HAPPY NEW YEAR 2022 🍾 🎊 🎉 🍾

Fresh new year, fresh new start, fresh new habits. Jump right in to reset & refresh to become a healthier version of yourself.

As no one size fits all, members need to follow their own way of eating. This thread aims to offer guidance, support and a bit of hand holding.

We generally have WOW (weigh on Wednesday) day each week. However post and share your progress as often or as little as you prefer. Do what works for you.

The important thing is not to think of it as a diet (based on deprivation and unsustainable) but more a way of life (sustainable & enjoyable).

I calorie count based on a lower carb Mediterranean diet. I intermittent fasting and eat twice a day.

Are you in😊 What food plan will you be following? What do you want to change and why?

I think I'm going to try 16:8 too with an eating window of 12pm to 8pm. I think that way for me it keeps things really simple to start with without too many rules to follow if that makes sense?

Only exercise today has been walking. Did a quick walk with DDs this morning and was only out about 25mins but have just gone to IKEA and seem to have walked miles as I was in there for 2.5 hours (and successfully avoided going to the café for meatballs.)

chickaletta2022 · 01/01/2022 21:37

I weighed myself today and am starting at 13 stone 7lb. Hoping to lose at least 2 stone by the end of the year. I'm planning on exercising for at 30mins a day and trying to eat healthier. Im only going to weigh myself once a month. Does anyone know any nice salad/vegetables recipes?

CrystalDeCanter · 01/01/2022 21:43

Hi all

Thank you for the warm welcome @TheRealHousewife, and well done everyone on successfully reaching day 2 (I'm in Aus so already Jan 2 here).

The walking app I am using is imaginatively called 'Walking for Weight Loss'. TBH Strava is probably better, but this is easy to navigate and pops up with a reminder every day.

I also have a enthusiastic dog who is delighted with my re-commitment to exercise although he I think he is a bit embarrassed to be seen with me when I'm huffing and puffing my way up hills with him.

It's a sunny Sunday here and I leapt excitedly out of bed and onto the scales to find I am 1kg heavier this morning than last Sunday which is actually bullshit. So am definitely going to have to be a bit more hardcore with my eating. I am doing 16:8 but may have been a bit over indulgent during the 8.

I started watching a Michael Mosely show last night, about how unhealthy all us Aussies are and am considering doing his Fast 800 - is anyone doing it? Is the App worth the $$$?

buzzofthebumblebee · 01/01/2022 22:05

Hi @CrystalDeCanter I'm broadly following MM Fast800 - I think he talks a lot of sense. But as I said upthread, 800 isn't enough. So for me, an extra 500 cal meal or increased portion size to up calories to 1300-1500 works, with exercise on top. I've lost over 10kg / 23 lbs since 1st Sept following this. Good luck!

CrystalDeCanter · 01/01/2022 22:08

. . . . also just putting this here . . .

  1. I want to lose weight so I don't have to roll myself off the sofa like a turtle stuck on it's back when I've been lying down.
  1. I want to lose weight so my RA improves (big shout out to everyone doing this with a chronic disease - go us!).
  1. I want to not feel like a fat middle aged frump next to my irritatingly fit and young looking dh.
  1. I want to lose weight so I can fit into my lovely clothes instead of having my irritatingly fit and lovely daughters pinch all the good ones.
  1. I work with two 21 year olds so I want to lose weight so I don't feel like the fat boring 'mum' of the office.

Will add more as they come to me. Please feel welcome to add your own. Grin

CrystalDeCanter · 01/01/2022 22:11

@buzzofthebumblebee thank you - do you have the book or do you follow the 12 week app plan?

A 10kg loss is amazing - well done! Do you feel fantastic?

2022weightlossusername · 01/01/2022 22:58

@CrystalDeCanter love your list.

I want to lose weight so my face doesn’t look like a pale white beach ball.

