January 2024! Fresh start & develop new habits. Join-in to reset & refresh and become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

Hello all. Things going well and feeling positive again. Been out for my morning 5k walk, managed to avoid the rain both yesterday and today. Yesterday was my first day of dry January too, so feeling happy. My husband was still on the settee with man-flu so wasn't able to do my pre-walk strength training from YouTube, but hopefully can start tomorrow. Yesterday I ate:
B- 2 eggs on toast
L- hm tuna pasta bake (no cheese)
T- Leeks with a bit of bolognese
S- tea and 3 mini cookies

SW 82.2kg

CW 74.2kg
TW 60kg

VallesMarineris · 03/01/2024 10:17

I got back to my pre-Christmas weight a few days ago, and I'm not including that in my WoW. I don't like to have a goal weight, as I start obsessing about numbers. Just want to record how much I lose in half-stone blocks. Hope that's okay.

WoW 2 lbs down since the weekend.

Total loss 2 lbs.

That's actually a really good idea , also you're also always quite close to a goal so must get a positive feeling of succeeding

NothingTraLaLa · 03/01/2024 10:40

Morning all.

First WOW of 2024, and it’s slightly higher than I would like as I have used up my entire pre-Christmas weight loss mince pie buffer. As I am exactly my target weight for the end of 2023 I am not going to complain too loudly, though, and I’m hopeful that the 3 pound gain will fall away quickly. I’ve set a new target weight; once I reach that I’ll see whether I feel like I need to lose more or not.

SW 128 lbs
CW 119 lbs
TW 114 lbs

talkingdeadscot · 03/01/2024 10:48

Morning all, logging in to record my first WOW of 2024.

SW (June 2023) - 93kg
First Goal - 72kg (achieved Christmas 2023)
CW - 71.2kg
GW - 55kg

Very happy with that but do realise that things will really slow down from now on.

Well done to everyone else. I don't post much but I love reading everyone's progress. Keeps me motivated.

Newname2308 · 03/01/2024 10:55

SW Sept ‘23 70kg
WoW 3/1 64.9kg
New TW 56kg

So I’m 1kg up on my best weight pre-Xmas, but I’m starting the downward journey today 💪 I could have been 71kg today, that’s the best way to look at it!
From yesterday I got back on track with no alcohol until Fri/Sat. This will make a big difference in dropping my Xmas kg.
Glad to have this space to share accountability 😊

2024fit · 03/01/2024 10:57

I weigh in daily and input the details into an app which averages out the good/bad/bloated/put on 3 pounds inexplicably in the night type days over a week so you can see a trend rather than a snapshot.
I find this much better at motivating me and saves a lot of angst when the scales don’t go my way on a given day. In the past, a high number that I felt wasn’t justified would have had me running to the biscuit tin

@Undisclosedlocation this is my approach to weighing as well. Gain or loss of 3 pounds or less on its own doesn’t really tell you much IMO unless it’s part of an overall trend eg. Losing two pounds for 3 consecutive weeks.

I also do it this way because back in 2021 I didn’t weigh myself for a few weeks and I was shocked to find I’d put on 8 pounds thanks to insomnia fuelled eating and inactivity. So I do like to keep a closer eye on the scale nowadays so there’s no nasty surprises. For some with ED I know this doesn’t work but it definitely helps me to more neutral about the reading I see.

missfliss · 03/01/2024 11:35

Height 5'6"
SW 179 pounds
CW 162 pounds
TW 154 pounds

However I have gained 4 pounds of muscle 💪 so in reality it's not weight I'm trying to lose, it's fat.

I'm on a process of gradual body recomposition

JumpingJills · 03/01/2024 11:43

Hi all,

I would love to join.

Just braved the scales and the Christmas damage isn't as bad as I'd feared. Still trying to get back to pre-baby fitness to get ready for a new pregnancy (I hope!) in 2024.

CW: 144
End of Jan target: 139
TW: 130

Plan is to get off the sweets and snacks and get back to working out. Stress eating is my downfall so the New Year's resolution is to be more organised to hopefully relieve some of the pressure.

Twopintsprick81 · 03/01/2024 12:03

Hi everyone. I'd love to join as well, starting today, as I feel like crap after gorging on chocolate and wine for 2 weeks.

