January 2024! Fresh start & develop new habits. Join-in to reset & refresh and become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

ThreeRingCircus Made your soup today for lunch, it was really nice, thank you for sharing.

imustbepatient · 21/01/2024 16:26

@WhatWouldTheDoctorDo and @FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain those were fascinating posts thank you. It really hit home about how I can think a treat day isn’t that bad, and that those are the very days I previously haven’t tracked so as to have a ‘break’, but that means I can be completely unaware of how much I’ve actually had and that it can wipe out the calorie deficit I’ve so carefully built up during the week.

I’ve been coming to this conclusion recently anyway, but your posts have smacked me round the head with it in a way that will hopefully last, and get me through future periods when I would otherwise slip.

TheRealHousewife · 21/01/2024 16:31

Afternoon All

Thank you for the well wishes ❤️

Has anyone else noticed that the nights are drawing out 😀 Thank heavens! Now all we need is a bit of sunshine ☀️

@Undisclosedlocation Thats a great NSV 👍 Well done!

Welcome to the thread @Gemstonebeach 👋

@FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain It’s surprising how items add up! After adding apple sauce and horseradish sauce my roast dinner came in around 850! I’d omitted roast potatoes and yorkshires. If I’d included those items = 1200 + Cals 😮

@LumionaMoonsplash Thats fantastic progress! Well done 👏

@Spudlover Your pizza looks tasty! 😋

@buzzofthebumblebee sorry to read about your df. Sending a hug ❤️

@WhatWouldTheDoctorDo Im still working on him 😬 That said he did prep our dinner today which I’m always grateful far as my back just can take the standing 👍

Menu
Meal 1 - Roast Pork, crackling, gf sausage stuffing, cabbage, carrots, broccoli, cauliflower, mashed potato, onion sage and thyme gravy. I chose not to have the Yorkshire pudding or roast potatoes. I didn’t miss them.

Meal 2 - Greek yoghurt and mixed berries.

Tea, black coffee and water.

I've been having the urge to binge eat rubbish today but have stuck to my plan so am feeling good 💪
I just made the Slimming World Macaroni cheese recipe to get me through the next few days.

maybein2022 · 21/01/2024 18:12

Evening all,
Sorry I’ve been very absent on here, busy! Hope everyone is doing ok?

Tonight marks 21 days 100% on track with my plan, I am so, so pleased as usually by this point in January I have had a slip up or two.

Third weigh in tomorrow, hoping for a decent loss although I do have my period which doesn’t help. Got two meals out this week so need to keep really focused.

I am also so happy that as a former hardcore Diet Coke addict, I’ve not had any at all (or similar) for the past 3 weeks.

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo · 21/01/2024 18:35

Glad it was helpful @imustbepatient

Your Sunday lunch looked lovely @TheRealHousewife

Welcome @Gemstonebeach and 👋🏻 to everyone else.

Today's log:
B - toast, scrambled egg, bacon medallions
L/D - roast chicken, roast potatoes (low cal spray, done in air gryer), steamed carrots, broccoli, Yorkshire pudding, gravy

Snack - some Scottish tablet and a slivery of birthday cakes.
Small glass of wine with lunch.

Exercise - bodycombat class. Far too wet and wild to think about leaving the house to get some steps in or get any outdoor exercise. It's horrible here, but I think it is pretty much uk wide.

ChickenChipsandBeans · 21/01/2024 19:12

So probably in June last year I went with my friend to help her choose an outfit to wear to her daughters graduation ceremony. We were in Mango, and I had a look too, but I knew that I couldn't fit in even their largest size. Couldn't get out of there fast enough... Anyway, I was with my daughter today and we went in as the sale was on. A dress I remember liking from that previous visit was there, so I tried it on. The large was too baggy so I bought it in a Medium! I love it and feel so nice in it. It was such a moment to think that I can once again go into a shop and fit into clothes. So so happy.

PatienceOfEngels · 21/01/2024 19:18

@imustbepatient totally agree!

I used to treat myself at the weekend but it meant a family pack of crisps, wine and fizzy drinks. And then since I work part time my weekend would end up being 4 nights, over half the week, and I obviously wasn't losing any weight!

I do zero alcohol which works so much better for me. I'm much less likely to make bad choices if I'm sober. And I find it easier just to say a blanket no to booze. Evenings are snack free (I'm not hungry! If I eat it's just habit or emotional). We've never really been regular pudding eaters - I'd say I only make one once every 1-2 months (usually for a birthday).

My body's adjusted now to eating 3 meals a day and fruit in the morning. Weight loss has slowed down a bit (and Christmas didn't help).

Today:

B - boiled egg and rye toast, butter, coffee
L-jacket potato with cheese, grated carrot, mayo, butter
D - meatballs in gravy, rice, peas, sweetcorn
S-dark chocolate.

