Women 'Take Up Space' - Post something you're good at without putting yourself down.

I saw this on twitter recently: you tweet something you're damn good at, without apologising or getting into false modesty.

I was feeling a bit down today reading all the threads about how feminism is too this or too that, too academic or too humourless or not good enough at explaining itself - and I thought maybe it'd be good to have a more positive thread.

Rules: if you post a non-serious 'I'm so good at eating my bodyweight in stale Easter Eggs/procrastinating on MN' type thing, this counts as false modesty and you need to post something else too!

I'll start - I'm a really good teacher.

Hurrah.

I am clever and thoughtful, funny and kind. I am great at reading people. I am full of empathy. I am a good mother.

Give me a bastard of a cryptic crossword and I'll solve it for you. My brain soaks up facts, mostly useless, but I am therefore ace at pub quizzes.
I'll bake you a fantastic cake. I'm dogged and a loyal friend. I'm very good at my job.
I give great cuddles.

Word.

UptoapointLordCopper · 21/04/2015 13:12

Envy at being able to do cryptic crosswords.

TheBitterBoy · 21/04/2015 13:26

I am really good at training people because I am able to explain things clearly in a non-patronising way.
I know a lot of stuff, one of my friends used to call me The Oracle and save up questions for when he saw me.
I make fantastic chocolate Brownies and American style pancakes.
I have lovely handwriting
I'm not afraid to poke a bit of software to make it do what I want.

FujimotosElixir · 21/04/2015 13:42

erm, hmmm i have a good sense of humour in the sense i can find humour in difficult situations, perhaps too near to the knuckle for some but my humour isnt cruel ever. I am articulate/diplomatic at the same time ...i can say what i mean without being rude ..ino its a rare quality. i am very empathic ...it has in the past led not so nice people to take advantage. ..but im older now and see things clearer now, im glad to have that side of me.

grimbletart · 21/04/2015 13:49

I can take a massive report in pretty much any subject, speed read and distil its essence into a form anyone can understand in a super fast time, working to a deadline.

I had unsolicited references when I left work to start up on my own that said I was probably the best in the country in my field.

I am good at diffusing difficult situations.

I can read read body language well.

I can 'guess' the time to within 15 minutes even on a dull day.

Another one who can parallel park with ease and is shit hot at map reading.

Ace at mental arithmetic (other maths not so much Sad)

I can eat misogynists for breakfast (sexists I treat as a mere aperitif).

LadyBlaBlah · 21/04/2015 13:53

I devour knowledge and am good at debating
I am really good at diffusing conflicts without people feeling they have been treated unfairly
I am good at making my kids laugh and feel like they can be whoever they want to be
I am now good at not taking shit from my exh
I am a good runner
I am good at speaking up when there is behaviour that is unacceptable in a way that doesn't cause instant conflict

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 21/04/2015 14:00

I'm an exceptionally good writer - one of the best in my field.

I'm funny and loyal.

I'm have been a fearless, tireless advocate for my DS (I need to give myself more creds for that, rather than focusing on the things I haven't fixed.)

I have the loudest, most heartiest laugh in Christendom - someone I knew 25 years ago recognised me from across a crowded function because I was laughing.

Life has given me lemons and boy, I've made lemonade.

alexpolistigers · 21/04/2015 14:21

I am a brilliant writer

I am fab at learning languages

I am great at explaining the meanings of words

I am in fact a Walking Dictionary

And I am kind and generous

In fact, I am just generally marvellous. Smile

kickassangel · 21/04/2015 15:34

I love how varied these are, and that being thoughtful/good friend/clever etc are all getting as much recognition as each other.

MonstrousRatbag · 21/04/2015 15:42

Professional training in my field. Never been taught how to do it, but I do it very well. I now train other trainers, and enjoy it.

Map reading and navigating.

Making people laugh.

Interior decorating.

Lovecat · 21/04/2015 18:06

Ha, Lonnyvonny, that happened to me too - apparently I laugh like a female Sid James... :o

AdoraBelleOfTheBoys · 21/04/2015 18:15

I'm really good at knitting, learning things as I have an excellent memory for facts, and reading. I'm very fast.

Ooh it was nice writing that. I've been having an "I'm such a bad teacher" day so it was nice to write something nice about myself. What a good Fred.

Lovelydiscusfish · 21/04/2015 18:22

I'm a good mother, a good listener, a good organiser, and I can process things really quickly. I can also write and talk quite confidently on a number of different subjects, and I believe sound quite confident in a public speaking situation even when I'm not.

I also have a surprising talent for making tiny miniature things out of fimo - though untrained, I can make things that look really effective. It's a small thing, but it pleases me.

ByeByeButterfly · 21/04/2015 18:29

Giving hugs
Being there for friends
Being honest but polite
Trying to cheer people up
Looking after people when they are drunk/I'll

PinkSquash · 21/04/2015 18:31

I am resilient, I'm still here!

This is a really difficult thing to do but so inspiring to read what everyone has written

Blimunda7Moons · 21/04/2015 21:23

Ohhh great idea! :-)
I am a great teacher, a fantastic story reader and even better cook (well, maybe better at baking and dessert making than main course but still above average). And I believe I am the best partner for my wonderful man. I am unsure about being the best mother for my son. He is my everything and deserves the best. That's what I try to be, every day.

Blimunda7Moons · 21/04/2015 21:27

and I forgot to mention I am good at languages, I'm fluent in 5 and I'm able to understand 3 more plus some dialects. Yippie for me!

LowryFan · 21/04/2015 21:31

I'm cleverer than most of the people I meet at work.

I'm good at arguing with dickheads.

Brutalista · 21/04/2015 21:34

I wish I could do this; to post something that I'm good at. When I'm good at getting rid of this bastard illness that tells me I'm shit at everything maybe I'll come back.

I've loved reading all yours though.

JeanneDeMontbaston · 21/04/2015 21:42

Oh, hey - there are things you are good at.

And one of those is naming the culprit here: it's the bastard illness, not you!

OP posts:
kickassangel · 21/04/2015 21:43

Beutalista, perhaps you can borrow from a previous poster and say that you are great at hanging on in there. Sometimes just breathing is the greatest achievement of all.

helloelo · 22/04/2015 04:24

Brilliant thread

I am very good at identifying a problem then finding the best process to fix it
I am a great buyer, I'll research and find the best option out there at the best price
I plough through regardless of obstacles, I'm very resilient
I am very good at job interviews. I can story tell my work history and convince recruiters I am great for the job. I am usually great for he job anyway.
I can sleep very little and still function properly.
I am amazing at making my son fall asleep in a few minutes. He's 3 months old. People remark on that.
I give amazing bj I've been told.
I know what I want, I'm decisive
I am ALWAYS on time, even with a baby
I overtook my fear of enclosed space and sharks and I now scuba dive
I am very efficient, I can work very little to great effect
I build a great relationship with my husband, one of equality, understanding and compromise in which we both find joy
I am very gentle to my baby and listen and respond to his needs with pleasure, it brings me a lot of happiness

CycleChic · 22/04/2015 08:05

Yes, there is a serious knack in knowing that it's the illness, not reality. Take it from someone who got seriously confused by her own bastard disease but has managed to see the other side of the tunnel! Flowers

LonnyVonnyWilsonFrickett · 22/04/2015 09:18

Brutalista I suspect you are very good at just keeping on keeping on; at putting one foot in front of the other. Sometimes that's enough Flowers

UptoapointLordCopper · 22/04/2015 09:24

Brutalista Flowers
