January 2024! Fresh start & develop new habits. Join-in to reset & refresh and become a healthier version of yourself. These threads are for those who’d like to lose and those who wish to maintain whilst eating a healthy varied diet.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and eat twice a day. Im a long time healthy eater and overall I’ve lost over 3 stone. After having been on the wrong side of 12st Im now hovering around 9st. I had a blip a couple of years ago when my thyroid went wonky but now back on track.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

CW 69.6kg
Interim GW 68kg
GW 63kg

WOW -0.2kg this week. Slow progress this month but getting there. Have been trying to make healthy choices and notice the difference in my body, energy and mood when I don't. Have beeb struggling a bit with evening snacking (cheese, unsalted nuts, fruit - not the worst thing to eat but I notice the difference if I don't give my body a full 12 hours without eating, or I eat too close to bedtime).

Keeping up with YWA 30 days of yoga pretty well. Missed 2 days at the weekend and have caught up with one of those so only 1 day behind.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain · 24/01/2024 06:47

@Gemstonebeach I can't do weekly weigh ins, I don't have the patience and can't deal with the anticipation 😂 I also like being able to see the trends over a longer period of time.

I'm down 10lbs since 1st Jan as of today.

Happy Wednesday everyone.
Sending my thoughts to all those who are having difficult times.

I wasn’t expecting a huge loss this week as I did have a burger and chips along with lots of cocktails on the weekend, I also snacked on quite a few chocolate coated nuts. The nuts are gone now so the temptation has been taken away 🤣

SW: 17st 10
CW: 17st 0
TW: 10st 10

Total loss: 10lbs

ItsTapasTime · 24/01/2024 07:18

Morning.
WOW

SW 74kg 1.1.24
CW 71.8
loss this week 0.6kg
GW 63 then 61?

Slow and steady. Still doing dry January and 5:2, although usually hitting 700 ish cals rather than 500 on fast days.

MrsPepperpotty · 24/01/2024 07:33

SW: 15st 4
CW: 14st 9
GW: 11st 11
Loss this week: 2lb. I'm pleased with that Smile

Stripyunicorn · 24/01/2024 07:35

WOW
SW 13 stone 2 (1st Jan)
CW 12 stone 5.2
GW 10 stone 7
This week 0.6 lb
Total loss 10.8lb

Very small loss this week, but still a loss so I'll take it. I can tell I'm losing weight because my clothes fit better and my waist is more obvious which is good. Felt a bit bloated the last couple of days so planning on lots of water to try and flush it through.

Well done to everyone losing 👏

sprinklersplashes · 24/01/2024 07:37

Morning!
WOW

SW 13st 5
SW Jan 9st 3.5
CW 8st 8.8
TW 7st 10

Total loss this month 8.7lbs! I am thrilled, can't wait for 8 stone 5 so it can be a full 5 stone gone.

I've been awful at checking in and missed WOW last week, probably because it was a 1lb gain so I was in a strop.

Hope you are all doing well!

ThreeRingCircus · 24/01/2024 07:41

Morning all, only another 1lb off this week. Heading in the right direction though.

SW: 15st 1lb
CW: 14st 6lb
GW: 11st

Total loss 9lbs

Today's plan:

B - coffee and berries
L - vegetable soup
D - butternut squash and sage risotto

ImALittlePea · 24/01/2024 08:00

Well done everyone who has WoWed so far! I'm considering not weighing on Friday after a few bad choices; if I don't, I'll weigh next Wednesday for an end if month reckoning.

I feel quite un-slumped this morning! Huzzah! Feeling more upbeat, ready to tackle all the niggles that need dealing with, and focusing on making healthier choices.

Plan is:
Lunch - 1/2 carton of chicken and veg soup
Dinner - risotto (the pepper I bought yesterday was rotten inside and I was in a mood so we ended up having a frozen pizza (half each) and some homemade chips)

HighlandCowRose · 24/01/2024 08:46

WhatWouldTheDoctorDo & afaloren
Ended up having an early night last night, hope it reads OK as a photo.
The receipe is for vegan sausages but obviously can swap our for meat ones or chicken breast etc
I don't think the photo in the magazine actually belongs to the dish because there's large white beans in the image and I can't see any lentils, but hey-ho.

