Hysterectomy help

Momstheword91 · 29/10/2022 17:16

Hi,

just looking for advice as such.

I am booked in for a hysterectomy on the 18th of November. Been waiting nearly 2 years. Had my pre op last week, was given a leaflet and also told my the person I spoke to prior that I’d be in hospital 3-5days as it’s abdominal (either horizontal or vertical).
I had a letter come today confirming the date (unless it’s cancelled beforehand). The letter states it will be in day case unit. On the letter it says no one is allowed to wait and they will be contacted when I’m allowed to go home usually within a few hours. Am I right in thinking this doesn’t apply to me? I’m thinking they messed up because surely they know I won’t be going home the same day or even the next day? Anyone have any advice etc?
I am going to ring up on Monday and ask because it’s not open of a weekend. Just seeing if anyone has anything similar.

thanks :)

Hi. I had a day case hysterectomy. My husband dropped me off at 8am and I shuffled out to reception at 5pm for collection by my husband. 😄🙄it was a laparoscopic one, where they make incisions in the abdomen and then cut the uterus free and pull out via the vagina. My ovaries and cervix were left ( I was 45). So I think it depends on what type of hysterectomy you are having.

Ridingladybugs · 29/10/2022 18:05

Hi - I am due to have an horizontal abdominal hysterectomy and was told very clearly it would be 2-3 nights in hospital ( I am a single parent and was also told to try and get some help
lines up for when I come out).

i think it must be a mistake if you are definitely having an abdominal - I’d give them a call.

DesMoulinsRouge · 29/10/2022 18:09

I think it's a mistake too, similar letter to my mother and she was in for about 5 days.
Her top tip- do not be tempted to overdo things after the op. Mum did and developed a hernia and had to have more surgery.
Good luck with the op, hope it brings you relief.

Thanks for replying. It is definitely vertical or bikini line incision due to amount of fibroids so I am totally confused x

Yeah, they told me minimum 3 nights and now this is saying I’ll be home same day. Like to see them try 😂. I will be calling first thing Monday morning because the unknown is driving me nuts. Thank you. When are you due yours?x

It’s gotta be, surely? I am going to call Monday morning. The waiting to call is driving me nuts but because it’s only day cases it’s closed of a weekend.

I have 5 children, I do have my partner here but not being able to do things is going to be so hard. I’m usually the cook, I’m always the cleaner, laundrette, school run etc so we have a lot to figure out. He’s told me it’s probably best I stay in the bedroom for the first week after because my youngest is a loose canon and will probably jump on me and I won’t be able to sit there and do nothing. I live in a town house too and if I’m in the bedroom that means I’m either up or down stairs constantly to get to the bathroom/kitchen. Dreading it but been waiting so long! Thanks for replying. X

Yes mistake. I went in on a Friday and came out on Monday.

itsgettingweird · 29/10/2022 18:49

Yes I agree mistake.

I had robotic laparoscopic hysterectomy in June and went in at 6.30am and left at 8pm.

I had uterus, cervix and fallopians tubes removed.

I was lucky because I was first on the list and would probably been in a night if later and was told I'd be I for a night before I turned up for the op!

I’m having total, all bar ovaries being removed. From what my paperwork says anyway. At the min it’s like I’m going in for a tooth removal in and out 😒 x

It's a standard letter. I had exactly the same confusing letter before my abdominal hysterectomy in May. I was in the day case ward but was there for a few days. Also dropped off at the door and passed back out through the same door to DH a few days later.

ancientgran · 29/10/2022 18:57

I had hysterectomy with ovaries tubes and cervix all removed. I think I was in hospital for 4 days. I found it much easier than I had been led to believe, it was up and in the shower the next morning. Yes you have to take it easy but it improved my life so much.

My youngest missed me and I missed him, DH arranged with the Sister for me to go to the hosptal canteen for lunch on the Sunday. DS pushed me there in a wheelchair and it was so nice to sit and have a meal with them.

One tip for when you are first up and doing stuff in the kitchen is having an office chair on casters, have it on full height, it makes it to much easier to whizz round the kitchen.

Good luck, I hope it all goes well.

poorbuthappy · 29/10/2022 19:07

I was ready to come home to be honest! You may surprise yourself 🤣 I've gone to back to work this week albeit from home full time but I'm 5 weeks post op.

Momstheword91 Im having a bit of a nightmare as because my fibroid has grown so quickly and my bloods are slightly elevated they are having to review my case at a multi disciplinary meeting, to rule out cancer concern ( as then it’s a different surgeon).

If it all is OK then Im hopefully down for December 2nd ( but if a nightmare timing with 2 primary DC and a birthday and Christmas!).

Hope yours goes really well! Im now at the point just want mine done!

Yeah this one days drop off and leave. Does that mean you didn’t have visitors the time you were in there? Kind of gutted about that. I’ve read up online and it’s saying if in longer than 24 hours then 1 visitor per day between 11-7pm but not sure if I believe that.

Ah that’s lovely that you could do that! Tbh, it makes me emotional so I’d rather not have the kids visit to be honest. I don’t plan on being in the kitchen for as long as I can get away with it. It’s the only time it’s gonna happen that way lol

thank you x

@iRidingladybugs. I had the same. My ovarian cyst looked suspicious and my CA125 tripled in 3 months so I went through the MDT and onto the urgent cancer pathway. I had 4 days notice. 🤣

Oh blimey, I hope you get the news that you want and it’s not cancer! Fibroids are hormone related aren’t they, so hopefully just too much hormone 🤷🏻‍♀️.

I have 5 children, my daughter is 6 the day before I go and my son is 3 on 14th December so it’s probably buggered anything fun for his birthday and Christmas. Hopefully I bounce back. Scared to death though! Only ever been in hospital to have my children so scary being put to sleep.

good luck to you too ❤️

Oh wow, that’s good news. Glad you’re feeling okay to go to work. I’m due to start a new job any day now. The timing is a bit pants. I was referred feb 21, I had my appointment with consultant on 10th October, pre-op 20th October and then date for surgery on Wednesday for 18th November as long as it doesn’t get cancelled. She said because I’m coming up to 2 years they have to get me in ASAP.

How has your recovery been?

@Momstheword91
No visitors all the time I was in. I think because it's a day ward and they need to stay on top of infection control.

Oh pants! I need to make sure I don’t forget anything then. Wouldn’t want him to have to come all the way there just to drop something to me 😳

@Momstheword91 it's been fine tbh. I took it very easy the first week. DH had the week off and did everything for me which helped massively. I did sleep a bit but not as much as everyone said I would! I'm still sore dont get me wrong but apart from that I'm fine! Went straight onto HRT as well.

AdditionalCharacter · 29/10/2022 21:21

I had a laparoscopic hysterectomy where they removed everything apart from my ovaries, was in overnight, but I think that was mainly because I didn't have it until 2pm.

Make sure you follow all the advise on recovery. I've had 3 c sections and thought it'd be similar recovery, I was very wrong.

My partner is self employed so we need him off as little as possible but he’s prepared for 8-12 weeks.

Im assuming as I’m keeping my ovaries I won’t need HRT will I?

Glad you’re feeling good 😊

I’m assuming worse? My births have all been vaginal so I have no idea what to expect.
