January 2024! Fresh start & develop new habits. Join-in to reset & refresh and become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

I'll join. I'm not the best at keeping up to date on these threads but I'd like to try. I'm on WL meds and lost a lot in the first month but it has stalled in the last month which is frustrating. I suspect it is due to the weight training I'm doing. My body shape is changing nicely but the scales aren't reflecting it. I'll not let it defeat me and keep on focusing on a healthy way of life. For far too long I've been a lazy, unfit couch potato that craves junk and I need to switch my focus to healthier living. I've quit smoking and vaping in the last 10 yrs. Next is reducing sugar and processed foods and alcohol. I'm on the DJ thread too.

Height: 5'4
SW: 15.0 size 20
CW: 13.11 size 16/18
GW: not sure, I've not been under 12st since i was a teen. First I'd like to see what I look like at 10.7 and then keep going a half stone at a time to see where I end up.

Since Xmas Day I've not been overdoing it food wise and getting my steps in if I can't get to the gym and I'm pleased I didn't gain over Xmas.

Smashed the gym yesterday even though I had a terrible night's sleep and bad period pain.
Yesterday meals;
B: banana and flat white coffee
L: poached egg on wholeweat roll
D: R chicken thigh, hm roast potatoes, veg and gravy

Today:
B: banana and flat white
L: tuna jacket potato
D: cheese burger on wholewheat roll with large salad

ThreeRingCircus · 03/01/2024 07:58

Thank you @missfliss your post resonated with me. It's tempting to think I just need to get this weight off as quickly as possible but you're completely correct, it needs to be sustainable and a lifelong change. I've yo-yo dieted in the past and it hasn't worked e.g. I lost 2 stone on Slimming World a few years ago but put it all back on again (and more) once I stopped.

I think my goal for this year is to lose half of what I want to overall. If I can lose just over 2 stone I'll be in the 12st bracket which I haven't seen for 6 years!

Today's plan

B - coffee and a banana
L - two egg omelette with tomatoes and an apple
D - vegetable curry with cauliflower rice

E - I'm working today but will do a walk at lunchtime

PatienceOfEngels · 03/01/2024 08:01

First WOW for 2 weeks: +0.1kg - very pleased with that given we've had Christmas away in the UK, New Year and my birthday.

SW 77kg (beginning October 2023)
CW 70.1kg
Interim GW 68kg
GW 63kg

-6.9kg in 13 weeks. Only 2.1kg to interim target (healthy BMI) and half way to my final target.

Welcome to everyone joining for the first time.

Great reminder @missfliss that slow and steady is most achievable. If I put myself on a super restricted diet then I know I'll crack at some point. I was listening to a Michael Moseley "Just One Thing" special on weight loss yesterday and the interviewee said it right - 'the best diet is the one you'll stick with'.

I don't calorie count as I get obsessive or can't keep it up (when you're cooking almost everything from scratch as we do it can get very time consuming). I only did it at the beginning of October to reset my expectations of portion size. I find anything more than 12:12 or 13:11 difficult to maintain so stick with 12 hour eating window. Morning snack is normally fruit and veg (We eat early so find I don't need an afternoon snack). Whole foods and minimally processed foods instead of UPF.

I don't eat any low fat products, avoid sugar and sweeteners (would rather have home baking with sugar if it comes to it, honey). We eat butter instead of marg/spread, olive oil instead of other vegetable oils, Greek or sometimes natural yoghurt not flavoured/low fat. The most UPF that we eat regularly is bread (though I have reduced this massively to 1 slice a day of a rye style bread with no added sugar) and stock cubes in home cooking.

I've noticed that since I reduced caffeine and cut UPF/sugar that increasing it has a huge effect on my body (I only drink coffee with breakfast and then caffeine free for the rest of the day or midday at the latest. A few months ago I had a homemade tiramisu with espresso after dinner and found I couldn't get to sleep that night!). I'm getting better at listening to my body and making medium/long term choices over a dopamine hit.

I don't excessively exercise, just focusing on gentle walking and yoga (I really want to do more regular yoga for relaxation). Food is definitely where I'm going to lose weight. Exercise and getting outside is super important for my mental health. Listening to a Chatterjee podcast the other week which talked about exercise - they said exercise is not an anti-depressant but not doing exercise is a depressant. Made me realise how important it is for me!

Thanks for the round ups and inspirational posts @TheRealHousewife and everyone else for sharing their progress and stories. It really does help having somewhere to put it all down and reflect.