ImALittlePea hope you're doing ok

PatienceOfEngels I've always found myself eating as little as possible in the day to save calories for evening snaking, but I'm trying to change the mindset, don't want to eat so much so close to bedtime

ThreeRingCircus if you felt like sharing the butternut squash risotto receipe, that would be fab, sounds lovely.

Well done on all the losses.

EndlessGuineaPigCycle · 24/01/2024 09:03

Morning all!

0.6kg loss this week, which all seemed to miraculously come off overnight, the scales weren't budging, and even went up at one point over the week, despite my efforts.

Wow
SW 81.2kg
CW 77.1kg
1st mini goal 77kg
TW 73kg

My plan for the week is to up my exercise even more, drink lots of water, focus on protein and try and limit carbs a bit more.

Kazziek · 24/01/2024 09:29

Happy Wednesday all!

SW 86.5kg
CW 85.9
GW 82.0

Happy considering I went out for a curry and drinks!

Need to do better this week though. Only a few weeks before I go on holiday and I need to fit into some clothe!

Well done all!

buzzofthebumblebee · 24/01/2024 09:34

I've had a miraculous overnight loss too, of 1.5lbs.

SW 12 st 0
CW 11 st 9
GW 11 st 2

I need to keep portion sizes down. Yesterday I limited my food quite a bit (for me) - so one cajun chicken mini fillet and 1/2 jacket potato at dinner with broccoli. If I'd eaten rest of my chicken and potato, I don't think I'd see that loss.

Well done to other losers. Keep on going.

TheRealHousewife · 24/01/2024 09:43

Good Morning All

WOW - Ive lost 4lbs so far this month (I’ve started using Nutra Check this January) Weighing in at 9st 2lbs. 6lbs to lose to reach my ‘first’ goal of 8st 10lbs which would give me a BMI of 24. I did actually reach this weight last year; however pain meds, inactivity and the festive season put paid to that 😬 Ultimately I’d like to reach 8st 7lbs and a BMI of 23. From my heaviest weight of around 175lbs in 2017 I’ve lost 47lbs. That said I am the slowest of losers due to a multiple factors and I’m the living proof if I can lose absolutely anyone can.

@HighlandCowRose Great strategy! Keeping busy is a great idea to prevent mindless snacking 👍

@ImALittlePea Sometimes you need to do what you need to do; anything to get you through ❤️

@PatienceOfEngels A loss is a loss. Well done 👍

@FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain rubs thighs (reeves & mortimer style) I loves a graph and what a beautiful graph you have 😍. Well done! 👏

@Flowerchild547 Fabulous progress! Congrats 🥳

@ItsTapasTime Great progress! I agree that upping your cals on nutritious foods on fast days will have positive benefit overall. Less likely to fall of the wagon!

@sprinklersplashes Absolutely well done. Fabulous January result of 8.7lbs loss so far! 👏👍

@MrsPepperpotty @Stripyunicorn @ThreeRingCircus @EndlessGuineaPigCycle @Kazziek @buzzofthebumblebee Well done on your losses. Every bit helps 👍

Menu
Meal 1 - Vegetable Soup. Greek yoghurt & Cashew nuts.
Meal 2 - Chicken tray bake.

I've had a 1.1kg overnight gain so I'm waiting until I see a number I agree with😒

LemonDrizzle23 · 24/01/2024 10:03

Ooh, loving the graphs! 📉

Well done on all the losses this week. I've stayed the same this week, which is probably fair enough, as I've been sitting on the couch full time since Saturday morning.

DS was over his germs in 24hrs, and I'm going to be stuck with them for a week I'm guessing 🤦🏼‍♀️

My plan is to rest this week and hopefully be back at the pool next week.

ThreeRingCircus · 24/01/2024 10:06

@HighlandCowRose I don't have a recipe as such for the risotto. I tend to roast chunks of butternut squash with salt, pepper and plenty of dried sage in the oven first (or the air fryer in my case). Then make a risotto as normal frying garlic and onions, adding the arborio rice, vermouth or white wine (I also add a tablespoon of soy sauce) and stock and once cooked adding the sage butternut squash and stirring everything through. Check for seasoning and add salt/pepper/more dried sage if needed.

Normally for a risotto I'd add a knob of butter and some parmesan at the end of cooking and mix everything together. I'm going to just add some cottage cheese today though as a lighter option....we shall see if it works!

