January 2024! Fresh start & develop new habits. Join-in to reset & refresh and become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

@secondtimemumma I often listen in the car on the way to work or when walking alone in the evening. And sometimes over a couple of sessions as well!

afaloren · 03/01/2024 18:54

Hello, may I join? I lost 13 stone in 2019/2020 but have put 5 back on. Want to get it off. Still much smaller than I was at my biggest but it’s impacting my fitness and of course none of my lovely clothes fit.

Doing MFP and exercising. Dry January too.

Started on Jan 1:

B - grilled full English
D - pulled pork and salad

Jan 2:

B - gym kitchen protein pot
L - grilled bacon medallions with fruit
D - Mackerel with green veg and a Lindahl’s yoghurt

Today:

B - gym kitchen protein pot
L - mushroom soup with gluten free toast and a clementine
D - leftover pulled pork with green veg and a Lindahl’s yoghurt

Been walking every day (this is normal, have a Labrador, but I’ve upped it) and doing 30 Days of Yoga which I find so hard but always glad when it’s done.

I’m a creature of habit and tend to eat a lot of the same things so my menus will probably seem very boring to most!

maybein2022 · 03/01/2024 19:01

Lovely to see this thread so busy! Well done to all so far, some really good starts. I don’t weigh in on Wednesdays, my weigh day is Mondays and actually that was good this year as I could properly start afresh!

@TheRealHousewife sorry to hear about your blood sugar levels- out of interest, what sort of numbers are you seeing? I was borderline GD in my last pregnancy and I have been wondering if I should look at my levels. I need to get my Hba1c levels done really just to check.

Today has been good, headaches are less and have walked more. Day 3 of no Diet Coke and no added sugar- have had a few sweeteners in tea and coffee but once they’re finished I’m not buying more.

That is amazing! 13 stone! May I ask how you did it? I’m sure you’ll lose the 5 again- you clearly have amazing stamina and willpower! X

WeirdPookah · 03/01/2024 19:09

@afaloren I lost 13 stone too back in 2010, two difficult pregnancies, PND meant I put a lot back on. I'm looking to lose about 60lbs (AGAIN) this time around.

@HighlandCowRose we loved the scampi bites, no sign of them either. They were really nice.

afaloren · 03/01/2024 19:25

@maybein2022 thank you! I had a gastric bypass which helped me get the first eight stone off with relative ease (it’s not a magic wand but it is like fighting this battle with a tank rather than a bow and arrow) then once my body had got used to that I lost the rest with calorie counting and exercise. I had tried every diet going and needed the surgical help. I’m living proof though that the bypass doesn’t do it for you, you can and will put weight back on if you don’t stick to the eating plan and exercise.

@WeirdPookah Bloody well done you! We can lose it again! We’ve done it before after all.

Penguinmouse · 03/01/2024 19:41

Down 1.6kg from my first weigh in on Monday - I realise most of this is water weight but I’ve had large calorie deficits and walked at least 10K steps each day.

HighlandCowRose · 03/01/2024 20:11

Had an OK day, felt a bit grumpy cause I'm back to work tomorrow, haven't eaten my unhappiness though

B choc au pain
L veggie burger with salad
D viv salmon fillet ratatouille and pasta
S some popped crisp type things my dm gave me and plan a glass of white wine

Stripyunicorn · 03/01/2024 20:23

Finally caught up with the thread, it moves fast!

SW 13 stone
CW 13 stone
GW 10 stone

Not done too bad the past couple of days, been trying to listen to my body and eat when hungry rather than for the sake of it.
Also doing 20 mins of yoga daily which I'm loving so far.

Spudlover · 03/01/2024 20:50

@afaloren @WeirdPookah some seriously impressive losses there, well done. You’ve only regained a small proportion of what you lost, so no doubt you can do it. It’s so hard isn't it, people are human.

Weighed in this morning with a 5lb Christmas gain. Could have been worse given my consumption.

SW: 184lbs
CW: 167lbs
GW: 140lbs
I weigh in pounds as it’s the only way to get any accuracy with Noom!

