January 2024! Fresh start & develop new habits. Join-in to reset & refresh and become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

Thanks @TheRealHousewife I just had been doing SO well, zero foods with added sugar since Jan 1st. And much as I feared it has led to feeling like I need more again.

Had a horrible nights sleep, getting battered by this storm, and it's so loud and threatening.

Used up another cupboard lurking item today as inspired by the Pantry Challenge thread, a tin of Laverbread, bought on holiday in 2019! Only just out of date, and now finally stopped reminding me it was expensive!

B: black bean burrito
L: wholemeal toast spread with laver, peppery fried eggs, tomatoes
D: mango, chickpea korma, cauliflower

buzzofthebumblebee · 22/01/2024 14:09

I've never seen such pointy peppers @TheRealHousewife - your meals always look delicious, especially your kale, butter bean & halloumi stir fry which I promise I will make one of these days. And thanks for thoughts for my DF. Old age is inevitable, but still heartbreaking.

No idea in the slightest what laverbread is @WeirdPookah ... off to google ... wasn't expecting that at all !! Taste any good? Don't think I'll be seeking it out though

TheRealHousewife · 22/01/2024 14:28

@buzzofthebumblebee Thank you & You’re welcome. It is upsetting to see our nearest and dearest get older and become more infirm/ill. ❤️

@WeirdPookah Out of all the weathers we have, strong winds I fear the most! I agree it was very loud last night and I nearly slept downstairs as worried it’d blow the roof off. In regards to sleep and appetite; Poor sleep is a contributing factor to over eating in the following days as it messes with our ghrelin (sp) and leptin hormones so you’re up against. I hope you get more settled sleep tonight.

@buzzofthebumblebee it was ok, my husband liked it more than me, but it's not something I'm in a hurry to get again! If when we are on holiday again, and somehow it's offered on a Welsh Breakfast, as a popular way of serving it is an oat patty type thing with it in, I would eat it. But not going to buy another tin! I have no idea where the "bread" part of the names comes from, laver is the same kind of seaweed on sushi I think.

@TheRealHousewife we are now getting battered by the NEXT named storm, we only live two streets back from the seafront, you can hear the sea crashing when we are in bed, and the wind is wild. I was all un-nerved yesterday.

Just eaten 2 small, fancy marzipans I got for Christmas. Up to 1500 calories for the day, but it's more the feeling of downward spiral. I need to be better!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 22/01/2024 21:50

Just popping in with today's menu

B - boiled egg and toast
L home made tomato and sweet potato soup, falafels, humous, apple
D - halloumi, potato, cauliflower, broccoli tray baked with some Lebanese spice and finished off with lemon juice and pomegranate seeds.

Snack - bag of quavers

Exercise - les mills strength class, also did a flexibility stretch type 20 minute season this morning.

Tomorrow will be tricky - out all day for work and lunch is provided. There will be huge slices of cake 🙄

afaloren · 22/01/2024 22:23

Another day on plan.

B - Banana, protein yoghurt
L - Leftovers, clementines
D - The rest of the Unstuffed Peppers
S - 3 babybel lights
E - 2 x dog walk, yoga, cardio session at the gym

Been to the cinema this evening. Every time I go I’m reminded of when I struggled to fit in the seat! Glad I’m not back there even if I’m not where I want to be.

ThreeRingCircus · 23/01/2024 08:29

Morning all, some lovely sounding menus at the moment. I love halloumi so will try some of your recipes with that.

I had a good day yesterday and have planned for today so I don't go off track. DH is out for the evening tonight which previously I always saw as an opportunity to get myself a takeaway and eat chocolate! I've already prepped my dinner for tonight instead so I don't get sidetracked, that's what I'm having.

Today's plan:

B - greek yoghurt with flaxseeds and raspberries
L - stuffed mushrooms on sourdough
D - lentil kofta in tomato sauce with orzo

TheRealHousewife · 23/01/2024 09:13

Good Morning All

@WeirdPookah I hope the weather is more settled where you are!

@WhatWouldTheDoctorDo Good luck navigating the provided food today! Could you take anything of your own? Nuts, fruit, cheese, boiled eggs ?