TheRealHousewife · 01/01/2022 22:58

Evening All

@SunshineCake1 I got to goal quite few months ago but during a rough patch of illness, meds and taking eye of ball I put quite a bit. I’m about 7- 10lbs of goal but keep losing then going the same few lbs. So in answer to your post I suppose I am maintains 😬. Aiming to lose 7lbs or so this year 🤞

@2022Bride welcome … but I thought you already had joined 😬. Nonetheless pleased you’ve decided to join our posse.

@hopingforabrighterfuture2021 impressive step count 👍👏

@2022success you’re welcome. In regards to vit d I take a supplement as we don’t get much Sun. In recent blood tests my VitD was off the scale so supplements defo work 👍 There is also some data that suggests VitD is very beneficial in regards to recovering from covid or rather those who are lacking appear to have much more illness.

@buzzofthebumblebee I’m blushing but thank you. I don’t think I’ve ever been called amazing 🥲 pleased you’re out of isolation! You’re another lady hitting the magnificent 50 this year 🎉

@Purplepeopleeaterz sounds like you’ve outlined your plan👍

@cherrytree63 which pain killers are you on. Mine have the opposite effect to yours 😳. Be careful to not hurt yourself more, that could set you back in the long term if your working out with an injury… I’m not being bossy, just showing concern.

@chickaletta2022 I’ll look for some links of recipes for you tomorrow… bit sleepy now 🥱👍

@CrystalDeCanter thank you for the app logo 👍 love you hit list! Michael Mosley has some great recipes! The hard core Fast800 is tough but there are other flexible plans. I’ve posted links up thread.

Day 1 Activity
Completed 25 minutes walk around local area. More like an amble. My momentum is so slow my Apple Watch only registered 4 minutes but I’m counting all the 25 minutes because that’s how long I was walking for. My steps overall for the day are just over 5000 steps which for me is good 😊

This post has taken so long to write I’m sure I’ve cross posted. Chat tomorrow.

@TheRealHousewife I take Maloxicam, not quite as effective as my old Naproxen, but slightly gentler on my stomach.
Also Diazapam for when my back is really bad.
I can't take codeine or tramadol as I hallucinate on them. I've tried Gabapentin and Pregabalin before, brilliant pain relief but the side effects were horrendous, terrible dizziness and once passed out in the street.
I have arthritis in my lower back and both hips, advice is to keep active, but it's hard to be active when you're in pain!

Akitamum · 02/01/2022 00:35

Thank you for the warm welcome and good advice @TheRealHousewife Smile Lots of lovely people on this thread, I'm sure it's going to help. I am walking more as I have a six month old pup, though frustratingly she is a little slow! Hopefully she speeds up as she gets older. Also going to start weight training, think building muscle will be beneficial. Getting lots of ideas and motivation from other people's posts, thinking 16:8 might be helpful. Back to work on Wednesday so making small changes now and will go all in then.

goodjoujou · 02/01/2022 06:45

Thanks @TheRealHousewife I am determined to be as disciplined as I was a few years back! These dark post Xmas months are the perfect time to work on ourselves so we can all emerge in spring as strong and beautiful butterflies Grin. Yesterday was a good day-managed no alcohol and a workout. Accidentally fell on a piece of chocolate at the end of the day though!

For those with tummies to work on, I have always found Keira LaShaes’s dancing abs workouts on YouTube fantastic at slimming down the middle section if you do them a few times a week. I use the post partum routine even though I’m not!
She is really fun and motivating too.

swampytiggaa · 02/01/2022 08:06

Morning everyone! Yesterday was ok 😊 did parkrun for my exercise and read which was my me time plus I did some knitting whilst watching a film so kept off my phone so that was also a win 😁

I got my 16 hour fast in broke it with egg on toast at 1:30pm. Evening meal was bean chilli followed by Christmas pudding and clotted cream 😋

I had a mince pie and some chocolate and crisps as snacks during the day then started my next fast at 5:30pm. Planning on not eating before lunchtime.

