I had a horrible incident today.
I don’t know what caused, if it was the wegovy, but it was scary.
I was coughing and it felt like my throat closed over and I couldn’t breath. Thought I was going to collapse or need to get an ambulance.
I felt like I was coughing up dust. It was really weird but probably only lasted 4/5 minutes. Tears were streaming down my face. I thought I was having anaphylaxis or something. My throat was burnt n I felt sick so might have been reflux or something? Has anyone had anything like this before? I’m nervous it will happen again.

On my word that sounds awful and so scary!!

I’ve never experienced that, but if your throat was burning and you felt sick it could well be reflux… I know reflux can make you cough….

i hope you are ok… has you eaten or drank anything before it started? Might be worth a visit to the doctors?

MorphandMindy · 31/01/2024 07:22

@Anjea No I didn't. It was taken at the same time as my regular dose so after I took the first regular dose, I just popped the needle off, put it on the older pen and binned both pen and needle afterwards. I figured that was pretty low risk.

(It goes without saying that's an off-label use so while I'm happy enough with what I'm doing for me, I should not recommend it to anyone else, for obvious reasons.)

EC22 · 31/01/2024 08:31

I hadn’t eaten for a while when it happened, it was out the blue.
I will see GP if it happens again. I’ve been completely fine since.

Helene2019 · 31/01/2024 09:39

@EC22 hope the doctor gets back to you but an allergic reaction may have other symptoms like swollen tongue/lips/rash etc. was it your first dose?

Indigestion and high stomach acid are common side effects of wegovy. Both give reflux and can cause coughing as the acid is irritating your throat - it can also make it as far as irritating the tubes between your ears and throat! Gaviscon is effective for this.

EC22 · 31/01/2024 12:06

I’ve been on it since November, I went up to 1mg on Saturday. Heartburn/ reflux hasn’t been a symptom I’ve had.

Gingerlygreen · 31/01/2024 13:18

@Mash8586 Nice to have you on board, the first jab is a bit nerve wracking but it's so worth it.
I've got 2 primary aged kids and also worried about the side effects but decided that the side effects of being obese were worse plus the increased risk of serious illness.

On the whole most people don't get debilitating side effects, nausea is common but manageable.

Some get no effects at all. I always feel the effects within a few hours so I take it at lunchtime then when the headache and nausea kicks in I have the evening and night to relax.

It's worth sticking on both this thread and the new starter ones so you can get advice from those of us who have been on it a while and then support from those at the same stage as you.

HolidaySwears · 31/01/2024 14:21

Checking in here! Literally just taken my first 0.25 within the last hour so nothing to report yet, decided to take it with some Lunch just in case I get any Nausea.

Lou4564 · 31/01/2024 14:52

Hi all do you mind if I jump in? My Wegovy pen arrived this morning and I am so nervous to take it 0.25dose partly afraid I won't do it correctly! any advice. I have 12 kg to lose.

AhBiscuits · 31/01/2024 18:02

Welcome @Lou4564 and other newbies.
It's daunting but you should just crack on, you'll be fine. Read the instructions a couple of times then just do it. You'll soon get into the swing of things.

Think if you google side effects there are a lot of people with very extreme side effects. However for most I think it’s mild/managable. I did my my 3rd 0.25 on Sunday night. I find doing it at night I sleep though some of the side effects. I do fine Monday morning that I’m a bit nauseous but that passes as the day goes on. Plus the side effects for me are bearable and worth it for the lack of food chatter in my head.

AhBiscuits · 31/01/2024 18:10

An update on where I am, I've done
4 weeks @ 0.25
5 weeks @ 0.5
2 weeks @ 0.75

I'm feeling good. Good appetite suppression, minimal side effects. I'm planning to move up to 1mg on Monday and hope to be able to stay there for at least 6 weeks.

Just an update for anyone else wondering about first day side effects - been absolutely fine until about 8pm when I started to feel quite tired.

Took it at 1pm, hadn't felt hungry since about 4, ate at around 6:30 (a light broth) now in bed with mild nausea. So about 7 hours to feel like it's actually kicked in. Quite thirsty though so I've drank plenty water!

Gingerlygreen · 31/01/2024 22:48

@AhBiscuits Good to hear it's working well for you, I'm on my 3rd shot of 1mg and find it stings a bit when I administer it whereas I barely felt the lower doses.