Happy January everyone!

PatienceOfEngels · 03/01/2024 08:03

Today
-boiled egg and rye toast with butter, coffee
-harissa chicken and orzo (with peppers, tomatoes, garlic
-pea soup
-snacks - apple/satsumas/pear

YWA 30 days of yoga day 2, evening walk round the neighbourhood.

Lazysundayafternoon2024 · 03/01/2024 08:12

So glad I joined this group, you lot are so inspirational! I'm loving seeing what you're eating as it's giving me ideas. I'm so going to put the duck rolls on my list for a dinner, and chicken satay sticks for snacks. Yum!

So I was playing with the nutracheck app earlier and it even logs gousto meals which is brilliant! I am worried about keeping up with the logging, so this will make my life so much easier and i think ill use gousto one a month to have a break from weighing everything and logging every item i eat. Everything is calorie counted too which helps. I managed to get 4 recipes for a family of 4 for £28 too using a code. Let me know if anyone wants the code too and I'll share.

This morning I weighed super early as I was up at 5.30 for my exercise class. Lost a lb after my fast yesterday. Going to have a protein shake mid morning and then a cinnamon raisin Warburton thin with loads of butter for lunch (not the healthiest but hoping the calories i burned this morning will help!) Dinner I'm thinking about cajun spicy chicken pasta, or something like that, undecided atm.

Good luck for today everyone!

SW: 11st 12lb
CW: 11st 10lb
GW: 10st
Total loss: 2lbs.

Lazysundayafternoon2024 · 03/01/2024 08:17

@PatienceOfEngels What is a chatterjee podcast please? I would be interested in listening to it. Thank you!

weight2lose · 03/01/2024 08:18

I'll join too. 10.5 stone and 5'3. Exercise once a week but trying to do it twice from now on. Good luck everyone!

DaisySnowdrop · 03/01/2024 08:21

Good morning all :) weighed in this morning and have lost 3 pound this week (majority being water I imagine)

So

SW:14st 8
CW:14st 5
GW: 9st 7-10 stone

Total Lost: 3 pound
Start BMI- 34.8
Current BMI- 34.3

I’m 5ft4 for reference :)

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 03/01/2024 09:01

Braved the scales - 11st. Disappointed to be slightly heavier than I was at the start of last year, but I was expecting it after what was a very difficult year. Hoping for a quick whoosh as I get back to a healthier regime in January.

@Lazysundayafternoon2024 nutracheck is great for storing meals, so you quickly build up your regular breakfast/lunch/meals which makes it easier to log. You still have to weigh ingredients each time but once you've got a bank of meals in it's fairly faff free.

Back to the calorie counting for me today, and a Les mills strength development class!

Winterpinks · 03/01/2024 09:02

Good morning.

SW 11st
CW 10st 2
GW 9st 7

I put 5lbs on in December.
I will find it hard to shift them until the children go back to school next week because I can’t get out for long walks and they are always hungry or eating which makes me eat too.

I tried to do an online Yoga session yesterday, but was totally uninspired and bored so didn’t finish it. Maybe a live class would make me more accountable. The January fug and pmt are not helping.

Onwards and Upwards!

EndlessGuineaPigCycle · 03/01/2024 09:08

Morning everyone, just a quick message to log my WOW.

SW 81.2kg
CW 80.9kg
Interim GW 77kg
GW 73kg

ThreeRingCircus · 03/01/2024 09:13

Officially doing my WOW to keep accountable even though I've only just started. 1lb off already so I'll take that 😂

SW: 15st 1lb
CW: 15st exactly
GW: 11st

DomesticElf · 03/01/2024 09:14

This thread is lively!
WOW:

SW 70kg
CW 60kg
GW 50 kg

+0.5kg gain over the holidays. Not bad, I expected worse given the excesses! Now back to it.

Undisclosedlocation · 03/01/2024 09:19

SW 9st 13.6
CW 9st 12.2
GW - not fully decided yet but under 9stone 7lb
All weights are weekly averages

First weigh in for me as I started getting back to normal just after Christmas. I weigh in daily and input the details into an app which averages out the good/bad/bloated/put on 3 pounds inexplicably in the night type days over a week so you can see a trend rather than a snapshot.
I find this much better at motivating me and saves a lot of angst when the scales don’t go my way on a given day. In the past, a high number that I felt wasn’t justified would have had me running to the biscuit tin! Yesterday I had a bad eating day and the scales went up overnight- but my weekly average showed no change. So long as I get back on track today, that will just be a maintenance day, not a failure

buzzofthebumblebee · 03/01/2024 09:21

SW -12 0
CW - 12 0
GW - 11 0

Must start logging food & calories again to work out what to eat to loose.
Always amazed at how little it actually is!