Improved on my water intake so I’m pleased with that.

Still in bed considering a short run 😊

FireworkParrot · 02/01/2022 08:16

Well yesterday I totally binged and felt absolutely awful. I was ok during the day but then after my evening meal had almost half of a chocolate orange and shared a big bag of crisps with DH. I just don't seem to be able to stop myself sometimes so I'm starting 16:8 today as a first step just being really strict about my eating window. Currently having a black coffee which I'm sure I'll get used to.

I've also braved the scales and am 14st 4lbs. So I have a long way to go but know where I'm starting from. I never want to see that number on the scales again.

SunshineCake1 · 02/01/2022 08:16

Morning all

Envious of your chance to run @swampytiggaa but I think I might try tomorrow. I don't see why I have to wait two weeks and as I'm not bleeding, even less so as she said not while bleeding. I will promise to take it very slowly though and it all depends on how today goes. I have admin bits to do but tbh I have had a bit of a OMG moment re personal stuff so would benefit from the mental health and space benefits that running gives me.

SunshineCake1 · 02/01/2022 08:18

@FireworkParrot

Don't fret. The food was eaten, hopefully enjoyed but use the memory of how you felt after to try and not repeat it. It's just food. You needed or wanted it then. Move on.

I was 14 stone two and a bit years ago. I have gone down and up and down and up over and over but never saw 14 or 13 again. You can do this.

swampytiggaa · 02/01/2022 08:55

Back from my run 😊 24 minutes and 2 miles done with walking bits at the start and end to warm up and cool down 😊

Time for my shower now!

twinkydink · 02/01/2022 09:00

@SunshineCake1 your post really struck a chord. I would live to never see 12 or 13 again after this year with a starting weight of 13st 9.

I would usually have had about 400 calories by now so I'm definitely feeling like I have the self control to do this and reading posts like yours are really motivational so thank you!

Crazzzycat · 02/01/2022 09:31

Morning all! I had a good start yesterday exercise wise, but was a lot less successful when it came to food. There was just too much nice stuff left over from New Year’s Eve. Anyway, I won’t be fretting over that. It’s all gone now, so I can get back to eating better.

I’ll be making a big pot of carrot, lentil, cauliflower and parsnip soup later today. That should keep me supplied with healthy, filling lunches for most of this week. Not sure about dinner yet 🤔

goodgodlemon · 02/01/2022 09:43

Morning all. Joining this group as nearly jumped off the scales this morning in shock having put on 10 lbs since the beginning of December! I knew I had put on weight but thought it would be a few pounds at the most :( So going to limit calories and up my steps and see how I get on. Will try to cut out sugar too. Am the wrong side of 50 so know this will be a hard slog. Have a wedding in March so really want to lose 20 lbs by then and get down to 12 stone. Will be weighing daily and checking in here for support and top tips! Here goes!

TheRealHousewife · 02/01/2022 10:00

Good Morning All

@cherrytree63 yes I’ve tried all those and stopped for similar reasons. I agree the gaba & preg were horrendous. Tramadol was great initially but but quite quickly needed more and more so weaned myself off. Occasional have codeine/paracetamol combo but it totally bungs me up 😳 and I hold water weight. A couple of years ago I started having significant stomach bleeds. Last one about 18 months ago. Gastrologist strongly suggested not taking anything unless really desperate as my next bleed could prove fatal 😔. I’m going to explore Maloxicam as you mention it’s gentler on your stomach. Thank you 🙏
Even gentle exercise causes me more pain but I think being outside (when possible) makes it worthwhile iyswim.

@Akitamum you’re welcome. Yes all the posters we have this month are making it one of the best ever! You’re all great! 👍 Walking is so beneficial if you can fit it in 🚶 Adding weights will be the cherry on top!

@goodjoujou thank you for sharing the dancing link.