PatienceOfEngels · 21/01/2024 19:21

@TheRealHousewife your roast looks delicious! I really wanted a roast today but couldn't be bothered to leave the house to buy some meat.

afaloren · 21/01/2024 19:46

Very lazy, cosy day here. DH took the dog on a long hike with FIL so I ended up having to march around the living room while we watched a film to close my rings on my watch this evening!

B - Dried apricots, protein yoghurt
L - Smoked mackerel and salad
D - Unstuffed peppers from the ‘Comfy’ cookbook. Protein yoghurt.
E - Yoga, aforementioned marching.

LemonDrizzle23 · 21/01/2024 20:04

Some lovely sounding and looking food going on this weekend!

Grotty weekend in our household 😫

DS had a horrible temperature yesterday first thing - some kind of germ that he duly passed on to us. He has of course recovered in 24hrs, but now I have a sore throat and a stinking cold, AND my period.

I have spent two days on the sofa. Eaten a load of crap. Feel like crap.

What's going to be the best way to reset tomorrow?!

WeirdPookah · 21/01/2024 20:49

I didn't exercise much this weekend, done some cleaning and sorting out, but IL's where coming today and the weather was too awful even for a walk.

Yesterday food was fine,
B: eggs, miso mushrooms, 1 slice toast
L: soup, 2 sesame rye crackers
D: german style lentils 50/50 cauli/potato mash, sauerkraut and home made piccalilli.

Today wasn't great at all. I made lasagne, but I did skip the garlic bread. I had tracked it and knew that having that with small amount of apple crumble was pretty much my days calories, but I was so hungry after taking the children to bed I have had toast with honey and almond butter, and some mandarins.

B: greek 5% yogurt, pineapple (tinned), scatter of granola
L: vegetarian lasagne, cucumber, tomato, apple crumble, low fat custard
D: toast w. flora/honey, toast w. almond butter, tin mandarins, left over crumble

Feeling guilty and annoyed really.

HighlandCowRose · 21/01/2024 21:06

ChickenChipsandBeans such a great feeling.

Been doing some organising this weekend, trying to make the kitchen more user friendly, I hate 'stuff' on the worktops.

L spicy parsnip soup with seeded bread
(Thank you ThreeRingCircus)
D veggie mince, asparagus, cabbage, carrots & gravy
S Graze, tiffin & glass of wine
E Resistance band workout

Was planning a long walk but time has flown this weekend, isn't it shit when the weekend goes so quickly

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 22/01/2024 06:32

Weigh in day for me

SW - 1st Jan - 225 lb

WC 8th Jan - 220 lb
WC 15th Jan - 217 lb
WC 22nd Jan - 216 lb

Total Loss - 9 lb

ThreeRingCircus · 22/01/2024 07:04

Glad the parsnip soup recipe went down well! 😁

I need to reset today too. So am planning just coffee, fruit and greek yoghurt today until dinner time and then I'm going to make Nigel Slater's cauliflower and parsley soup for dinner with a granary roll as we have some that need using up.

I went to a yoga class yesterday and really enjoyed it, I definitely need to get back into doing yoga videos regularly at home again. Today's exercise I'm going to walk to the post office and back (3 miles) as I have a package to post and will also do 30 mins on the exercise bike.

TheRealHousewife · 22/01/2024 08:26

Good Morning All

Any of you been affected by Storm Isha? Hope all remains safe. We only lost a hanging bird feeder, thankfully no structural damage 🤞

@FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain Fabulous progress! 9lbs 😮👏

@HighlandCowRose I agree! There are never enough hours in the day! I really admire working parents! I don’t know how they even have time to think! They are hero’s 🦸‍♀️

@WeirdPookah Please don’t feel guilty or annoyed with yourself. You went with the flow, had what you had (enjoyed at the time it I hope). Healthy eating is about balance and definitely not about deprivation. Remember that overall your healthy eating days outnumber the not so on point. Life is for living and far too short to beat yourself up over a crumble ❤️

@LemonDrizzle23 Hope you feel better soon!

@maybein2022 Congratulations on your 3 week streak! That shows commitment and will further motivate you to carry on with your healthy eating and positive lifestyle changes.👌👏 🥇

@ChickenChipsandBeans Thats a fabulous NSV. Well done! 👍👏

I’ve sprouted dried lentils and beans; they are lovely in a salad or just to munch as and when. Full of fibre, some protein & complex carbs. A couple have sprouted leaves so I’m going to plant them and see what grows 😬

Menu
Meal 1 - Vegetable Soup. Small omelette.
Meal 2 - Cold meats, bubble & squeak, fried egg. Brown sauce.

Thanks @TheRealHousewife meals sound lovely! That’s so clever with the lentils and beans too!

Happy Monday everyone. January is dragging! Weigh in today and pleased to report a 2lb loss, taking me to 12lb off in 3 weeks. Have a good day!

Whatsgoingonwithmyhead · 22/01/2024 09:09

SW 11 stone
CW 10 stone 13
Measurements around waist and hips unchanged

So a 1 lb loss since first of January despite continuing with my exercise regime & food rules. I did have 2 small slices of homemade birthday cake this weekend but otherwise have stuck to my food rules and not touched any alcohol, chocolate, ultra processed treats etc since 1 Jan. I’ve been really strict.