I won't weigh as it messes with my head and I want to focus more on building some muscle and losing fat, so scale numbers don't always reflect that anyway.
Plan is:
No alcohol (for 4 weeks, then very moderate amounts)
No calorie counting but aim for minimum of 100g protein a day (diet will include lots of Greek yogurt, cottage cheese, eggs, vegetables, lean mince, chicken, porridge with protein powder, protein shakes and beans and pulses).
Start Caroline Girvan iron series and also add in a separate abs workout daily.
Start drinking water and give up my energy drink habit.

I have loads of weights, barbells etc at home and have made up my own strength training programmes in the past but I've heard so many good things about Caroline that I've decided to give her a go.

Sorry for the essay. Good luck everyone. I'm looking forward to using this thread for motivation.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 03/01/2024 12:13

Today's menu

B - boiled egg and toast
L - low calorie home made soup
Snack - mini mince pie (clearing the house of Christmas treats)
D - pinch of nom Cajun dirty rice.

Exercise - Les Mills Shapes class.

I've updated my weight and goals on nutracheck and Apple Watch so good to go!

TheRealHousewife · 03/01/2024 12:35

Hi All

I would like to remind everyone that weighing-in is absolutely optional. I understand how numbers can be triggering for some people and others like myself find them fascinating and motivating in equal measure. Do what works for you.

@VallesMarineris Fabulous! 👍

@ChickenChipsandBeans Well done on getting your walking in; that was a bit of good luck avoiding the rain too 👍

@NothingTraLaLa Sensible frame of mind 👌

@talkingdeadscot Thats fantastic progress, you obviously know what works for you 👍

@Newname2308 Youre well on way to goal 👏

@Undisclosedlocation Good point well made. It’s always a good idea to keep an eye on the long term trends 👍

@missfliss Building muscle is so beneficial! Well done! Sadly for me it’s proving (age and disability) very difficult but I never stop trying 😬

Welcome to the thread @Twopintsprick81 @JumpingJills

I’ve at long last put on my instant blood glucose monitor and I’m shocked by the results so far. Blood glucose levels a bit high and I’m intending to speak to a health care professional.

Tindrum · 03/01/2024 12:57

hi would anyone be able to recommend some good scales? I’d like to be able to differentiate between muscle and fat weight. Thanks 😊

ImALittlePea · 03/01/2024 13:11

Loving seeing the thread so busy!

@Dinkydoo17 I love this... Deep breath. Full stop new paragraph perfect sentiment, especially at this time of year but also applies all year, doesn't it?!

A couple of people have mentioned a DJ thread - what is this?

Regulars will know I don't WoW, I WoF (weigh on Friday) 😁 so just popping on to give a huge high five to everyone who has weighed and posted today. The thing that has kept me going the most on these threads is the sheer accountability we all have with ourselves and each other, regardless of the numbers. It's an incredibly inspirational and supportive place to share this journey. We're all on it from different perspectives, at different times and places in our lives, but there's so much togetherness in our individual endeavours 💪

(Says she, who has still not weighed since before Christmas 👀😆)

Today is my last 'day off' before truly kick-starting Jan. I've got my chicken wrap for lunch, I did cave and had some cheese and crackers late morning (spent the morning running round after the toddler at a play gym, plus my mindset is very much that it's a day off so if I can't enjoy it now it'll just go to waste), and a three course meal and drinks tonight. I will weigh Friday, and then I'll definitely "full stop, new paragraph" my mindset and work on getting to where I want to be.

LumionaMoonsplash · 03/01/2024 13:17

@ImALittlePea DJ is dry January. Not something I usually partake in but but I'm giving it a go this year in a bid to shed some lbs.

JumpingJills · 03/01/2024 13:41

@Tindrum I use Renpho - got it on Amazon for about £20 and it auto updates MyFitnessPal as well.

@TheRealHousewife what is the blood glucose monitor? Is it a medical thing or something you can buy to use out of interest?

PatienceOfEngels · 03/01/2024 14:38

Good luck to everyone doing Dry January. I gave up alcohol on the 9th January last year and don't miss it at all (apart from a glass of Bailey's!). I've tried various non-alcoholic replacements and most of them have just been sugary shite! NA wine is especially grim! If I'm out for a special occasion I will have an AF gin and tonic or maybe an AF beer.

