so pops it's left with u

Hulababy · 14/12/2003 20:42

I agree with Popsycal selecting the choice/s too as it was her idea.

SenoraPostrophe · 14/12/2003 20:43

Oh, now I could really do with discovering a good mystery writer. Have been experimenting with PD James, but her characters are often awkward and it irks me as I read.

popsycal · 14/12/2003 20:43

anyone read a prayer for owen meany then!?!?

SenoraPostrophe · 14/12/2003 20:43

popsycal · 14/12/2003 20:43

if not, then that is number one....

Ive seen the film that was taken from this book, is it very similar.

Hulababy · 14/12/2003 20:44

A prayer for owen meany gets good reviews on Amazon

SenoraPostrophe · 14/12/2003 20:45

No, I haven't. But what about 2 and 3? and what is it about?

Chinchilla · 14/12/2003 20:46

I'll join if that's ok. NOT 'Captain C's Mandolin' though...tried that and it was like wading through concrete!

I am forcing my way through 'Middlemarch' at the moment. I can't help thinking that it would be infinitly better if Jane Austen had written it. I have just read 'Porterhouse Blue' by Tom Sharpe. I have loads of favourites, and of the classics, the following would be high on the list; 'Pride and Prejudice', 'Vanity Fair' and 'Our Mutual Friend'.

Of the non-classics, I love Jean M Auel, Diana Gabaldon, Fiona Walker, Robbert Goddard, James Herbert, Phillippa Gregory, Minette Walters...etc.

Chinchilla · 14/12/2003 20:47

Oops...'Infinitely'

Hulababy · 14/12/2003 20:48

Chinchilla - I love Jane Austin (way before the BBC drama came out too). and find it all very romantic. I like a lot of the classics too.

popsycal · 14/12/2003 20:48

Hulababy · 14/12/2003 20:49

This is the Amazon page on Popsycal's first book. Hope she doesn't mind me jumping in here though.

3GirlsMum · 14/12/2003 20:51

I really need to expand my reading library. I read all the classics when I was much younger as I am a prolific reader, given half the chance. Nowadays I read books by Jill Mansell, Marian Keyes, and others similar! I was even known to read my mums Jean Plaidy if I got bored (many years ago now..lol)!

Chinchilla · 14/12/2003 20:53

Me too 3GM. I used to love Jean Plaidy as a young teen

Hulababy · 14/12/2003 20:53

Currently reading Life of Pi for my January's book group meet. About half way through.

popsycal · 14/12/2003 20:54

owen meany sounds very bizarre on the amazon page
basically john irving is think is the modern charles dickens - very observant and a commentator on life around him
his characters are so vivid and the story line of this book keeps you really hooked....
you know the fate of the main character from (nearly) the start but the intrigue is to find out HOW ON EARTH THAT CAN HAPPEN!!!!
i enjoyed it even more on the 2nd and third readings!!!
John irving is class

fairydust · 14/12/2003 20:57

popsycal · 14/12/2003 20:57

Has anyone read Birdsong? Just read a review on that and it looks good..one to add to my list for future reads.

popsycal · 14/12/2003 20:58

fairydust - it is sooo not serious!!!!!
it is great....
if you want to try my 2nd favourite irving book instead try hotel new hampshire....a little more seedy - incest, prostitutes, lesbian bears, etc etc
great!!!

The synopsis for The Wrong Boy looks quite good.

Hulababy · 14/12/2003 21:01

The wrong boy has some good customer reviews on the UK site of Amazon.
