Hysterectomy help

Momstheword91 · 29/10/2022 17:16

Hi,

just looking for advice as such.

I am booked in for a hysterectomy on the 18th of November. Been waiting nearly 2 years. Had my pre op last week, was given a leaflet and also told my the person I spoke to prior that I’d be in hospital 3-5days as it’s abdominal (either horizontal or vertical).
I had a letter come today confirming the date (unless it’s cancelled beforehand). The letter states it will be in day case unit. On the letter it says no one is allowed to wait and they will be contacted when I’m allowed to go home usually within a few hours. Am I right in thinking this doesn’t apply to me? I’m thinking they messed up because surely they know I won’t be going home the same day or even the next day? Anyone have any advice etc?
I am going to ring up on Monday and ask because it’s not open of a weekend. Just seeing if anyone has anything similar.

thanks :)

@Ridingladybugs that sucks, to be all psyched up then have to do it all again next week. Hope they do it this time!

@Momstheword91 gosh are you still waiting? Hope it goes smoothly. Your new life begins after today!

Yeah, they’ve said about 1.30pm I’ll be going down. Hopefully anyway.

@Lula74 @Ridingladybugs

had my op about 2pm on Friday. Still in hospital. The pain is too much. They tried to send me home about 2pm yesterday but I couldn’t move through pain so the nurse told the doctors no. Just seen the doctors again now to up my medication and have told them I’m not going home today either. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.

@Momstheword91 sorry to hear you’re struggling. I’ve read on here ladies who say it gets better after 48/72h. Hope that’s true for you. Hang in there. Xx

Ah I hope so because I can’t cope right now to be honest x

It should ease off soon, could you manage your pain when you had IV painkillers?. Your body has been through a trauma but you’re on the right side of it now. I hope in the next few days you start to feel a little more comfortable x

I had the morphine pump and it was okay then, but they took that at about 9am yesterday morning. Been giving me oramorph but it’s not doing anything. I’ve been having peppermint water for wind but that’s not working. Asked for laxatives but I’m still waiting for them. Wish I never had it done right now because I just can’t cope 😞

poorbuthappy · 20/11/2022 17:50

What painkillers are you on?

Pegsmum · 20/11/2022 18:48

Oh you poor thing, to be honest I found the wind the most painful, it hurts like hell. Could you ask for hot water to add to your peppermint? I found it a bit more soothing to have it warm, but it really does hurt. Have you had any IV paracetamol?

Ridingladybugs · 20/11/2022 18:49

Oh I’m so sorry to hear you are in such pain @Momstheword91 . Hopefully the trapped wind pain should begin to ease very soon at least.

poorbuthappy · 20/11/2022 18:50

Sorry. I mean can you have codeine instead of oramorph? May help you get more mobile

Momstheword91 · 20/11/2022 19:35

@poorbuthappy i was on the morphine pump at first but they took that about 9am yesterday and switched me to oramorph and paracetamol. The doctor prescribed ibuprofen as well. It’s eased a bit now thankfully.

@Pegsmum i had about 3 glasses of the peppermint water didn’t do a thing. I asked whether I could use the capsules I bought with me and they said I needed to get it cleared with the doctor but no one has answered whether I can or not. They wouldn’t give me IV paracetamol they were trying to send me home yesterday morning. They tried about 5.30 today but I’ve had to say no again as I’d have to get a taxi now.

@Ridingladybugs the trapped wind is awful! I think it’s easing. I couldn’t walk until this afternoon because I was in so much pain but I think that has eased it some what.

I am dreading going home but I also can’t wait. I’ve been waiting for my dressing to be changed all day and still nothing.

I tried to go from fentanyl via pump to paracetamol and not use codeine because of the side effect of constipation. That was an error on my part. It's the middle ground and will help you get back to normal. Take the laxatives though. I was in Friday to Monday. Very windy and didn't go to the loo until Tuesday morning at home.

Ridingladybugs · 20/11/2022 20:17

The trapped wind pain is what I remember from my 2 c sections! Weirdly can’t recall the abdo pain at all but suspect that’s because I was in a baby blur.

Pegsmum · 20/11/2022 20:48

No IV paracetamol is mean!!
The wind takes days and days to go, as I remember I was having loads of hot peppermint every day. Personally I wouldn’t wait to get clearance to take the capsules, it sounds like they’ve forgotten you have asked.
i know it doesn’t seem possible right now but in a weeks time you will have progressed so much, you will be in control of your own pain relief once you’re home and don’t panic yet about going to the loo, it’s really early days for you. X

The trapped wind pain is surreal. It was like contractions all over again minus the baby! Crazy. I was in a right frenzy this morning.

I didn’t want to take anything they weren’t aware of but holding off isn’t getting me very far. I do feel like I kind of need the toilet, but not enough to actually go. And there’s no way I’m even trying lol. I’m dreading going home but I’d be better off. Hopefully in a few days I’m okay x

I would think that in a few days you’ll be much more comfortable, I hope so anyway. You’ve done really well so far, even though you might not feel like you have. Keep going x

You will feel so much better once you get home. Worst bit was getting up or down and getting in and out of bed ( but that would have been the same had I stayed in longer )I just had to avoid the dogs when I got home who were trying to climb all over me. A warm hot water bottle helped on the wind. I had the staples out after 7 days and apart from one, that wasn't as bad as I was expecting either.

Hope you escape soon

I’m home now, I stayed downstairs for an hour or so and then came up. I’m already going insane. We live in a 3 storey house too and going up and downstairs for the toilet is proving difficult. It’s really hurting to keep doing it. I’m having to avoid the kids because they don’t understand to not jump on me. Fed up already and only been home a couple of hours lol. This is going to be hard! My stitches are dissolvable from what I’ve been told. The nurse changed my dressing before I left and I asked her to take a picture on my phone. From what I can see, I can’t see any stitches at all. Strange lol. X

This is my worry too @Momstheword91 - I also have a 3 story house with stairs the the loo and a bit worried am going to go round the bend in the bedroom.

Hope you find something to entertain yourself and manage some sleep tonight!

Ah im in a right pickle at the moment. I really need the toilet! If I go upstairs on my own, my partners going to kill me but he’s downstairs with the kids. If I go downstairs, I won’t get back up again cuz they will play up 🙈

I think I’ve lost the plot already 3 hours in haha

when is your surgery?

and thank you 😊

I was last also. I was expecting it to be about 6pm but I went down about 1.45. I was really nervous, but the whole thing was really calm. The anaesthetist and other doctors etc were really nice. He held my hands when they put the spinal in and putting me to sleep really wasn’t scary like I thought. The worst past has been trying to tolerate the pain. And now I’m stuck in bed but we move haha. You will be fine, honestly. I literally was terrified!
