WW 2014 support/b*tch thread

beachavendrea · 07/01/2014 05:47

Is there one of these already? I started WW online the day after Boxing Day which was the best or the worst idea I've ever had. I can't decide.
I have a lot of weight to loose and am finding it hard to get motivated, i have been sticking to my points, so thought I would start a support thread!

Trainers - I've just got over another lot of it Sad. Wish the docs would take mine out!

I can't get enthusiastic about slimming world. My sister did ok on it but for me there was too much "eat as much as you like" to it. I know that a couple of week in to WW I have usually cut out a lot of snacking, which I think is much better.

JanieLovesLuckySocks · 24/02/2014 18:43

Hey crafty! I joined online with the groupon offer today as well! The 9.15am meeting wasn't happening fir me with a newborn baby, and it was full of very annoying members who just moaned the whole time about not losing weight and stuffing their faces with packets if ww chocolate bars.

Birthday was last week so today I've started counting on my phone app, bring it on!

KosherBacon · 24/02/2014 19:19

What's the groupon deal? Hello Crafty!

JanieLovesLuckySocks · 24/02/2014 20:31

3 months online membership for £14.50. Better value than the meetings by far, and access to all the pp values without having to by the shopping lists and eating out guides :)

KosherBacon · 24/02/2014 21:23

I need the meetings which I love and hate in equal proportions!

JanieLovesLuckySocks · 24/02/2014 21:31

Oh there's a monthly pass option with the groupon deal too :)

trainersandaches · 24/02/2014 21:40

I lost 1.5lb this week so have now lost 12.5lb since the start of the year - weighed in at 9stone 9lb tonight.

Am really hoping that I will lose 1.5lbs off next week - that will be a round stone and I will be seeing some family next week who don't know I have been doing WW so it would be lovely to be able to say I had lost a stone in 2014.

Crafty I have found WW far better than SW. I think Slimming World is good if you have a lot to lose but the whole idea of Weight Watchers as a lifestyle change is really positive - it teaches you to eat like a 'slim person' would, I think.

SuperDuperJezebel · 25/02/2014 09:43

The thing for me about WW is that its taught me portion control, and I feel like its sustainable. Having said that, I gained 1/2lb this week. Really not sure how! But I am telling myself 1/2lb is such a tiny amount, and really trying not to be bothered by it. Sometimes these things happen I guess. Hopefully it'll come off next week, and I have still lost 90lb so I'm not doing too badly!

craftynclothy · 25/02/2014 10:18

Wow, 90lb is amazing Shock

Yes, the groupon deal is £14.50 for 3 months of online membership. Think it was about £25 for the one that includes meetings. I can't find any meetings near me that are convenient - they all seem to be 5pm - 7pm sort of time.

trainersandaches · 25/02/2014 11:49

Woo amazingly well done on your 90lb Jezebel! How did you manage to stay motivated?

Like you say, 1/2 lb is nothing at all - if you'd had a glass of water beforehand that might have been it. I am really trying not to obsess if I have the odd week of a small gain - like eating lots of fibrous food will give you a temporary increase, but it all evens out eventually... Grin.

What I didn't like about Slimming World was the obsession about numbers rather than overall shape, at my class at least - going around the class saying what you had gained/lost was quite discouraging for me. If you had a 2lb gain, but then the following week lost 4lb, it was obvious to me that the issue is constipation or a big meal beforehand, but the leader never said anything like 'Oh, but you have lost xxx this month overall' or anything, so I'd feel like the greediest pig on the planet. It was always 'I'm on plan' or 'I'm off plan' rather than just accepting that sometimes your body is a bit heavier than at other times.

I also felt that the focus just on losing pounds didn't make me change my ways. I would just drink less water on the day I had to weigh in if I knew my weight would be up, which is so unhealthy and not a good way to feel. I also felt a lot of the snack ideas we talked about at Slimming World were just disordered eating - lasagne crisps, Smash pizza and Scan Bran cake weren't exactly promoting healthy eating, it was just junk masquerading as health food.

KosherBacon · 25/02/2014 13:20

The bloody star week at SW drove me potty! Arghhhh! Just the bloody name is awful.

annielostit · 25/02/2014 13:37

Afternoon ladies, can I join in? Been following sw since sept 13 and only 9lb down. As others have said "eat what you want" not a good phrase to me. I only need to lose 10lb more but we did it for me previously. Have all the books so f & h with the crumpets thrown in sound good.
Good luck all.x

SuperDuperJezebel · 25/02/2014 13:37

Ahhh, motivation! Well I've always been one of those people who thinks "do it properly, or don't bother". For ages I convinced myself it wasn't that bad, and then I really knew it was. One of my best friends was doing it, and really succeeding and I suddenly realised I was going to be the fat friend. Then we went to Nice and I could only just do the seatbelt up on the plane, with DPs help. And when I saw the holiday pics I was mortified. I feel so good now, and I just don't want to go back to how I was before. I'd always been big, since early teens, and I'd gotten used to it, but it got me down. I never felt good enough, or thought my clothes looked good, and now... I just feel better. And it's addictive. Plus I love the compliments, and discovering new bones I never knew I had, and getting into clothes in normal shops. And I'm getting married in Sept, that helps. Would really like to be at goal by then. Oh I could go on for hours!

trainersandaches · 25/02/2014 14:27

Kosher the 'star week' chat was so annoying - everyone was so afraid of saying 'period'!

