I saw this on twitter recently: you tweet something you're damn good at, without apologising or getting into false modesty.

I was feeling a bit down today reading all the threads about how feminism is too this or too that, too academic or too humourless or not good enough at explaining itself - and I thought maybe it'd be good to have a more positive thread.

Rules: if you post a non-serious 'I'm so good at eating my bodyweight in stale Easter Eggs/procrastinating on MN' type thing, this counts as false modesty and you need to post something else too!

I'll start - I'm a really good teacher.

I like meet ups.

And I am glad this thread was good for other people - I loved the concept on twitter, but it's so good to read this where we have more space to talk about it.

Thanks for coming back 0x530x610x750x630x79 (what does that mean?!).

Loving the chainsaw art. I had an art teacher (who went on to be a working artist IIRC) who made huge sculptures by welding - I thought she was pretty kick-ass, too.

I'm going to be very self-indulgent (cos this is my thread Grin). Someone really lovely and kind reminded me yesterday about a conversation we had on MN years ago. I remembered it - I'd been banging on, as I do, about how you can be dyslexic with crappy spelling and still do an English degree. I've had that argument so many times now. But, I went and fished it out because I wanted to remember what I'd say, and it brought back to me how, back then, I had sooo much imposter syndrome. And I still do now but the ground's shifted since, and if you'd told me then I'd be where I am now, I would have been really surprised. So it reminds me how much it is actually important to stop and say 'shit, I've really done well here'. Grin

I would love to know how many thousands of words we've written, as a group, that have motivated other people to do some of the stuff on this thread. I know not all motivation comes from MN (!) but a lot of mine does, and it's a good though.

I am good at the area of academia I am in. I receive complements about the clarity of my writing (although I find the process of writing a paper utter torture!). I am a good interviewer. I am good at reviewing research papers.

I am a good flamenco dancer. I am generally good at exercise.

Am am good at offering support to people in need and I am not afraid to step up when required.

TheAssassinsGuild · 20/04/2015 14:02

I am a good (but new!) driver.

TheAssassinsGuild · 20/04/2015 14:04

Been having a blah week, so it feels good to read this thread and to post. Thanks for the thread Jeanne!!

JeanneDeMontbaston · 20/04/2015 14:08

Smile No trouble.

I wish I were good at exercise. Envy

Lovely thread, OP Flowers

I am very good at interviewing people and building a strong, cohesive team.
I am a very good mum.
I am a good photographer (not much chance to do it right now as I am so busy being a good mum Wink)
I am good at going after what I want in life and making it happen.

Lancelottie · 20/04/2015 15:15

I had to think hard but...
I got an A* in art A-level last year, 30 years after leaving school. In fact I slightly overthunk it and got 100% in the coursework section.

ladylazarus1 · 20/04/2015 15:27

I'm a good Mum
I'm good at being resourceful
I'm good at being quirky
I'm good at being empathtic

ladylazarus1 · 20/04/2015 15:29

*empathetic

MagentaOeuflon · 20/04/2015 15:33

I'm good at my job and have years and years and YEARS of experience. I know what I'm doing and am a safe pair of hands for a project. It feels good to say that! Even within my field it's not really the done thing to say how competent you are.

I'm a good cook. Not a fancy pants masterchef style cook, a bloody good home cook and if you come round to mine for lunch you will get lovely food.

I am shit hot at organising, sorting and just plain old getting stuff done.

I am very creative and will make anything.

Galrick · 20/04/2015 15:35

I'm good at being quirky :)

You've just reminded me of Insane Bully Boss sneering: "You're a maverick, Garlic."

Me: "That's what most people hire me for. You interviewed me Hmm"

crapfatbanana · 20/04/2015 15:35

I think I'm really versatile and a quick learner. I'm a good writer and a damn good baker.

BlueberryWafer · 20/04/2015 15:43

I'm good at cooking.

BlueberryWafer · 20/04/2015 15:44

I'm also a good friend.

Cinnamoncookie · 20/04/2015 15:59

I make cakes, biscuits and other goodies that the recipients have referred to as 'more addictive than crack cocaine'.

I can manage and work with all sorts of difficult people (I work in the creative industry).

I can plan and keep track of hundreds of tiny details.

I manage money and finances extremely well.

I have a wide-ranging and esoteric general knowledge, and am a useful member of pub quiz teams. For pop music and sport, you'll need someone else, but if you want to know what was the first registered trademark and who registered it, I'm at the front of the queue.

BleachedBarnet · 20/04/2015 16:05

I'm very clever, can read quickly and have a good analytical brain.
I'm quick - don't ever need to be told twice.
I'm good at baking.
I'm funny and always making people laugh.
I'm really good at doing make up, and I'm proud of that because it's a fairly recent achievement that I put work into.

This thread is brilliant!

OutsSelf · 20/04/2015 16:10

O o, I am good at exercise, a real all-rounder. I'll have a bash at anything physical and can usually get the hang of it pretty quickly. I can teach most people to do physical stuff too: I'm good at seeing where they are going wrong and finding the right language or image to enable them to correct themselves.

Galrick · 20/04/2015 16:17

I'm good at seeing where they are going wrong and finding the right language or image to enable them

This is great :) Self-diagnosed as dyspraxic, I've been lucky to have a few instructors who really 'got' what I needed to learn ... and some dreadful ones, who taught me nothing!

Hovis2001 · 20/04/2015 16:27

Deep breath.

I am actually really clever. I keep expecting to hit my "ceiling", to get to that point at which I feel intellectually strained, each time I go up to the next stage of education. Now two years into my PhD and it... hasn't happened yet. Not saying I don't find it difficult but my brain isn't really breaking a sweat. It an awesome feeling. I think it must be a bit like being really naturally good at sports and just being able to keep going faster and harder.

In particular I am really good at holding the big picture in mind whilst considering all of the different threads that make it up, and analysing how they fit together. I can hold a scenario in my mind and think it through various permutations and have a sense of how not just the next step but the step after the step after that will be affected, and of how the thread at the other edge of picture will also be impacted.

I have the capacity to be a brilliant and entertaining writer if I can turn off the academese for long enough.

I am very good at juggling multiple projects and commitments whilst mainting a high standard at all of them.

I am fucking fantastic at cooking with chorizo. Grin

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 20/04/2015 17:49

I'm good at weights Smile

BakingCookiesAndShit · 20/04/2015 18:08

Right... I'm going to say it.

I am clever. I really enjoy my cleverness and love finding new topics to feed it with.

I am brave. I had a horrible childhood and a couple of really abusive relationships, but I have made myself get on with things. I'm not suggesting that people who don't are in some way lacking, but I am really proud of the person I am after everything that's happened. I very nearly didn't make it.

I am a nice, kind, friendly person.

I like me.

and now I'm in tears, because I didn't for so very long, and it's lovely to be able to say that I do, so thanks again Jeanne. I like you very much too

FuckYouChrisAndThatHorse · 20/04/2015 18:16

Oh, bakingcookies, that's really lovely! Flowers

Can I say I like me too?