Tindrum · 01/02/2024 08:51

I took my shot yesterday and forgot to wait before taking it out. School boy error, you’d think I’d remember since I’ve been doing it since October!

Couple of questions - has anyone cut their carbs whist on Wegovy? Also is anyone doing resistance training? The reason I ask is I haven’t cut carbs but have swapped highly processed food for pulses and whole grains. I also do a resistance training vid 3 times a week. Just wondering if these choices, although healthy, may be slowing down my rate of loss?

Andrasa · 01/02/2024 09:56

What I thought was stomach ache from taking too high a dose of wegovy turned out to be a blocked bile duct and gallstones! Ended up in A&e and had to go for emergency surgery to remove them, and will be having to get my gall bladder removed as soon as it calms down.

apparantly my liver readings were off the charts when I went as I’d assumed pain was injection related so had just ignored it for a bit. I really recommend if anyone is consistently in pain even after only eating clean food they do get it checked out, you can end up doing some serious damage to yourself! The likely causes of mine were losing weight too fast + not drinking enough water.

Annwithout · 01/02/2024 10:20

Real lightbulb moment yesterday!
Last year I had 12 week SW membership, lost a stone exactly but had put 4 pounds back on, story of my life!
4 x 0.25
4 x 0.5
2 x 1.0
18 pounds lost so steady 2lbs per week.
I had a GP appointment for medication review.
When I stood on the scales - there it was - proof I have lost 2 stones altogether.
I know I see it on my own scales every day, but seeing it "in black and white" on the GP scales really knocked me for six. It really is official, I really have lots two stones! Still two more to go, but hey, really loving Wegovy.

Tindrum · 01/02/2024 10:41

@Andrasa how awful! Gosh really sorry this has happened to you. I just had my bloods taken this Monday - just routine check up by my GP rather than because of Wegovy so will be on the look out for the liver result. Hope you are feeling better. Does this mean the end of your Wegovy journey?

Andrasa · 01/02/2024 11:47

@Tindrum Much better now the stones blocking are gone! Big risk of them returning so have to be v careful about what I eat until full gallbladder is done (no cheese, cream, milk, butter, cured meats, red meat, anything tasty basically) but then should be basically normal again.

I was coming to the end of my wegovy journey anyway (I started at 78kg and was aiming for 58, was on about 63), but after not eating for nearly a week I'm sat at 58.5kg. Most of that will be water weight but I imagine only eating untasty food until the surgery will drop me regardless. My wedding is this year so was planning on staying on a lower maintenance dose until that was over with, but now I think it's safer to just come off entirely. It's much harder without the wegovy fixing my food cravings and insulin issues, but we'll see how it goes.

Tindrum · 01/02/2024 11:50

@Andrasa best of luck and hope you have a great wedding.

AhBiscuits · 01/02/2024 12:37

Gosh that sounds awful @Andrasa
I'm glad you're getting sorted.
... Anyone else chugging water now?!

OP posts:
Tindrum · 01/02/2024 14:33

@AhBiscuits yes me and also not feeling as bothered by my slow weight loss!

JONSWIFEY · 01/02/2024 17:31

I took my first dose on Sunday. No side affects atall. Def seen a reduction in apetite and not craving chocolate and wine. I am eating healthy smaller portions. Slightly hungry late afternoon but I can manage it. Started at 12st 3lbs so will be interested to see my weigh in on Sunday.

NoMoreCheddar · 01/02/2024 19:43

Finally managed to get my script filled, but it's for the 0.25 again. I will have done three months on that dose now. I'm okay with it though as I'm still losing albeit very slowly, but with few side effects. I couldn't get hold of the 0.5 anywhere that I tried.

Lovesthebeach · 01/02/2024 19:46

@Andrasa that sounds awful you poor thing. Glad you’re feeling a bit better now though x

Just to give you a bit of hope….. i had gallstones and gallbladder removal 11 years ago after loosing a lot of weight quite quickly…. I’ve been fine on Wegovy, so if you do want to use it in future once you’ve had surgery hopefully you’d be ok x (gallstones worst pain of my life..!!)

Lovesthebeach · 01/02/2024 19:47

Soooo… I don’t think 0.75 is really working for me… my appetite suppression isn’t as good and I’m thinking about food a bit too much for my liking.
I wish I’d pushed on and gone up to 1.0 🤦🏼‍♀️
so think next week I’m gonna go up.. although then I’m gonna have a random 0.5 left in my pen… 😬
