Hysterectomy help

Momstheword91 · 29/10/2022 17:16

Hi,

just looking for advice as such.

I am booked in for a hysterectomy on the 18th of November. Been waiting nearly 2 years. Had my pre op last week, was given a leaflet and also told my the person I spoke to prior that I’d be in hospital 3-5days as it’s abdominal (either horizontal or vertical).
I had a letter come today confirming the date (unless it’s cancelled beforehand). The letter states it will be in day case unit. On the letter it says no one is allowed to wait and they will be contacted when I’m allowed to go home usually within a few hours. Am I right in thinking this doesn’t apply to me? I’m thinking they messed up because surely they know I won’t be going home the same day or even the next day? Anyone have any advice etc?
I am going to ring up on Monday and ask because it’s not open of a weekend. Just seeing if anyone has anything similar.

thanks :)

Oh no to the dressing on the incision! That’s a nightmare.

should get the catheter out soon and then have to try and walk to chair. Might ask for pain relief top up before. Although was told it was going to happen and now everyone has disappeared!

Have been allowed to eat a yoghurt but am really hungry! Consultant said only soup today. He’s very strict and also said only walk to chair and try and sit and attempt toilet. Nothing else today at all!

Your consultant is a diamond then! I didn’t see mine at all apart from 8.15am on Friday morning and then she done the surgery and was told she will write to me. I had my op at 2ish, went to the ward from recovery at 5.30pm (Friday) …. 9am (Saturday) they came round and said 12pm chair, 5pm walk. Came round about half hour later took the pump and said I had to get up and go get washed. Walked me to the bathroom, sat me on the chair with a bedpan of water to wash with and left me. And then from then on kept telling me I had to get up but I physically couldn’t. Everytime someone came they were telling me to get out of bed and sit in the chair instead. Then I think it was about 1.30pm (saturday) so not even 24 hours. I heard someone talking about me on the phone and a nurse came and said the doctor has discharged you but I’ve told her you’re not ready. I was gobsmacked!

it is completely crazy how it’s so different for everyone.

I have just filled up the washing up bowl, and had a tidy of the kitchen as my OH is out. He’s back now though. He will tell me off. X

Oh no - it’s so different I actually asked if I could get washed and he said no! Maybe tonight if you’ve managed the chair ok!

im lucky though in that although I’m on NHS they have done it on the private bit of the hospital ( am assuming because of beds?).

I think my consultant is a bit unusual though anyway - he’s really committed to women’s health etc and giving options. He’s pioneering a new procedure for fibroids to help some women avoid surgery.

Well that’s a bonus! At least they aren’t rushing to get you out of there. Just take your time. Everyone told me enjoy the rest but being in hospital there is no rest involved haha. The first night they were in every hour doing my obs! They allowed me to eat the same night a few hours after but the GA made my mouth unbelievably dry to the extent I couldn’t even chew the sandwich they gave me. I had to try and drink a bit of water to be able to swallow it so I just gave up in the end.

Gosh it is so different - I wasn’t allowed to eat last night as they said my stomach will be too much in shock and would increase trapped wind. I’m hoping to be allowed toast tomorrow as I love hospital toast!

Im up and have washed my face and in a chair. But my stomach is definitely hurting now! It’s weirdly less painful when I’m standing. Hoping pain relief kicks in. Am just on codeine and paracetamol now so we shall see…

Yeah it’s crazy. There’s so much cross over of information.

you love hospital toast?! How 😂 it’s blooming freezing haha.

glad to hear you’re up! In the right direction. Being up and walking will help with the wind. They don’t lie when they say that.

I had some toast the evening of surgery day although mouth was so dry it was a struggle. Next day all as normal. All so very different.

Yes, the dry mouth is unreal! Never experienced anything like it. And yeah, it’s so crazy how it’s so different. No wonder people get so confused.

Oh I haven’t had a dry mouth at all!

Have had to have some stronger painkillers again so feeling much better. And am allowed some
potato for dinner so life is looking up 😁

It was good.

Am struggling tonight with the pain- am
only on co codomol and occasional ibuprofen. They won’t give me anything stronger for a couple of hours. Just want to be able to sleep. Also a bit worried as this is all I will have pain relief wise at home.

Why won’t they give you anything? They should be giving you stuff that works! Will the doctor be round this morning?

I got sent home with paracetamol and codeine. Is it wind pain or is it pain pain?

How are you doing now?

Ridingladybugs · 25/11/2022 07:25

I think it’s pain pain and some wind pain?

They gave me a morphine tablet in the end. Apparently they want to give me the regular meds and then have to wait a couple of hours to give me anything more? Consultant rang last night ( but I didn’t feel too bad then) and coming this morning.

I’ve got the opposite to you - nurses think I should be going home consultant says no won’t make a decision today

I didn’t know there were so many different forms of morphine! Has it eased any?

mat least your consultant is on your side. I hadn’t seen mine it was just ward doctors I seen who said I could go. My consultant told me I had to stay in for 5 days when I seen her the very first time. Luckily the nurses were against the doctor. I could have stayed longer if I fought against them but I didn’t. I took dressing off last night and now it’s really sore! Don’t know whether the leave it or cover it again. Such a stress.

have you had breakfast?

OP posts:
Ridingladybugs · 25/11/2022 10:03

The morphine definitely helped. Saw consultant this morning and he said often 36 hours - 2 days is the worst period. Will demand morphine again if need it I think!

Have had breakfast and showered. I think they have got the staffing wrong as nurses defo want me out!

That’s interesting re dressing as my consultant told me to take it off this morning and the nurses said no way wait 5 days. Everything very confusing!

The nurse didn’t tell me how long to keep it on but I rang a few days ago and they said only 48 hours yet they changed it on day 3 so I have no idea what’s right or wrong!

Oh my goodness this is so confusing!

I think my consultant is ringing me again tonight so am going to ask him!

I did take the big cover dressing off this morning but still have the waterproof one ( so can’t see the scar as it were). Mine defo isn’t going to be changed I’ve been told by nurses to keep on until day 5.

Mine just had one big dressing over, a huge plaster as such lol. Yeah they don’t know their ar*e from their elbow some of them! Let me know what he says because I’m intrigued. I’m still waiting for the letter off my consultant 🤷🏻‍♀️

How are you doing?

I’m currently home alone for the first time. Grandparents have taken the two youngest out because OH needed to go to the vets. I miss housework 😂

I’m also thinking it might get quite boring!

Can I ask are you feeling a bit better? I need some hope as my back is hurting tonight and I’m just feeling like it seems a very long slog ahead and want some hope I might start to feel more human at some point!

Yes it’s very boring!!

I am, then I’m not. I feel sick ALL the time 🤢 and my incision is REALLY sore. I felt okay, I was downstairs and then I just went funny. Sitting up too long makes it really sore so I went upstairs. Thinking of covering it up again because it keeps rubbing. I’m not in pain as in inside, just outside. I did put a load of washing on, quite uncomfortable and I got into trouble 😏 but I don’t feel anywhere near as bad as I did. I have eaten quite a bit of bread over the last 2 days. Subway Wednesday night and 2 sandwiches yesterday and it has constipated me a bit even though I’m taking laxatives. Overall pain wise I’m okay minus the wound area, I just feel sick permanently mainly when I’m up and walking. It will definitely get better. My back is killing me, I don’t know why I’m assuming a mixture of spinal and the fact being slumped in bed.

oh I had a sandwich today - will give the toast a swerve tomorrow!

Yeah I don’t think being in bed is doing my back favours.

don’t swerve the toast on my unfortunate events you might be okay lol.
