want to get back to enjoying it again
I anyone is interested, we could agree on a book (easier said than done, I suspect!)

I have only read the first chapter so far - but I HAVE nearly finished Owen Meany - which I reckon should also be on our list to read and discuss! I will catch up soon!

Are we going to start a seperate thread for the actual discussion of each book? It would keep things more "findable" - if there is such a word.

fisil · 29/12/2003 19:12

Is that Sunday 11th January, Fairydust? It's my ds's first birthday that day! More than happy to change the date to then - managed to take the book away with me and all the way back, but didn't get time to open it!

Crunchie · 29/12/2003 19:31

I can't believe that people ar efinding this book hard going, I must read so fast or domething as my 4 chapters only took me about 1/2 hr!! I love this book, although I agree that the first bit is far more about 'setting the scene' rather than the actual relationships and drama of the ya-ya's.

For me the first few chapters really show the termoil that exists in Sidda's heart regarding the relationship she has with her mother. It is no suprise she is a theatre director, since her life as a child has been lived as one huge drama (perhaps this is rushing ahead, but I honestly stopped after chapter 4) This is one area she feels in control of, and can 'direct' the action rather than watching it being played out. However everytime she falls out of control (ie the review in the paper), even at the age of 40, she reverts back to childhood and is hiding away in that cabin as she feels worthless in comparison to her mother. She feels unable to love others, since she has had times when she has felt unloveable. Hence postponing the wedding.

Does anyone else see this, or am I alone??

I also love the scene of the ya-ya's going down to the creek and getting pissed on Bloody Mary's in the car! These are women who are old enough to know better, but equally old enough to not give a damn!! Fab stuff, better than Golden Girls any day!!

Please keep going in this book, I read so much, usually about 20mins in bed before dropping off, but sometimes I can go for hours(!!) 6 chapters by Jan 11th would be so easy.

BTW I hated Owen Meany and couldn't get into that one, so perhaps this will do me good and force me to try again. DH thinks it is great, I couldn't even read it when I had nothing left on holiday, so I started my first book again!!

popsycal · 29/12/2003 19:45

crunchie - i need to sit down in silence with my ds and dh out of the way - a glass of wine and box of chocs - that should get me into the book!!!!!
and how could you hate owen meany - argh the horror!!!

I'm finding it difficult because I've not long finished a book that I love. The two books are both about women but are worlds apart.
I find Sidda as melodramatic as Vivi. I can't get a picture of ab fab out of my head when I read it. Vivi is Edina.
I will read a few more chapters to see if I can begin to find a connection with these characters.
O this is Bekki btw. I had a problem with my registration so had to change.

popsycal · 29/12/2003 20:34

my first impression of the ...erm...first chapter is that.....
At the moment, I can't relate to the main character. I know that it is very early in the book - my favourite thing in a book, however, is the strength of the main characters rather than the plot itself....
will try to read some more tonight....
so when do we resume our chat then?

Cherubs · 29/12/2003 20:39

Yes so far Sidda has just annoyed me slightly.
So we will have a seperate thread for discussion on the 11th. Does it have to be an exact time? Or say just the evening?

Hulababy · 29/12/2003 21:22

Well I have read about 5 chapters and have found it slow going. I can't identify weith the main character to be honest. I do think it is improving with each chapter though so I will persevere. See how far I have gotten through by the next date I guess.

popsycal · 31/12/2003 18:08

i have got myself side tracked with another book..oh dear
daren;t tell you what it is

Hulababy · 31/12/2003 23:07

Is it any good? I got Antony Worral Thompson's autobiography for Christmas. Not started it yet though - been persevering with Ya Ya book - up to chapter 8. It s improving I think.

marthamoo · 31/12/2003 23:16

I'm not in it this month but I have read YaYa and it does get better - I found it hard to get into at first but was glad I persevered. Keep going

Hulababy · 31/12/2003 23:21

Thanks marthamoo. Will do. Hope you are right!

popsycal · 04/01/2004 16:28

crystaltips I read Crow Lake and it is a great book. I found it hard to put it down. Thought it was written beautifully. Have just passed it on to Beetroot (see the Book Swap thread).

I am up to Chapter 26 now and it did improve. I am quite enjoying now although it still isn't soemthing I would seek out or read again.

Mummysurfer · 10/01/2004 17:42

Expected you all to be chatting about this today. My Amazon used book that I ordered finally arrived only to find it was the video. Maybe i should post this on "Fried brain" thread. Anyway we could't even get into the video. Think I'll wait and see what you choose next.