Just done Day 2 of YWA 30 days of yoga. Nice gentle start. Want to go for a walk but chucking it down again. Might clear up later between 8 and 10pm so may see if I can rag myself off the sofa then.

HighlandCowRose · 03/01/2024 14:41

Meant to ask WeirdPookah which new vegan products did you pick up in aldi, I got some of the marinated tofu and 'chicken' breast fillets, we had these last night, they were surprisingly nice.

Do you have the aldi smoked tofu, it's really lovely

NphysT · 03/01/2024 15:22

Hi all,

Weighed in this morning but only getting a chance to post now. Will try to post on here as much as possible.

WOW:

CW: 12stone 13.4lbs
GW: 10 stone 7

Would like to ideally hit my target by the summer when we decide to ttc again. Hoping to get into the habit of exercising a minimum of 2 times a week while I'm currently off work so the routine is already established when I go back.
Does anyone have any beginner yoga recommendations on YouTube or anywhere?
Thanks x

WeirdPookah · 03/01/2024 15:25

@HighlandCowRose I got the sausage patties, like USA style breakfast sausage. The feta and red pepper bites, spicy not-fish bites and the pesto cheddar sausages from frozen. Also picked up the not-smoked salmon from the chiller.
I haven't tried their smoked tofu, but love the Lidl one, got 2 blocks last week.

Today I made the children join in with a Joe Wicks, we did the Boxing Day one (terrible sound quality). Then went round my parents and my children have been obnoxious and loud and broke something. So ashamed. Not had a great day, reduced to tears in the end.

B: Black bean burrito
L: omelette and stewed balsamic tomatoes
D: vegetable chickpea curry

Did have cream in my coffee at my parents, but didn't have anything to eat.

I weighed in on Monday, so I didn't today. I prefer Friday and I also am hoping for a decent bloating drop to show up by Friday to spur me on.

secondtimemumma · 03/01/2024 15:47

A loss of 0.7kg for me since last check so I’m happy with that!
I am also doing dry January and beyond that hoping to not really drink at home anymore.
@PatienceOfEngels I am definitely going to listen to the recent Dr Chatterjee podcast on processed foods. I always enjoy his podcasts though they are a bit long!
Feeling a little run down this week so I am going to do gentle stretching only today and won’t be back to proper exercise until (hopefully) next week.
Halloumi and lentil salad for dinner tonight one of my favourites!

FootballFanGirl · 03/01/2024 16:29

Hi all. I haven't had chance to I way yet but will be weighing in Saturday. My weight is weekly. I have super struggled today with being so hungry!!
Breakfast- overnight oats made with Greek yogurt and banana, drizzle of honey
Lunch- boiled egg and ham salad wholemeal tortilla
Snack- 4 cracked black pepper thins with reduced fat cream cheese and chicken and an apple
For tea I'm having- baked sweet potato with tuna
I didn't have a huge amount of calories yesterday and am really struggling with my protein intake so I think that's why I'm extra hungry today! Hope everyone else is doing well!

HighlandCowRose · 03/01/2024 16:55

WeirdPookah I saw the fish bites in the book but not in my store, hopefully next week.
I got the salmon, haven't tried it yet, also got the slices to try instead of quorm ones.
The steaks last year were lovely, I hoped they'd be bringing them back, still hopeful.

Patchworksack · 03/01/2024 17:11

Hi - hope everyone is off to a good start. My step count has improved now my daughter is back at school - currently on 12k for today. We’ve got a Green Chef box on offer this week so that is low carb calories counted dinners sorted - pesto chicken with roasted squash, green beans and salad tonight. Doing ok with dry January but missing that ‘ahh’ moment that a glass of wine gives me. Facebook is relentlessly advertising low/no alcohol drinks at me - any recommendations?

ThreeRingCircus · 03/01/2024 17:23

@NphysT I really like Sarah Beth Yoga videos on YouTube. Lots of people recommended Yoga with Adrienne too but personally I prefer Sarah Beth's style.

PatienceOfEngels · 03/01/2024 17:45

@NphysT I do love Yoga with Adriene. My favourite 30 day series is True.
