Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 3

We’ve chatted as much as we (used to) eat! New shiny thread for more support.

General principles:

No sugar
No wheat
No processed foods
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

Everything else is fair game!

This is on offer this weekend at Lidl, 99p a bottle I think. Goes up on to £1.39 tomorrow which I don't think is too bad really.

Gosh, that's cheap, great find wewant. No Lidl by me, I used to love a wonder round when I worked near one

NowYouListenToMeFella · 04/07/2021 13:30

Stupid phone. Shite not shots in previous post. I'm not necking shots on a daily basis.

I know! I bought 2 bottles but kind of wish I had got a couple more!!
OhMyChrist2020 · 04/07/2021 14:10

Help, I completely lost my way and then decided I needed to do a couple of weeks of low calorie to get rid of a few lbs, but I know that’s madness!
It’s been really helpful to catch up on this thread and I’m back on board. I’ve had a broccoli and cheese frittata for lunch and have planned dinners for the week 😇
I have struggled with trying to stick rigidly to ‘the rules’ and then jacked it all in when I’ve deviated so instead I’m going to plan my meals around the guidelines and try not to stress about the odd off-plan extra here and there.

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 04/07/2021 14:21

@OhMyChrist2020 I think you can do both.

By cutting out bread and UPF I find I eat fewer calories naturally. I am logging at the moment on MFP and can follow easily and it's been natural low calories. I always eat full fat everything anyway and I don't snack now unless I'm desperate so that cuts calories too

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 04/07/2021 14:28

I had my second vaccine this morning and it's left me feeling horribly nauseous. All ive wanted is toast, so ive had it and will get back on track as soon as I stop feeling so sick.

What's weird is that I don't feel like ive "blown it" by doing this. It's fine.

Aria999 · 04/07/2021 14:28

@OhMyChrist2020 good idea! Rule number one is to have fun!

Please don't go low calorie, it'll only pile back on again later ☹️

OhMyChrist2020 · 04/07/2021 17:49

I’m not going to track calories, it sends me mental and according to Dr J isn’t even accurate. It’s just hard to break out of the diet mentality and not revert back to old dieting habits.

OhMyChrist2020 · 04/07/2021 17:51

I only want to lose half a stone so it’ll take time I suppose 🙄

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 04/07/2021 18:12

Sorry I think I've been misunderstood. I think following the plan means I eat fewer calories. It is for me as I eat less, I'm not talking about going low calorie!

I like tracking as I find it interesting 🤣- I am quite dull though 🤔

Aria999 · 04/07/2021 18:18

Makes sense!

And of course everyone should do what makes them comfortable 😊

Aria999 · 04/07/2021 18:29

I haven't counted calories for about 13 years but I do weigh myself all the time and the book doesn't want you to do that either...

I've been doing a muted version of the graph with the woman getting fatter after every diet during that time (eat a bit less for a week or two, lose a few pounds, then drift back up to an increased weight set point).

My weight set point has increased by about 10lbs over 20 years or so.

Been doing this plan for about 3 weeks and lost 4lbs. It doesn't sound much but it's really the difference for me between looking fat and looking ok (i am short) so I am very happy! If the remaining 6lbs come off then brilliant but I bet they won't.

OhMyChrist2020 · 04/07/2021 18:34

Sorry @WeWantAMackerelNotASprat I knew you didn’t mean to go low cal, I just find that when I track calories it negatively impacts what I eat as I’m too conscious of how many cals are in something rather than how good it is for me. I get a bit obsessive too. But I know lots of people find it helpful.

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 04/07/2021 18:43

@OhMyChrist2020 I've never counted before as I've been lucky that my genetics mean that I have always been naturally slim- that was until I became peri menopausal and now I feel uncomfortable and can see the weight creeping up.

I know someone mentioned that counting calories meant they would make bad choices e.g oh I've 100 calories so I'll eat one of those 100 calorie twix things. For me I think ooh what's the best value I can get for my 100 calories and it'll make me choose a better option. I can see how for some it can be obsessive and I wouldn't want to get like that.

