Fresh new month, fresh new start, fresh new habits. Jump right into July! Reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself! It’s going to be a Sizzling Summer!

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating to LOSE or MAINTAIN. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have a WOW (Weigh On Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable). It’s a journey, not a destination.

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fast and generally eat twice a day.

Are you in?😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why? You can do it, if you really want too!

@GonnaGetGoingReturns protein is better than low calorie carb. SpecialK probably doesn’t even have much fiber.
protein during weight loss will help preserve your muscles and will keep you feeling full longer.

So what do I do if I'd like to keep the blueberries, have it with yogurt and granola like I did before or something else? Maybe I should just have the blueberries as a snack?

I do like scrambled eggs on toast. I also sometimes have egg mayo (home made) sandwiches and also egg in salads and omelettes.

Last nights dinner was bean meal with rice and small bit of avocado and cheese and yogurt (went to mum's after work).

Have been eating almost a whole pack of Thai Sweet Chilli Rice Crackers over past week, apparently 106 calories per column so approx 400 calories for whole pack.

Breakfast: special K with blueberries and skimmed milk
Snack: Dried fruits and mixed seeds flapjack (at work), will also have 2 x apricots and maybe 1 peach
Lunch - 1 x sunflower seed rye bread and 1 Ryvita Crackerwheat with cottage cheese, 4 x cherry tomatoes, cucumber crudites and green pepper slices (latter are really yummy).
Dinner: unsure yet.

My left foot is really hurting re Plantar Fasciitis which doesn't help but did 20 minute walk to work today. Back also killing too.

@SanFranBear Happy birthday! Have at least a bit of Cake and maybe some Wine or Gin or whatever else you fancy! Smile

@BlueSilver23 - I agree with @TheRealHousewife 800 calories per day really isn't realistic to stick to at all and no wonder you fell off the wagon! @TheRealHousewife and others here really do have good eating/diet advice. You really don't want to be hungry and then thinking of ways to keep busy to stave off hunger. Do remember though that you often mistake thirst for hunger, so drink water or even add cordial to water if that helps with taste.

CrimsonAlligator · 22/07/2022 13:20

@GonnaGetGoingReturns I read an interesting book about that last year, called something like Why calories don’t count. It turns out that in spite of what the title says, calories absolutely matter. Weightloss wise, there’s not actually much difference at all between the amount of weight people lose on say a 1400 calorie diet that’s high in carbs vs one that is high in protein. What is likely to be different though is how people experience those diets.

If you eat 1400 calories of white bread, cereals, sugary drinks etc, you’re likely to feel pretty hungry. If you eat 1400 calories of mainly protein, you won’t feel as hungry and the diet probably feels more sustainable.

That’s why people say things like eggs are better for weightloss. They’re not saying that if you eat an egg, you’ll lose weight (or at least I hope they’re not!). They’re saying it will keep you full for longer, won’t make you snack as much etc and that in turn may help you lose weight.

I’d say that if you enjoy your cereal & blueberries and find that that keeps you full until lunchtime, I wouldn’t worry too much about whether there’s a “better” alternative available. I know that’s a little bit controversial, as carbs are considered the enemy by some. I don’t subscribe to that view. For me it’s about balance and eating in a way that you enjoy and that works for you 🙂

D- lemon sole in breadcrumbs and salad

@Benjispruce4 - can I just ask? seeing your breakfast menu for today - do you find that bran flakes not fill you up as much or do they?

@CrimsonAlligator (I love that username by the way as I love crimson, but I also love alligators and crocodiles, weird I know!) - I've just seen that yogurt is a protein, so I think I will go back to that with the granola and blueberries. The book you mention sounds interesting and makes sense too. I think before why I restarted with the Special K was I found some in the cupboard from a year ago and thought why not? But they don't keep me full - mid morning at work my stomach is grumbling!

It's why not many people stick to salads/fruit etc diets. I've mentioned here before, I always have a small carb serving with most meals (even lunch), and even my breakfast has it. I also don't believe in completely cutting out e.g. the odd bit of alcohol/chocolate/crisps - in moderation it's fine. I'd rather do that, than what I did before (and do have a tendency to do now) which is binge completely!

On a side note - I saw my DM yesterday who's a very healthy 81 year old! She told me that as she's getting a tummy (she's 9 stone and 5 ft 6) she's cutting out toast and apricot jam (2 slices at lunch) and reducing Breakfast Bars and said she's bought some Ryvita Crackerwheat (which I have) and likes the fact you can have it with e.g. butter/margarine and cheese.

Benjispruce4 · 22/07/2022 17:22

Hi @GonnaGetGoingReturns tbh I rarely eat them. I’ve just broken up from school so was up later and just fancied them. No they don’t fill me up as much as my usual egg, porridge or avo toast. But I had a work end of term buffet yesterday and the bran…. did it’s job! Soz! 😳

Benjispruce4 · 22/07/2022 17:24

@GonnaGetGoingReturns my DM would be 81 now if she was still with us. She was always a slim 10/12 and her go-to to ‘slim’ would be Ryvita to cut out bread. You stick with what you know. I like them especially the new ones you can get like the seeded variety. Pumpkin seed ones are 50 cals each.

fallfallfall · 22/07/2022 18:43

@GonnaGetGoingReturns may i recommend cottage cheese vs yogurt. more protein less calories lovely with blueberries and oats.