@afaloren Thats a great NSV! 👍 How was the film?

@ThreeRingCircus Forward planning is key, especially when changing previous habits 👍

Menu
Meal 1 - Mackerel, cheese, onion stuffed peppers (cooked in air-fryer) Pecans.
Meal 2 - Fish, carrots, peas, broccoli & dill sauce.
Tea, black coffee & water.

Heres hoping storm Jocelyn isn’t as brutal as storm Isha!

Morning all

Sorry to have been MIA, time has disappeared the last few days. I'm in a right funk of a mood, it feels at least partly hormonal (I don't get periods because of the pill I'm on, but I still get the occasional hormonal rage fluctuation 👀), but also just feels like there's a lot of external stressors in life at the moment.

Trying not to let it derail me 😬

The weekend was quite weekendy for me in terms of food and drink choices. I ended up working a 6 hour shift Sunday though so there was zero snacking and many more steps then there would have been otherwise.

Yesterday, I had leftover fajitas for lunch (after a workout class), and we ended up going for dinner as my shift was cancelled again (one of the aforementioned stressors - this keeps happening and it's really annoying), I went for chicken schnitzel with parmesan mash, lots of green veg and a mushroom sauce. Probably way over calories, but very nice.

Things I (miraculously) said no to yesterday: bowl of excess chips at work, offered to me by the chefs; a glass of wine; pudding after dinner. Instead I had sparkling elderflower with dinner, and 3 squares of chocolate with a cuppa after the kids were in bed.

Today's plan:
Lunch - scrambled eggs loaded with mushrooms, peppers, tomatoes and some cheese
Dinner - either baked potatoes, or risotto. Depending on my mood and energy.

I'm hoping another quiet, early night will help lift this mood of mine. I hate how snappy and teary I am. My poor family 😬🤦‍♀️😅

Have a good day everyone!

afaloren · 23/01/2024 10:44

@TheRealHousewife it was a weird film. It’s called Poor Things from the same team as The Favourite which I loved. It was certainly interesting but I’m not sure I actually liked it!

Whatsgoingonwithmyhead · 23/01/2024 11:06

I am back up to 11 stone today from 10stone 13 yesterday (despite a 17,000 step hike & weights at the gym and sticking to all my food rules yesterday!!)

2024fit · 23/01/2024 12:53

I’ve just discovered a new video/channel on YouTube. It popped on my recommended videos list and I gave it a try as it had me at get 3600 steps and 80s music!

It was SO much fun and I clocked up 4000 steps according to my smartwatch! I often do with grow with Jo videos which I love but usually get less than the step counts she advertises. So for anyone looking to get their steps up without leaving the house in this miserable weather - this is a good one! Planning to do a similar video from the same channel after work tonight, so that’ll get me up to at least 8000 steps altogether.

@Whatsgoingonwithmyhead it could be muscle, I’ve been hovering just above and then under then back up past 11 stone. IMO it’s best not to worry about small fluctuations as scale weight can be affected by things such as the time of day you get on them or something you ate the night before .

HighlandCowRose · 23/01/2024 13:06

I didn't post yesterday, was indulging in a little self pity.

Yesterday's food

B toast with hummus
L sandwich
D peri peri fillet, with steamed veg and brown rice
S crisps, wine grapes & blueberries

Such a stupid little thing but I was quite proud of myself going for a fruit snack, I had calories left over was feeling picky and being in a bit of a grump I'd usually sabotage.

I'm trying to focus on how I feel, especially after a disappointing result on the scale. This morning I just felt good, it's a rubbish word to describe it but happy and a clearer head, just better.

I'm also aware that I can see where the weight I have lost has come off, it's all off my hips, I had developed a unpleasant hip shelf and it has reduced significantly.

2024fit walking without leaving the house you say, will give that a look.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 23/01/2024 17:06

Thanks @TheRealHousewife I was very weak and had crisps and some cake. 🙄 I could have taken my own, but it would have been a bit of a faff. If today's scales are anything to go by, I won't have a loss for tomorrow's WOW, but I am going to do a bodycombat class shortly so that will help with some of today's excess calories at least!