Dinner tonight was a Chinese as it’s DD’s last night at home before going back to uni and she was desperate for one. I just had a stir fry with skinny konjac noodles.

B: Hard boiled eggs and pea shoots
L: Chicken and avocado salad
S: Cottage cheese
D: Prawn and vegetable Chinese stir fry, konjac noodles.

And 45 mins pilates.

EndlessGuineaPigCycle · 03/01/2024 20:53

Hope everyone had a good day! I managed to stay on plan (just about!) today, after a slightly rocky start yesterday.
I did some batch cooking ahead of returning to work tomorrow so am hoping that will keep me on the straight and narrow, as I'll have something quick and healthy to reach for.
I rediscovered an old recipe that I used to make, https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/aubergine-tomato-parmesan-bake-melanzane-alla-parmigiana#commentsFeed. I absolutely love this, it's so tasty and low calorie too, if you use oil spray.
Not much protein to speak of though, so I had an omelette for my other meal. As a veggie, I do find protein a struggle sometimes, as I can't stand quorn or any other kind of fake meat either. Another post reminded me about protein yoghurts, I'll have to remember to stock up.

Aubergine, tomato & Parmesan bake (Melanzane alla Parmigiana) recipe | BBC Good Food

Every Italian cook has their own version of this classic aubergine dish. It's even better made a day ahead, from BBC Good Food.

https://www.bbcgoodfood.com/recipes/aubergine-tomato-parmesan-bake-melanzane-alla-parmigiana#commentsFeed.

Twopintsprick81 · 03/01/2024 22:36

Not a great day for me considering I'm on day 1 but I'm kind of just easing myself back into healthy eating.

B:slice of seeded toast and a

protein shake
L:prawns with cauliflower rice and veg and a lindahl quark pot
D:2 meat free burgers, broccoli and no added sugar baked beans.

Snacks were a couple of chocolates and 3 ryvita with philly and tomatoes. Oh, and a bag of quavers!
First day of no alcohol and I feel so much better for it mentally. Keeping off the drink will be my biggest challenge.

To anyone else who hasn't had a perfect day, we need to remember that any improvements, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction.

LegoTherapy · 03/01/2024 23:29

Well ds and I had a McFlurry with our McDonald's and enjoyed ourselves so I regret not a single calorie. I'll be walking about 10 miles tomorrow so it's all good. Friday is a good walking day too thanks to swimming after school although we go the quick way instead of the scenic way now that it's dark down by the river. Not safe until it's light again. I'll look forward to that. Even so Friday should be around 8 miles. Bring it on!

LeftyLou · 03/01/2024 23:46

Officially starting the year at 14stone After losing 1 lbs this week. 2.5 altogether over christmas. Not too bad but now it really is time to knuckle down.

My measurements
C 38
W 36.5
H 45

Starting weight 14 stone
First small target 13 stone 10
Ultimate target 9 stone

My goals this week are
Plenty of veg
No snacking
Write everything down
Move my body a little bit every day

Out for a meal on Sunday. I'll enjoy it and have pudding too so that will basically be my treat for the week. Feeling excited to get some good wholesome nutritional food in to my system.

I don't have a target date I have tried aiming for certain numbers by a certain time and it just never works for me so I an just going to take each day as it comes.

Its very early days but maybe 2024 may be the year I start to feel good about myself and how I look.

missfliss · 04/01/2024 07:03

Left it for 3 days after Xmas to weigh myself and for the second day in a row the scales have dropped.

Now what this shows is that the scale weight is not the best measure of progress on its own.

I cannot have lost 1.4 pounds of fat overnight !

So whilst I am pleased that the scale now shows only a small gain for December of 1.4 pounds versus November... it does help show that for most of us, when we say we want to lose weight we don't really mean that - we do mean we want to burn fat.

So just a reminder that our bodies are made of bones, muscles, organs, water and fat and the scales will show the combined weight of all of those things.

It is absolutely possible and normal for the scale weight to fluctuate up and down whilst you burn fat. In fact if you are building muscle alongside burning fat ( body recompositioning) sometimes you can stay in the same weight range but lose a lot of inches and look totally different without changing weight!