CrimsonAlligator · 22/07/2022 19:54

If it doesn’t keep you full, it makes sense to look for something else @GonnaGetGoingReturns . As well as the cottage cheese suggested by @fallfallfall, it may be worth having a look at Skyr yoghurt. 16 grams of protein in a single serving for not a lot of calories.

@TheRealHousewife I’m not sure what price range you’re looking at, but ProteinWorks currently have a sale on. I’ve found their protein powders pretty good and they do unflavoured ones as well. This is the one I’ve tried, but they do non vegan ones as well

fallfallfall · 22/07/2022 22:34

b: blueberry spinach smoothy (calculated by grams so i was able to measure out 250 calories worth)
l: egg salad made with greek yogurt and served inside a half bell pepper with carrot sticks
d: will be ongoing indian take out with some "stuff" added in such as cauliflower in the saag, and roasted eggplant in the chana masala, i'll shred some pork and add it into my dh insanely spicy chicken dish. small amounts of each will be the key.
meanwhile i made my raspberry jam and did not lick the bowls and spoons to an insanely embarrassing level...i did taste test and check if it set.
i'm still planning no doing up 2 jars of mint jelly (or 4 and give 2 away??) but that will be it for a couple months till i do up another half dozen jars of grape jelly.

BlueSilver23 · 23/07/2022 10:18

@TheRealHousewife I probably didn’t phrase that very well! I felt fine on the 800 cals, in fact I felt better than I had in long time and it was plenty for me to feel satiated. My issue is not the eating part of it, but the fact that I fall off the wagon and binge on stuff I didn’t even want if I don’t see weight loss. It doesn’t help that I live with someone who has a binging and weight issue and often encourages me to join in. I had a takeaway I didn’t even want last night as they ordered it even though I said I didn’t want it.

I went against my better judgement and weighed myself when it had only been a few days since the last time. I won’t be doing that again! And my clothes do feel looser regardless. So I think back on the wagon and no more weighing very much for me!

BlueSilver23 · 23/07/2022 10:50

I should prob clarify that I’m not intending on living on 800 cals for long. It’s more kickstart thing for a month or so. But I’ve always been someone who prefers having one larger meal than lots of little ones so it’s sustainable for me. I can’t do breakfast at all without feeling sick!

SanFranBear · 23/07/2022 14:59

About to head off to a field for a few days so will likely check back in once I'm back. Lots of bbq's on the schedule and Becks was on special in Lidl. Camping us basically the only time I drink beer (more of a voddy/cider/red wine kind of woman) but I do love a nice cold one once the tent is up... well, cold might be pushing it in the heat but what ya going to do!

Have a great few days, stay healthy & hydrated ❤️

fallfallfall · 23/07/2022 15:01

Have fun @SanFranBear!

Benjispruce4 · 23/07/2022 17:04

B- half avo on seedy toast
L- salad with two sweet potato pakoras, apple
D- out for dinner so will see.

fallfallfall · 23/07/2022 18:49

Last night I put together Jamie Oliver Best Bircher. It’s was a huge success!
I highly recommend it. I did the math and it was 1.1 calories per gram wt. SO I had a big 200gm bowl and dh had 400gm. Nice flavor and tons of fiber. I was really surprised the milk didn’t curdle.

Benjispruce4 · 23/07/2022 22:38

Is that with grated apple @fallfallfall ? I make that. It’s very refreshing as a summer breakfast.

fallfallfall · 23/07/2022 23:06

yes @Benjispruce4 , grated apple, pear then the juice of one orange. followed with the oats. the banana, milk, and cocoa are blended then added in. hence my surprise the milk didn't curdle from the orange juice. last chopped up dates. it sits overnight.

TheRealHousewife · 24/07/2022 07:55

@BlueSilver23 Apologies if I misunderstood your previous posts.

@fallfallfall oh that’s a different recipe to the one I make. Mine is from a good few years ago. Basically just oats, grated apple and milk OR apple juice and some optional nuts I think. Leave overnight in the fridge.

Mummytogg · 24/07/2022 08:59

Hi everyone I would love to join!

I weighted this morning at 11st 9.5lb. I had a baby 10months ago lost the 20lb baby and another 15lb on top but with an international move the scales have stayed the same the last couple of months.

I am still breastfeeding so will go back to my plan of real foods, cut out the processed stuff and exercise.

First goal to get to 11st. Then 10st. I'm just under 5ft4 so thinking I want to aim somewhere in the 9s but that seems too far off at the moment!

Breakfast this morning was leftover potato, scrambled eggs and raw bell peppers on the side!

TheRealHousewife · 24/07/2022 10:00

Welcome to the thread @Mummytogg and congratulations on your baby! I agree about breaking down your long term target into smaller achievable goals! Each milestone will help in keeping you motivated.

Hi all,
I’d love to join!
I’m currently trying to lose weight after I sustained an injury last spring causing me to gain around 3 stone.
I weighed myself back in April and I was 198lbs and my BMI was 29.7 the thought of it hitting 30 scared me so I started to try and lose weight. I’ve had serious exams, 4 weeks of revision, a new medication, a bereavement amongst other things since I started and most recently COVID (which has given me a resting HR of 108 up from 70 :() but I’m hoping to keep going with the weight loss.

I’m currently 181lb so that’s 17lb down in 14 weeks, not great but also not terrible all things considered. My BMI is currently 27.5. I hit the healthy weight range at 164lb. I would love to get to 10 stone eventually though.

I have a holiday booked in just under 8 weeks and it would be amazing if I could be healthy weight by then. I was on track until COVID finally got me and it’s messed my HR up hugely.