WeirdPookah · 23/01/2024 19:19

@2024fit I have done some walking workouts by Jenny Ford on YouTube and enjoyed them.

The weather is so dark, wet and windy. The rain is relentless. I went shopping to the next town, but done no formal exercise today.

My period turned up 8 days early FFS and it's awful. I really cannot hope enough this is the beginning of the end of this shite. I have the worst hormonal headache 3x a month at various cycle points. Just done.

B: black bean burrito
L: sardines and broccoli
D: veggie sausage, mashed swede/carrots, red cabbage, gravy
bit of marzipan, 2 small pears thanks to hormonal unbalance.

TheRealHousewife · 23/01/2024 19:27

Evening All

Sending you a big mumsy hug @ImALittlePea Life sounds tough at the moment ❤️

@WhatWouldTheDoctorDo It’s not the end of the world; don’t sweat it or worry about tomorrow. Being in a work corporate environment can make it tough to navigate food wise. You’ll be fine 👍

@HighlandCowRose Well done on not self sabotaging 👏

@Whatsgoingonwithmyhead Just keep going 👍

@afaloren Ive not seen either of those films as yet. It’s always disappointing when a film doesn’t match expectations. I’ve not been to the cinema for years, especially since Covid as I’m not brave enough 😬

Storm Jocelyn sounds like it’s arrived; it’s very stormy atm.

@WeirdPookah Sorry to read your post! Do you have a lot of pain too? Have you been investigated for endometriosis? That is so debilitating!

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 23/01/2024 19:57

Thanks @TheRealHousewife The weather is just awful isn't it. My local fb group is full of flying fences and missing bbq covers. We're expecting gusts of around 60 mph. I have a new car, that I'm desperate to take for a spin, but it's bigger than I'm used to and it's an EV, so I really don't want to try it out in a raging storm (not a very confident driver and never driven an automatic).

Sorry about your period woes @WeirdPookah I'm desperate for mine to bugger off. I went through stages of hormonal migraines, but I don't think I've had one since I started hrt.

Bodycombat class is done. It was a good calorie burner, so pleased with that.

HighlandCowRose · 23/01/2024 20:16

I've taken to keeping myself busy when I get home to prevent snacking, big plus is the house is in much better order.

B toast with hummus
L roll
D sausage, lentil & kale casserole
S crisps, wine & 1 square of chocolate

Dinner was a new receipe, delicious and very filling

Good luck to all weighing tomorrow.

afaloren · 23/01/2024 20:55

@HighlandCowRose that casserole sounds delicious, where did you find the recipe?

B - Protein yoghurt, banana
L - Plate of leftovers from the fridge
D - Smoked mackerel with green veg, protein yoghurt
S - 3 babybel lights
E - Yoga, weights at the gym, one dog walk. Would have been two but I had a row with DH and refused to go on the second one! We very rarely argue and I was upset but didn’t eat my feelings so that’s a win. We’re friends again now Smile

HighlandCowRose · 23/01/2024 21:08

afaloren it was in the free magazine you can pick up in asda. Happy to take a photo and post for you if you like.
Husband is asleep on me atm.

Well done on not eating your feelings.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 23/01/2024 21:38

Would be interested in that recipe too @HighlandCowRose

It's actually my birthday 'week' so I have treated myself to a glass of fizz. I shouldn't but life is too short to diet through birthdays!

If you have a minute to take a pic that would be ace! No rush. Thank you.

ImALittlePea · 23/01/2024 22:47

Thank you @TheRealHousewife it's much appreciated. I had some wine tonight - bit of a whoops. There's just so much going on. Hoping none of it evolves but there's a quite complex mix of various things making me feel anxious and fed up. Cuddles (real and virtual) are very much needed. We all have times where we feel a bit piled upon, I know it won't last, but I very much appreciate being in such a supportive place in the meantime ❤️

Gemstonebeach · 24/01/2024 05:50

Looking forward to weighing myself tomorrow and seeing how much I’ve lost, I find daily weighing really hard with the ups and downs.

I had a brown rice salad for lunch, with chickpeas, roast veggies and herbs. For dinner, grilled salmon fillet with steamed broccolli and beans.