Exercise last week:
1x 1 hour weights session
1x 10k run
2x 5k runs
4x 1 hour Pilates classes
plus at least 10,000 steps each day

Actually in a bit of disbelief that I’m still not seeing changes. I’ve been so good.

TheRealHousewife · 22/01/2024 10:07

@Whatsgoingonwithmyhead I understand your frustration about the lack of progress you describe. There are many variables that can affect the rate of loss including but not exclusively:- age, height to weight ratio, muscle/fat ratio, health conditions, hormones, how much you have to lose, medications etc. One positive is you’ve registered a loss, albeit 1lb but that is better than a gain. How tall are you? Are you near goal? Please don’t give up! My rate of loss can stop for months, then I’ll see a few drops. I’m disabled, post meno, medicated thyroid, 5ft on a good day. It’s tough for me to lose. I've been hovering around 9st for a while fluctuating between 8st 12lbs and 9st 2lbs. In an ideal world I’d like to reach 8st 7lbs. I keep doing what I’m doing even if at times it feels like I’m treading water. Otherwise I know I’d be gaining week on week and much heavier than the 12 + stone I was at the start. You can do it ❤️

OP posts:
Whatsgoingonwithmyhead · 22/01/2024 10:17

Thanks @TheRealHousewife
I’m 5”7 so don’t have a lot to lose - would like to be around the 10 stone mark. I definitely carry too much weight at the moment and have a wobbly tummy

CumbrianExile · 22/01/2024 10:32

Morning all. Weigh in day for me.

SW 15st8
CW 15st5

Was a little disappointed as on Saturday I weighed at 15st3. But the weekend then didn't go exactly as planned. And I am averaging 1lb a week, and I know that I am a slow loser so once I had thought about it I am happy!

Keep going @Whatsgoingonwithmyhead I think you are due a woosh soon!

Hope you are feeling better @TheRealHousewife ? And feel better soon @LemonDrizzle23 .

Well done to everyone who has weighed in today!

This is normally the time I would start to falter. Especially after the weekend which involved a meal out and DH making an apple crumble. But I tracked the calories of both (even added the recipe for the crumble to nutracheck ha) and have my meal plans for the week set. I just hope this storm dies down this week so I can get out for some long walks!

HighlandCowRose · 22/01/2024 10:57

Weigh day for me too
Sw 15st 5lb
Cw 14st 12½lb
This week ½lb
Total loss 5½lb
I feel a little disappointed this morning, I usually start with reasonablely substantial losses, which slow after a couple of months, a loss is a loss but I'm pretty large and feel the cuts I'm making would have better results, the reduction in alcohol alone should be 1lb a week. I know its not an exact science but still 😒
I don't really want to cut calories back any more atm, need to give myself somewhere to go as I hopefully get smaller.

Whatsgoingonwithmyhead no advice but I feel for you, you're working so hard.

buzzofthebumblebee · 22/01/2024 11:09

Some great progress. I read every day, even though I don't post.

Unfortunately my run of no sugar / carbs / cake / crips / chocolate / alcohol run was broken yesterday. I ate an energy bar during a run, and then caved after & demolished 2 enormous bakery bakewell slices. In my defence, it was a tough 15 mile trail run - hills, mud, wind, and more hills. So damage offset with any luck. One slice would have sufficed, but like normal for me, one tiny bit of sugar and I can't stop. Back on it today.

Willing everyone well this week.

CumbrianExile · 22/01/2024 12:08

Oh wow @buzzofthebumblebee I think you deserved that treat!

I don't post often either, mainly just to check in, but I do keep reading the thread. The support is great.

TheRealHousewife · 22/01/2024 12:11

@Whatsgoingonwithmyhead what a lovely height! I bet you look good in absolutely everything with a stature like that. Your height, being near to goal and exercising explains your ‘slow’ progress. You’ll be building muscle don’t forget.

Thank you @CumbrianExile . In my opinion 1lb a week is good progress, especially if week on week. It soon adds up.

Hang in there @HighlandCowRose . I agree with not cutting back further than is comfortable. I general eat between 1000 - 1200 daily and I find (especially if have a relatively ‘active’ week for me) I lose eventually. At the start of my weight loss when I had the most to lose I did Dr Michael Mosleys Fast800. It was relatively easy and the suggested recipes were tasty enough. Although over the 12 weeks I lost the most weight, down the line I started shedding hair. Now I’m eating more I’m turning into a hairy banshee 😬

Lovely to see you pop up @buzzofthebumblebee . I’d say those pastries were well deserved after 15 mile trail run 😮 Well done! 🥇👌👍👏

I have had a menu change. Mackerel stuffed pointy red peppers. If I say so myself, very tasty! The whole plate came to 420cal, 13.6g carbs, 28.5g protein, fibre 2.1g. I’ve been meaning to increase my oily fish intake and intend to menu it in once or twice a week.
