Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 3

We’ve chatted as much as we (used to) eat! New shiny thread for more support.

General principles:

No sugar
No wheat
No processed foods
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

Everything else is fair game!

@collywobble That's okay though isn't it? I mean maybe if it's one of those 600ml tubs of cream, I'd cut back a bit! But otherwise, it doesn't have the shitty western stuff that is best avoided!

collywobble · 03/07/2021 16:00

@TammyTwoSwanson technically yes and only a small carton but I could have quite easily eaten more and the calories are so high. I seem to gravitate to all things calorific and not want to stop eating them . I'm the same with cheese I love the stuff and once I start it's very hard to stop .

@WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa

What's the difference between golden flaxseed and brown flaxseed?
Brown taste better but golden have more ALA (omega 3)
TheLeadbetterLife · 03/07/2021 18:09

Well, inspired by the oatcakes chat I made some today, just using rolled oats, wholemeal spelt flour, butter, flax and chia seeds. Hopefully this will improve the situation re: roughage (to use a lovely, old-fashioned word that reminds me of my dad, who was big into the whole foods movement of the 80s).

I also decided to get ORGANISED, to avoid over-doing it on the yoghurt and cheese. I've prepared a big tub of sliced green peppers, raw broccoli and cucumber, and made some hummus. I've also made a big batch of sauerkraut. When I've got some butter in I'm also going to make some tuna pate to have on the oatcakes.

Tonight's dinner is roast chicken with tarragon, and a pile of raw, marinated courgettes and radish from our garden. Can't wait.

TheLeadbetterLife · 03/07/2021 18:11

Oatcakes to the left.

Ohhh the oatcakes look awesome. Is the recipe online?

TammyTwoSwanson · 03/07/2021 20:54

@TheLeadbetterLife They look brilliant! Are they hard to make? I wanna try!

TheLeadbetterLife · 03/07/2021 21:16

They were dead easy!

I used a combination of a recipe from a Hugh F-W book I have (River Cottage Light & Easy) and this one:

www.bbcgoodfood.com/user/831133/recipe/scottish-oat-cakes

Substituted the wholewheat flour for spelt and replaced 20g of the oats with the seeds. I cut them triangular a la Hugh, as you get less waste and re-rolling. There’s something a little chic about the triangles too.

It’s been tough not to scoff the lot.

samthebordercollie · 03/07/2021 21:18

Coincidentally I listening to a book by Dr Robert Thomas and he spoke about flax seeds. He recommended lends them to all his patients who ate constipated and mist thank him for recommending flax seeds to get things moving. He recommends 1 heaped teaspoon by day and crushed. Rather then while to make sure it is absorbed.

samthebordercollie · 03/07/2021 21:25

Autocorrect has obliterated my post! The Dow toe said to eat them crushed rather than whole to ensure absorption
Sorry!

TheLeadbetterLife · 03/07/2021 22:08

Yes they’re very hard to digest whole apparently. The ones I get from Aldi come pre-crushed.

Benvolio · 04/07/2021 00:35

Inspiring oatcakes! I need inspiration. Fell off wagon into a rather disappointing bowl of pasta, some breaded mozzarella and a couple of glasses of pimms. Nothing else sugary in the drink though, but none of it was as good as I had hoped. Back on it tomorrow. FFS it's not exactly hardship. Stupid me.

Words · 04/07/2021 06:24

I'm going to try those oatcakes !

Leftyloosey · 04/07/2021 09:35

Morning 😀
Sausage patty and fried potatoes for breakfast. Lovely and filling.

I was tempted by a glass of Prosecco during last night’s match but it tasted disgusting, like sherry. Settled for a Becks Blue which hit the spot.
Ordered a meat box from Field & Flower this week. Maybe worth a look for the carnivores out there. I have a selection of steak, burgers, bacon, and kebabs and so far, so delicious.
Hope everyone has a good day x

BangingOn · 04/07/2021 10:17

Just catching up on pages of posts, it’s great to see new people joining and everyone feeling so positive.

I’m still on plan and feeling good. I’ve now lost 1 stone and 11 pounds since mid-April. Loss has stalled slightly this week but I know this is hormonal and water related and should hopefully be followed be a decent loss in a few days.

I am freaking out slightly as we are due to go to Menorca on Saturday (assuming no sudden changes to the green list) and with DS it’s so much easier to go all inclusive, but the food choices might be limited for me. I’m thinking natural yoghurt for breakfast or cold meats and cheeses, then going for grilled meats or fish, salads and avoiding anything that looks fried. Oh, and resisting the desserts of course!

TheShriekingCrow · 04/07/2021 10:33

Can I join please? This looks like exactly what I should be doing?
I’m being lazy and just skimmed through the thread but are we eating fruit?

badlydrawncat · 04/07/2021 10:52

Yes but also eating low carb (starting with 150gm/day, heading for 80)
No grains, especially wheat
Balancing Omega 6 & 3 between 4-1 and 1-1
No veg oil (olive, cold-pressed rape & avocado are ok, ghee, butter, lard are all OK)
No refined or UPF

Basically if it's available in the veg shop, butcher or fishmonger it's fine. If your granny ate it, it's fine.

NowYouListenToMeFella · 04/07/2021 10:55

Morning. Hoping it's ok to join in. Currently reading the book and it certainly is eye opening. Have been on many a diet and food plan over the years. Looking forward to giving this WOE a go.

Have gone through my cupboards and anything not on plan has been given away. Have some batch cooking done for dinners during the week and will do more today.

Trying to find a suitable recipe for granola. I like a bit of crunch with Greek yoghurt and fruit. Does anyone make their own?

badlydrawncat · 04/07/2021 10:56

Also lifestyle changes.
More sleep, regular meditation, less stress, slow down, regular but not extreme exercise.
Make sure you read the book, it gives the science and rationale behind this. It's not actually a weight-loss diet.

TheLeadbetterLife · 04/07/2021 11:00

I don't make granola (too much sugar), but I agree about crunch with the yoghurt. I just have raw, rolled oats with mine, and a few nuts and chia seeds, plus ground flax seeds.

TheShriekingCrow · 04/07/2021 11:05

It sounds very similar to The Four Pillars book by Dr Rangan Chatterjee I just read. (It’s s good book but I’m only mentioning it because I don’t want to buy another similar book)
He talks about good health being about eating, sleeping, movement and relaxation.
It’s lovely to join a group that I can do all this with Smile

NowYouListenToMeFella · 04/07/2021 11:06

Thanks TheLeadbetterLife. Can I ask what nuts you use?

TheLeadbetterLife · 04/07/2021 11:13

Almonds, brazils, walnuts and toasted hazelnuts. I mix them in a big jar with the oats and seeds. In each bowlful there’s no more than about five nuts.

Dr Jenkinson is a bit down on nuts because of the omega 6, but my view is they have so many other health benefits that a tiny amount of them per day isn’t a problem.

I also — gasp — regularly eat peanut butter (the 100% peanut kind).

NowYouListenToMeFella · 04/07/2021 11:16

Thanks. I think I shall follow your lead. Given the amount of shots I currently eat, I think if I cut that out a few nuts now and again won't kill me. Also love peanut butter. Same as you 100% nut one. Thanks so much for the advice.

badlydrawncat · 04/07/2021 12:05

Someone else mentioned that earlier in one of the threads. I haven't read it yet, must get hold of it 🙂
