Would anyone like to be part of a reading group?
I need something to encourage me to read more regularly - i absolutely love to read but seem to have put it on the back burner recently....
want to get back to enjoying it again
I anyone is interested, we could agree on a book (easier said than done, I suspect!)
read it then discuss....
hmmmmmmm

I'm at the end of chapter 5 - it's OK. Not gripped by it, but it is readable. Does make me feel very "Get on with it, woman - where is the story????" though.

Oakmaiden · 10/01/2004 18:20

Are we discussing this today, or tomorrow? WEll, I thought I would pop this here now (even if it is early?) because I have it now. I kept wondering who this Huey Long was that Sidda had named her dog after - obviously a real person, and someone the character supposedly admires, which should give us clues to the personality of the character. Anyway, there is some informatin about Huey Long here .

He apparently was a Louisiana senator with quite democratic/popularist ideals. I would actually go so far as to say communist traits, but since the link is a US Gov website, a guess they wouldn't want to say that!

Oh dear I have just re-read this thread, its a shame it didn't work out.
Anyway for anyone who is interested in taking part in a similar online book club, please contact me through contact another talker. The first book is The Red Tent by Anita Diarmund.

Yes all feel free to e-mail me. Lets get this book club started. If you can't get through let me know.

Agy · 09/02/2004 15:38

Oakmaiden, that link was really interesting! I've almost finished this book and I've enjoyed it a lot. Helped get me through a bad virus!

lilibet · 09/02/2004 17:32

I would be interested in joining, I have a 'real' reading group in my house every month, but one book a month just isn't enough.
Count me in for the next one!

mummysurfer · 09/02/2004 19:28

Did you receive my email - things seem to be going missing in our email cyber space.

Bekki · 09/02/2004 19:59

I've emailed you

Hi all,
We notice the reading club sort of got of the ground and then fizzled out a bit. If there's a keeness to start it up again we thought we might talk to a publisher or two about getting a Mumsnet Reading Club sponsored, so they provide us with some free copies of the book we want to read and maybe some authors notes or something like that and then maybe we could arrange some events e.g. The first Monday of the month could be book club night where whatever's being read is discussed and we could vote for the our book of the year and get the author on for an online chat... and stuff like that What do you think... anyone interested or should we get back in our box ?
Best,
Justine, Carrie, Rachel

spacemonkey · 23/02/2004 11:26

That sounds brilliant, I'd definitely be interested!

dinosaur · 23/02/2004 11:27

I'm definitely interested.

SenoraPostrophe · 23/02/2004 11:42

Yes - I would have been involved last time but the deadline was too short for me to get the book in time (post to Spain over Christmas takes up to a month). So with lots of notice I could join in - free books or no free books!

bossykate · 23/02/2004 12:59

yes, fantastic idea, thanks justine.

tamum · 23/02/2004 13:11

Absolutely brilliant idea, I'd have thought. Good publicity in both directions. Well done!
