what his personal motivation is

Highlighting the absurdity, I imagine.

GreenbackBoogy · 25/02/2018 14:37

Has there been a reply from the leisure centre yet?

niceberg · 25/02/2018 14:43

Do you think he is highlighting the absurdity? Perhaps there is more context than the clip shows. I hope so because watching that gave me the fucking rage.

Why didn't the interviewer push for better justification for ignoring the feelings of the women in the changing room?

Jux · 25/02/2018 14:50

Re that clip, see the post by DichordStasis ^^ when she posted it. Yes, he's doing it highlight the absurdity of self-id.

Jux · 25/02/2018 14:55

Patodp, yes it is a proposal, and Westminster ministers have been in talks with Mermaids etc for months if not longer. The Scottish Parliament have a survey for opinions on it, and if self-id is adopted by them, it's likely all UK will follow.

You, whether you live in Scotland, or are Scottish, or not can be part of the consultation, but you only have days. See this thread which has been being bumped since it started www.mumsnet.com/Talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/3161638-To-call-to-all-You-have-less-than-a-month-Please-act-now-to-protect-womens-rights

niceberg · 25/02/2018 15:05

jux I'm really confused- the YouTube clip I clicked was posted by assigned and I can't see anything after it from dichordstasis.

AssignedPuuurfectAtBirth · 25/02/2018 15:12

Nice
This is what Dichord posted. Sorry, should have quoted it too

"Cool, lots of people of both sexes need to do this in order to prove the point that self-id is utterly preposterous.

In Denmark, where they already have version of self-ID (it's quite easy to legally change your gender there) at least one semi-famous public figure has taken it upon himself to demonstrate the absurdity of it all, all with a straight face. The artist Ibi-Pippi legally changed his gender to "woman" and went into the women's changing room at his local swimming hall. It caused quite a fuss.

Anyone with half a brain could see that this type of outcome is only logical if anyone who says they're whatever gender they say they are can relatively easily have their gender legally changed and recognized. This is one reason of many why self-id is so dangerous."

niceberg · 25/02/2018 15:15

Thank you assigned and jux my blood pressure can come down now Grin I have been following the thread from the start but must have missed a chunk of posts yesterday.

CadyHeron · 25/02/2018 16:11

Been reading the whole thread and now delurking to give OP a manly slap on the back! Well done sir.

Certainly. My employer's trans guidance says that people in transition can choose to be male or female from one day to the next, choose their toilet based on what they feel is right on the day, and have 2 ID cards - for their male and female sides.
Really? Good grief. So what exactly is the OP doing wrong then,if you are allowed to self ID the other way round like this?
Surely she can be George one day then in the blokes changing rooms/toilets, and Georgina the next day in the other way?!
Just doing what's acceptable already by the sound of it! So why are we getting some people complaining?
Oh, yes that'd be right - because women are supposed to shut the fuck up and just accept it, is that it?
Brilliant OP. Showing it all up for what it is. Really hope you manage to get some mass meet ups going too,bet there'll be loads of support.

MedusaBadHairDay · 25/02/2018 16:26

Just watched Life of Brian today and made me think of this thread - Loretta the trans person in the People’s Front of Judea Grin

MunchausensLovelyHorse · 25/02/2018 16:56

I've done the Scots consultation survey today, Jux, thanks for the reminder.

BetsyM00 · 25/02/2018 18:44

@YesItsADebate

Given that the whole point of this is to prompt the men in the changing rooms/pool to complain, it could be a good idea to take your DP along to start the process. If willing, he could exclaim loudly about how inappropriate your bosom is and quite openly find a staff member to complain to.

Geoff1969 · 25/02/2018 20:51

I see the Daily Mail have picked up on this thread.

MrsJoshDun · 25/02/2018 20:54

Have they? Please link to save me searching!