So by starting counting it's made me take check- so I like dried fruit and nuts (I know nuts are a bit of a no no) and by calorie counting I just get a decent amount rather than a stupid amount. I'm hoping after I've done it a couple of months whilst also trying to be on plan I'll start to understand more.

I'm definitely not denying myself.

I'm glad the plan for you is working and making you feel better, rather than calorie counting it's great that this works for you

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 04/07/2021 18:45

@Aria999 the whole set weight thing is why I want to do the plan as I think my set weight has moved up a bit- nothing to do with dieting as I've never done it before, but my age! I need it to go back down a bit and I really don't want to end up putting more on.

Tiredandbored · 04/07/2021 19:29

Good day today food-wise. I had porridge for breakfast and a roast beef dinner with loads of veg. Snack of smoked salmon and Philadelphia on rye crispbreads with grapes and tomatoes. Did have one square of 85% chocolate with my coffee, but that is my usual little treat that prevents me from otherwise wanting to eat desserts or other sweet treats.

LifestyleReset · 04/07/2021 20:23

Had the weekend "off" and I feel awful. I've been in a rotten mood all weekend too.

Back to it tomorrow. I have 7 weeks until our holiday and only 1 planned day off. Really would like to lose 7lb before my break!

PippaRose · 04/07/2021 20:42

Hi everyone - I commented on the first page of thread one and only just realised that there are 3 threads and counting.

I’ve only cut out ultra processed foods so far so not taking out wheat / pasta but I feel so much better already. I’m a healthy weight but it’s so nice not to be too obsessing about what I’m eating and thinking about calories.

Will keep following - such a lot of great ideas and things to think about too

pegboardsu · 04/07/2021 22:07

Am inspired and have ordered the book!

Can I ask how old you are?
Im 55 and lighter in menopause than I was in my twenties. Largely due to awareness about what to eat and drink, and the fact that you need to eat less even when you do a lot of sport. This woe with no upf, minimal sugar or refined carbs really helps with staying in shape.

WeWantAMackerelNotASprat · 04/07/2021 22:24

@samthebordercollie I'm 47.

It really was hitting 40 when it all changed, gone was eating as much as I wanted! I'm 5'7 and after my 2nd child I weighed 7.5 stone. I don't want to be that tiny again (I was far too bony) but at 10 stone I just feel huge. Things don't hang off me well and I'm getting that tyre around my tummy. I am really hoping this WoE will help

CatherineCawood · 04/07/2021 22:52

For anyone here who has not read the book - do yourself a favour and read it if you can! Hopegully it will be the last book about diets you ever buy! 🤞 Below are the basics but you need to read the science behind it all.

There are 5 rules to follow in order to lower your weight set point so you easily and effortlessly move to a new lower weight. You may not need to do all of them and Dr J says that if you reach your goal weight before you incorporate them all then stop that is fine.

He also says be realistic with your goal. If you are 45 and have been 16 stone for years you are not going to drop to 9 stone! A drop of 3 stone would be much more reasonable. Look at your family, are you from a small boned petite family or from a family where most are bigger? Genes play a part. Your own mother's weight when pregnant with you plays a part in your adult weight today. Those born after 1970 or so are more likely have had obese mothers which makes us more likely to be bigger with a higher set point.

Here is the list:

  1. Eat more, rest more (see photo)
  2. Get better quality sleep, at least 8 hours
  3. Get your ratio of omega 3 to 6 between 1:1 and 1:4
  4. Exercise to tone your muscles
  5. Reduce your insulin by eating a lower (not keto or ultra low carb) diet with a glycemic load of 100 ish

I hope that info helps some people 😀

I find I need a sweet kick in the mornings. Can anyone suggest a high protein/fat breakfast which isn't savoury please? I can't stomach omelettes etc before lunch.

Aria999 · 04/07/2021 23:16

@LifestyleReset

I have mostly been having full fat Greek yoghurt with a little bit of honey (gradually reducing!) and some chopped apple or other fruit.

Also granola though that does have added sugar. But oats are good. Others have suggested plain uncooked oats and / or flax seeds on it.

I mostly can't face omelette before lunchtime either!