Welcome Annie! I did SW for about five months in the summer of 2012 - from my heaviest weight of not far off 12 stone. Then I lost the will to live some of my motivation by the the repetitiveness of the meetings.

I feel as though SW did get me to think about my eating, but the support didn't seem fully there - there was no proper app (not sure if there is now), and I know it sounds a bit critical but the group leader was not very motivating, and was also was one of the heaviest people in the room. I think because she was struggling herself she found it hard to be enthusiastic about healthy eating.

Jezebel It sounds like you are really succeeding! The penny just seems to have dropped for me since I started WW and I have been steadily losing but I do still have moments where I am not fully in control of my portion sizes and eating. I should take a leaf out of your book and just think 'do it properly!'

annielostit · 25/02/2014 14:52

Trainers and aches that's so true about sw leaders, one told me not to eat the bread or drink, she was twice the size of me & I'm not kidding. Last week was national chip week, no inspiration or thought needed there.she tried to tell us about low fat chips. there is a website for members, but they spend most of the time with Facebook. Defo not me,I'm too old.

HalleLouja · 25/02/2014 14:52

To be fair when I used to be on MN conception thread they used to call periods AF. I preferred RTD (Red Tide of Doom!)

KosherBacon · 25/02/2014 18:05

I know of one SW leader who told a colleague "there weren't any fat people in Auschwitz". ??????

trainersandaches · 25/02/2014 19:46

That is OUTRAGEOUS Kosher!

Annie I felt a bit sorry for my SW leader in a way because she had lost a lot of weight (I think she had been about 24 stone) but had put loads back on - she was about a size 20 I would guess.

It did make it hard to have faith in the programme though because she was the one who was supposed to have been a success story but was bigger than most of us there.

The sessions mostly involved telling us all about cheat recipes like 'syn free roulade' Hmm which must have been about 800 calories with the eggs, Quark etc, rather than going over the basics of control and making good choices.

Whereas at my WW the leader is really funny, very understanding about what it's like to be on a diet, and the importance of making long-term changes rather than just quick changes.

BeetlebumShesAGun · 25/02/2014 20:02

Hi ladies, can I join?

Started WW again 8 weeks ago after having my DD. I lost 2 and a half stone with it before I was pregnant so wanting to get my shape back! So far I've lost 13lbs but pretty sure that is down to breastfeeding - anyone else breastfeeding and pointing? I get 40 points a day as a nursing mum - not looking forward to going back to 26 when I give up!

newlark · 25/02/2014 20:40

Can I join you too? I rejoined for the 4th/5th time 4 weeks ago and have lost 8lbs so far. I seem to attempt ww about every 5 yrs or so, stick with it for a few weeks then drift away, ending up heavier than I was before (on my first ww attempt in the mid 1990s I started over a stone lighter than I am now!!!). I have had two children and aged 20 yrs though...

I'm following the online programme, tracking using the app and have been counting pp since day 1 as the simple start thing looked too restrictive and my main issue is portion control. I started on 27 pts per day and am now on 26 plus the weekly allowance of 49. I did look on the messageboards on the ww website but there were too many posts/short thread so I came back to my favourite mumsnet instead :)

I did try SW once in the late 90s but found it too restrictive as I didn't have time to cook and needed to eat out a lot. Given that my main problem is eating too much it didn't help me develop good habits though I'm sure if you stuck to it it would work.

fluffydressinggown · 25/02/2014 22:31

Hi beetlebum and newlark you have both had great starts :)

I braved aqua aerobics today which I am hoping will balance out my meal at Pizza Express tomorrow!

KosherBacon · 26/02/2014 13:23

Hello beetlebum and newlark. You've both had great starts and I hope you carry on with your weight loss.

Beetlebum- I didn't lose any weight whilst I was breastfeeding! Must have been all that cake I ate!

I can't do SW and haven't even tried WW simple start or filling and healthy- I need portion control! I also don't get the eat as much as you want approach. It always made me laugh that in the bumph you get from SW they have a picture of the lady that set it up (something like Mary Elizabeth bramwell) and you can tell she's still overweight, no matter how much soft focus they use! www.edp24.co.uk/polopoly_fs/dscf4129_1_1_1422642!image/1104352409.jpg_gen/derivatives/landscape_630/1104352409.jpg

It's my weigh in tonight so fingers crossed again!

HalleLouja · 26/02/2014 18:13

Welcome newbies Grin .

I lost 1.5lb this week. Was impressed with myself.

Can someone explain to me the gold status business.

KosherBacon · 26/02/2014 20:09

A modest 0.5lb lost this week, but still rounds up the weight loss to 25lb.

trainersandaches · 26/02/2014 21:19

Welcome Beetlebum and Newlark!

Well done on the losses Kosher and Halle - small but mighty losses. I am in awe of people like you Kosher who manage to keep going through the pounds! I hope I will get to my goal too. I mostly find it good to be losing weight but it is a bit EXHAUSTING at times! I did cave at some cakes today - there is a famous cupcake bakery around the corner from my work and someone had brought in cakes from there. I had one and had a taste of the icing but it was overly sickly-sweet.

The guy sitting next to me saw me scraping off the icing so he asked for it and he put it in his tea! So had sugary, buttery tea Confused. Anyway the actual cake bit was delicious so I didn't feel bad. I counted it as 7points and it was well worth it.

My lunches this week have been two crackers with a little tub of Philadelphia, cucumber and some peri peri dip from waitrose, plus handfuls of rocket and two small felafels. Really lovely and fresh-tasting.
