Gender Critical Reference Thread

BetsyM00 · 13/03/2017 21:11

There was talk on this transgender thread about starting a list of references.

Hope no-one minds me starting one. Please feel free to add to it!

I'm still looking for a good link to dispute the pink/blue brain nonsense. Maybe @M0stlyBowlingHedgehog can add one with references to d values of 0.5.

I'll start with Gender Identity (Protected Characteristic) Bill 2016-17

3 Aug 2017 Times: Full text Janice Turner is still on the case about Maria Miller: A question of honesty
I’ve interviewed many politicians over the years and am used to their media-trained skills. Don’t answer questions, just keep saying what you want to say, doggedly, repeatedly. Smile pityingly, roll your eyes, try to make your interrogator feel foolish for banging on.
Maria Miller, chairwoman of the women and equalities select committee, did all of those when I interviewed her about her report proposing changes to the Gender Recognition Act, redefining our very concepts of male and female. Yet what shocked me was how Ms Miller questioned my right to ask these questions on how her plans would affect 30 million women.
These were her excuses: this report was two years ago; I’ve done lots of other reports since then; I didn’t know I would be talking about this today; this is now in the hands of Justine Greening (who has launched a further consultation) so ask her; this is difficult to answer and Justine should look into it.
Seriously? You propose changes that will affect women’s safety, privacy, sports, scholarships, legal status . . . then just shrug: “Not my problem now, mate.” I hope Justine Greening will have some answers: because women still have lots of questions.

New Year's resolution is to meet more feminists and engage in more feminism. I already follow all the obvious feminists on Facebook & Twitter. Want to be part of a constructive group rather than online arguments. (Possibly with the long-term aim of setting up a political party, if that's not too ambitious, which it probably is, haha!) Looking for others on here who are both feminist and leftwing and green ? Anyone ? I'm in York though....

guardianfree · 01/01/2018 18:51

Just leaving this here as a very useful reference point.

wrappedupinmyselflikeaspool · 01/01/2018 20:50

Nora Horton I work near York and I’d be up for some kind of constructive group real life meet up type thing. I too am tired of arguing on the internet though I really appreciate the women who are so patiently explaining reality to people. I’m a bit limited time wise but maybe other Yorkshire people on here are interested and we could try meeting for a coffee?

NoraHorton · 02/01/2018 06:34

Hi wrappedup. That would be great, a real-life meet-up (I've PMed you my FAcebook name). I also don't have much time (I think that's why women and mothers in particular never organise!) We should be able to manage a quick coffee though :) I know two other women in York who would like to start a York RadFems group, and I'm sure manyothers would join once its started. So that's one thing (anyone interested in York RadFems please PM me - or maybe we could broaden it out to a Northern or Yorkshire thing?). I am also collecting names (nationally) for anyone who is interested in starting a new women's group (either protest group or longer term political party for the politically homeless, obviously we don't want to split the leftwing vote at next general election) , and working on a few proposals and objectives to circulate (by email) and get feedback on. So anyone interested in that please PM me too. (Am thinking the latter will be done by a reply-to-all email group)

This is brilliant, thank you! I would like to email these references to gender critical feminist organisations such as Object! to put on their websites. Does anyone have any objections?

Good books on the subject/similar subjects are A. Saini, Inferior: How Science Got Women Wrong - she looks at the sexism in science from Darwin to the modern day and presents alternative findings and research. She very much defeats the 'ladybrain argument' and stresses the impact of the difference between XX and XY in for example medicine and drugs. She analysis how an abuse of Science has been used to trample women's rights.

Cordelia Fine, Delusions of Gender is brilliant. This work also demolishes sexist science.
Cordelia Fine, Testosterone Rex is eye-opening and won the science award this year. It shows how the importance of testosterone has been wrongly represented and the implications for this - yes you guessed it sexist science once again supporting the patriarchy.

Is this thread still current? Or is there another one that's more up to date? Asking because I find threads like these absolutely invaluable. I've bookmarked it, and if there is an "updated" version, I'd love to bookmark that too.

This is my must watch on sexed brains. Sophie Scott is a British neuroscientist and Wellcome Trust Senior Fellow at University College London. She was given a CBE for services to neuroscience in the 2020 new years honours, for services to neuroscience, I think due to her work in science communication. This talk was due to be given at several "skeptics in the pub" events, but her talk was cancelled.