@swampytiggaa sounds like you had a totally to plan day. Well done on getting your run in early 👍

@FireworkParrot Yesterdays done with now. Focus on today and all the healthy choices you’re got 😉 Don’t be hard on yourself, we’ve all done the same at some point, it’s part of being human.

@Crazzzycat love your pragmatic approach, cool! Soup sounds tasty and that food prep will defo aid in sticking to plan!

Just about to go to cemetery to pay our respects to our lost loved ones ❤️ Then we are going for a walk in the countryside so will get in my 20:22 minutes exercise 👍

Menu

Meal 1 - Lamb cold cuts and veg
Meal 2 - King prawn stir fry
Tea, coffee, water, few nuts. Apple/cream cheese if still hungry.

Have a great day (probably cross posted)

Thank you @TheRealHousewife and you are doing well with the walking! I’m about to watch some tv with my knitting whilst the husband sleeps his night shift off 😊 enjoying a rare Sunday off here!

DontWantTheRivalry · 02/01/2022 10:32

Can I join please??

In the past I’ve always promised myself I’m going to be “be good” (whatever that entails) and lose weight but my good intentions always come to nothing Sad

9 months ago I started some medication for a chronic condition I have and although the medication is doing it’s job, a documented side effect is weight gain, and I have put another stone on.

I hate looking at myself in the mirror and my low confidence is affecting my sex life with my husband.

The real low point was when over Christmas lunch, my mum said in front of 14 people: “I saw Paul the other day (a mutual family friend) and he asked me if you were pregnant because of how much weight you’ve put on.”

The tears started immediately and I had to walk away from the room. I was so upset and so humiliated.

However, it’s made me realise that I really do need to do something to address my weight gain. I know it’s been creeping on but I’ve had my head in the sand but my mum’s very public comment stung deep and the time has come for me to do something about it.

My weak spot is chocolate, snacking, going to the Chippy and enjoying pizza. I don’t really do any exercise and that’s going to change too.

Addressing my weight is my NY resolution and I have already got through Day 1 (yesterday) of no unhealthy foods so I just have to keep going, one day at a time and see how things go.

FireworkParrot · 02/01/2022 11:09

Thank you @SunshineCake1 and @TheRealHousewife for the encouragement. I agree that your posts are motivational and I think I can put on here what I'm too scared to admit or say out loud in real life if that makes sense?

@DontWantTheRivalry that is a horrible thing of your mum to say, especially in front of other people. Sometimes these moments do give us a wake up call, I got mine the other day when I was getting out of the bath and DD1 said "Mummy, you're really fat." It stung because I know she is right and I don't want that to be the way she sees me. The difference is she's 4 and just says what she sees, your mum is old enough to know better.

2022success · 02/01/2022 11:32

@DontWantTheRivalry that was horrible of your mother. I wouldn't tell her you are addressing your weight gain, she sounds like the type to use it against you.

Chronic pain twinnies - I ended up with stomach ulcers after years on diclofenac ( I have hypermobility) and now take 30/500 co codamol without any real impact on my digestive system. I do find that the additional weight I have been carrying increases my pain. Sad

So - bizzarrely, I was 12:12 yesterday and am 12:9 this morning. Same time of day, naked, before morning cuppa. Obviously one day of under 1000 calories hasn't caused me to lose three pounds of fat, so I won't be crying if it comes back tomorrow, but it was positive to see that on the scale Smile

I have found Lucy Wyndham-Read you tube channel and as well as my walk today, am planning to do her 7 minute HIIT.

Meal plan for today is porridge in a minute, then fish cakes and salad for dinner, early night again. No alcohol.

twinkydink · 02/01/2022 11:32

@DontWantTheRivalry I'm so sorry that happened, that was a really unkind comment. Don't beat yourself up, your medication has impacted you as well. I'm no expert but I would say don't cut put everything you like as it's so hard to stay on track that way because you'll just crave it all!

Best of luck, I think there's a really supportive group here!