Well done on losses so far.

LegoTherapy · 03/01/2024 09:22

Morning all.
WOW of 55.7kg this morning so dropping nicely. Well done for all the losses and don't stress if you've stayed the same or gained-you'll get there. Slow and steady never lost the race.

I don't think I've ever seen these threads so busy! Must be the new year effect 😃

Have a great day y'all and don't forget your 🍾 (that's water to the newbies).

tweetypi · 03/01/2024 09:31

SW 13.3
CW 12.13
GW 10

Pleased with my first 5 days on Fast800. I had planned to start today but kicked myself into gear a few days ago and I'm so pleased I've dropped into the next stone bracket, very motivating!

I'm finding the restrictions tough but am hoping to stick with it for the full 12 weeks and knock most of my baby weight on the head.

Well done to all the WOWers today!

PatienceOfEngels · 03/01/2024 09:35

@Lazysundayafternoon2024 Dr Rangan Chatterjee's podcast "Feel Better, Live More". Some really inspirational episodes all about health, diet, sleep, exercise etc. The one I was mentioning is #408. I don't always agree with everything (the title for this one says that depression and anxiety are not disorders, which as someone recently diagnosed with Social Anxiety Disorder after 30 years of struggling I do not agree with!) but often lots of nuggets of wisdom. I'm looking forward to listening to the next one just released today on UPF with Chris van Tulken.

TheRealHousewife · 03/01/2024 09:43

Good Morning All

It’s great to see so many of you joining in. You’ve taken a fantastic first step forward (new joiners) but the real deal breaker is to keep going. If you fall off the wagon, just get back on. No loss = keep going. Gain = keep going. Struggling = keep going. Bad day at work = keep going. Whatever happens just keep going! This time next week, next month, next year you’ll be pleased you did. Visualise how you want to look and feel and takes steps to get you there. You can do this 👍❤️

Great post @LegoTherapy Embrace whatever the scale says. It is what it is. For it to be any different is in your control and I know you’ll boss it👍

@ItsTapasTime A good 💩 will see you right 😬

@missfliss Great post. It underlines what these threads are about 👍 There are no quick fixes, no magic bullet and no short cuts.

Welcome to the thread @Teaandchocolate2222 @LumionaMoonsplash @weight2lose

@WhatWouldTheDoctorDo You've faced your demons which is tough! Braving the scales isn’t easy but you know where you’re at now. You'll soon be in a routine and reaching your goals 👍

Well done on your losses!

Menu
Meal 1 - Minestrone Soup
Meal 2 - Chicken curry and stir fried sprouts/leeks
Tea, black coffee and water.

The scales were a shock this morning, I need to really step back from the treats, I read somewhere "it's not a treat if you have it every day". I need to adopt that mantra.
Logging everything on mfp from today too.
SW: 15st
CW: 15st
GW: 11st (but am going to be delighted with every lb, half stone, stone etc).

HighlandCowRose · 03/01/2024 10:14

missfliss I agree completely,

I've quite begrudgingly realised that quick doesn't work for me, I've always tried to get the weight off as quickly as possible and told myself I'll adopt the new good habits once I've lost and look and feel how I want. I know it's obvious but for me actually feels like quite a big realisation.

I'm hoping i can manage the slow and steady approach, I usually get very despondent when the scales don't go in the direction I want and quit.

The headache, My dh is also trying to drop some weight, he's low carbing though and cut caffeine, he's had a terrible headache for the last 16 hours so far.

I weighed on Monday 1st, would it be better to switch to Wednesday

Enjoyed my meals yesterday
B: 1 slice of toast with hummus
L: Salad, peri peri 'chicken", seeded bread
D: Asian salad, with fake chicken
S: small glass of wine, tiny Christmas tiffin
(The wine was not a pub measure small but was small to me) 😳

VallesMarineris · 03/01/2024 10:17

I got back to my pre-Christmas weight a few days ago, and I'm not including that in my WoW. I don't like to have a goal weight, as I start obsessing about numbers. Just want to record how much I lose in half-stone blocks. Hope that's okay.

WoW 2 lbs down since the weekend.

Total loss 2 lbs.