I tend to make my risottos in the instant pot as it is so easy. You just fry the garlic, onion, vermouth etc, add the soy sauce and rice and stock and set to high pressure for five mins. Then release the steam and it's done. I'll be doing that option tonight as I just find it easier with young DDs running around to set the instant pot and forget about it while everything cooks. But there's something nice about standing and stirring a risotto in a pan on the hob too.

TheRealHousewife · 24/01/2024 10:06

@ChickenChipsandBeans I understand your frustration. Weight loss isnt linear (unfortunately). Try to look at your overall progress over the past week/month/year. If the trajectory is downwards then you are winning 👍 PS give the scales a talking too, the f cheek of some electronics 👿

TheRealHousewife

How are you finding nutracheck.
I've used it (when dieting) for years and think it's the best tracker. The database is excellent and always up to date with new products

ThreeRingCircus thank you for typing that out, very much appreciated, will definitely be making this.

FlabMonsterIsDietingAgain

Great graph
Looking forward to having a good run and a graph to see my progress

afaloren · 24/01/2024 10:24

Thank you @HighlandCowRose !

Newname2308 · 24/01/2024 10:43

SW 70kg
23/1 62.8kg
TW 60 then 56 kg
Waist stubbornly remaining at 31”

Have been ill, so didn’t drink any alcohol at all on my ‘allowed days’ Fri/Sat. That probably helped drop the 0.8 since 17/1 👍

TheRealHousewife · 24/01/2024 11:08

@HighlandCowRose I absolutely love it! I never thought I’d come away from MFP after 7 years, as I had loads of my own recipes loaded on its platform but NC has enticed me away (after seeing loads of recs on this thread) I love the graphics, the visuals and the on screen widget. It’s simply perfect! Years ago when I started my weight loss I did try it but it wouldn’t allow me to set cals to a daily target of 1000. It’s pre set to a low of 1200 which I can work with and I land between 100-1200 daily.

@Newname2308 Congratulations on your loss to date! 👏 Waists, especially as we get older (I’m talking about me not you 😬) are tough to reduce. Experts now say ideally waists will be less than half of your height. As I’m a titchy 5ft (60 inches) my waist should be under 30 inches and it was last year for a spell. However after illness and a gain it’s back around 32. Apart from my boobs it’s the only area that I can see that is carrying extra weight. Currently I’m reading around insulin sensitivity, blood glucose levels and carb/sugar intake. Thicker waists and trouble moving fat from that area, when everywhere else is losing weight can be one of the signs of insulin insensitivity. I’m not totally low carb but I have definitely reduced them. I was heading towards pre-diabetes/diabetes and wanted to get on top of my numbers. My waist is reducing again.

WOW

SW (June 2023) - 93kg
First Goal - 72kg (achieved Christmas 2023)
CW - 69.8kg
GW - 55kg

Another teeny loss for me this week, 0.2kg. Think I'm heading for another plateau. In my head I needed to 'diet' for a year to lose 6st so I'll just plod on. More clothes are fitting me and I will only be overweight in Spring so I'm happy.

Well done to everyone who's still going, it's tricky in winter.

WeirdPookah · 24/01/2024 12:34

@TheRealHousewife @WhatWouldTheDoctorDo I don't think at all it's endometriosis, it's just awful hormonal migraines. I used to get them, then had my first, no headaches at ALL for 9 months, very rarely afterwards either. Then I had a headache for nearly solid 4 months of my second pregnancy, I even had neurological testing done just in case. Nope, just hormones. And ever since I get one at ovulation, start of period, and just to salt the wound, the end of my period. So bad they make me vomit sometimes. No painkillers touch them much. The last few months my period suddenly got heavier and dates messing about. I seriously hope at 44 this is things winding up and they get a move on!

Well done on persevering through January (still another Monday to go!) and on those losses! I'm weighing Friday as my usual, to keep my weekend accountable.

Batch cooked bulger wheat/quinoa to freeze in portions, been for a walk. It's still too bloody windy. All our front bay windows look like frosted glass with the amount of salt crusted on them.

B: kidney bean burrito
L: cabbage, mange tout, kimchi, smoked tofu
D: german style lentils and sausage, 50/50 cauli/potato mash, sauerkraut
2 small pears for snack.