Just a reminder - the scales are only one measure of progress, I really recommend taking measurements and even photos to help build a better picture.

missfliss · 04/01/2024 07:07

Picture to illustrate my point above ( and yes, I too would be quite happy to look like the first picture let alone the second TBH!)

Thank for you for the helpful post!

This is something I need to remember this year as the scales can certainly bring me down at times.

ThisIsntThe80sPat · 04/01/2024 07:39

I've been easing back into it at the moment as I'm still in the UK (I live in Germany), and so I'm still seeing family / friends which involves eating (like today where our family new years day lunch is taking place due to my auntie being ill on new years day!). But I'm incorporating all that into the day and at least sticking to the calories, even if not the macros. And we are walking to and from aunties instead of taking the car.

Went for a 45 minute walk yesterday morning, including a steep 12 minute incline which got tough at the end. I love walking and hiking so will be incorporating that into my life more over the next months. And DH and I are going to plan some spring hikes in the Alps which will motivate me to get out locally and weekly!

MrsPepperpotty · 04/01/2024 07:58

I've been away since new year and got back last night, so I'm starting today. Just weighed myself to get a starting weight:
SW 15st 4lb
CW 15st 4lb
GW 11st 11lb

I'll be using MyFitnessPal to track calories.

Good luck everyone!

MuthaHubbard · 04/01/2024 08:20

Right, I've had to weigh ahead of op today. I didn't want to look but starting weight is 148lbs - which is actually a little less than the last time I weighed before Xmas.
Looking to drop 10-14lbs by girls hol in June.
I watched a lady on Lorraine the other morning who said she picked a word for the year rather than make resolutions which I like the idea of. So I've picked two that go hand in hand - consistency & discipline. Making sure I have both daily, will hopefully lead to success

TheRealHousewife · 04/01/2024 09:15

Good Morning

@ImALittlePea great post you shared yesterday ❤️ Have you weighed in yet? 😬

@JumpingJills I bought it from Libre. I was wait listed for the Zoe programme for a couple of years, then at assessment I was told I unable to participate due to being celiac. I’m interested in which foods spike my blood sugars etc. Anything at all carby does!

@secondtimemumma @Penguinmouse @LeftyLou @missfliss Well done on your losses 👍

@Patchworksack Great step count k12. 👏

Welcome to the thread @afaloren @MrsPepperpotty

@maybein2022 Fasting BS 6.5 and 10.2 3hours after food. Today fasting was 5.1 so much better. Interestingly my blood pressure on my worst readings for blood sugars was in the hypertension bracket. This morning blood pressure back to optimal so not too worried but it does demonstrate how all our health systems interact and affect each other.

@HighlandCowRose Well done on not eating your feelings 👏

Thank you for sharing the recipe @HighlandCowRose 👌

@Twopintsprick81 Loved the sentiment of your post and totally agree! No one is perfect or on it all the time but returning to centre is the key.

Loved your post yesterday @missfliss 👌

@ThisIsntThe80sPat Walking and hiking are some of the best forms of exercise we can do. Great for all round fitness. Well done on getting your walks in whilst on holiday.

@MuthaHubbard Thinking of you today ❤️ Let us know how you are when able.

Menu
Meal 1 - Half portion minestrone soup. 2 egg Mediterranean omelette.
Meal 2 - Cod, carrots, peas, green beans and cauliflower.
Tea, black coffee and water.

Morning everyone, I've braved the scales today (a day late oops) and it looks like the water weight from all the Christmas chaos has come off! Phew. A loss of 1.5kg so feeling a bit more back to normal and back on track now DH is back at work and there's some semblance of routine again. I just need a bit of a plan of action for the weekend because I always find those trickier weight loss wise. @missfliss Thanks for the post - I used to do lots of strength training before coming down with injuries a while ago and I definitely look bigger eventhough I weigh less than I did then now, so a very welcome reminder. Hoping to get back into it in the new year 😊

Wishing everyone a great day x
