Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 3

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/06/2021 23:21

We’ve chatted as much as we (used to) eat! New shiny thread for more support.

General principles:

No sugar
No wheat
No processed foods
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

Everything else is fair game!

@Bearyhumcrack

Burn by Pontzer is complementary to this and definitely worth a listen. Explains really well why the "eat less move more" dullards who pop up on weight loss threads are very very wrong when it comes to losing weight.
Yes, it's very interesting, I'm listening to it at the moment. As someone who does a lot of sport (running 60kms and cycling 200km a week) and actually putting on weight at the moment it's true, it's what you eat not exercise that helps with weight loss. Although that's not an excuse for not exercising as it's so good for you in many other ways, immunity, blood pressure, managing stress etc.
Aria999 · 23/08/2021 12:09

@samthebordercollie it's also good for your appearance. A toned body of any size generally looks better than a flabby one!

@anycrispsleft My instinct would be to try to wean yourself off the Diet Coke, more for the additives than anything else.

Regarding caffeine though, my standard is two large cafetières a day, and doesn't seem to be doing any harm.

Last night I was in agony with stabbing stomach cramps. Very very unusual for me. I can only think it was the flour in the béchamel sauce for my moussaka.

Although cheap bread always gives me indigestion I've never considered I might have some form of serious intolerance to wheat. Given that eating this way I have almost eliminated wheat from my diet, I wonder if this was my body protesting.

Anycrispsleft · 23/08/2021 15:43

Thanks for the replies! I wish I drank coffee. I can't stand it unfortunately.
I suppose I can start having tea without sweetener. I do find that I get peckish if I have drinks with sweetener in, so I'm guessing it is having an effect on my blood sugar.

Neeko · 23/08/2021 17:51

@Anycrispsleft Not sure how much Diet Coke you drink but you might find it easier to cut down over the course of a week before you go cold turkey. It's addictive stuff. I've stopped drinking it for months in the past and given it up when I started this WOE a few weeks ago. I always find the first week tough. For me, it makes me want more sweet stuff.

WeKnowFrogsGoShaLaLaLaLa · 23/08/2021 18:51

Why does this thread keep dropping off the threads I'm on? Is it because I'm not posting enough I wonder?

HighlandCowbag · 23/08/2021 19:15

I only drink coffee, water and very occasionally tea (plus beer and wine) but I found when cutting down on alcohol a grown up cordial made it easier, I like the naice ginger ones. Might be easier to ditch the diet coke but have a back up plan? I don't bother as much with the cordial now (mainly because beer because school holidays) but it is nice sometimes to sit down with a nice cold drink that isn't water.

Yesterday was OK. Didn't have breakfast as usual or any lunch but had a big roast dinner. Had 1 hm Yorkshire pudding because only about 12g of flour in.

Today for lunch I had left over pork, and roast veg. Tonight the kids and dh were whining for takeaway. Am not that hungry so have ordered a side salad and a small portion of chips. Should really have the grilled chicken kebab but I can't face anymore meat. Dd also ordered garlic bread pizza, I may or may not be tempted. But it's also 2nd day of AF, feel shit and bloated already so I don't think a slice will make much difference. Also last full week of school holidays and dh been off work all day which is fucking annoying as fuck. So feel a slice isn't the worst thing I could do.

Tiredandbored · 23/08/2021 22:17

Ok-ish day today for me regarding meals. Actual meals were good (salad, eggs etc) but I did come across a packet of Revels my DH had started and I snaffled some to have with my coffee. I don't really mind as I only had a small handful, which is mega-progress from what I used to snack on, but I ate them as a result of boredom and just because they were there rather than because I particularly wanted them.

Anyhow, I'm not going to beat myself up over it. I'm starting back to work tomorrow and I know I'll be in a better routine as well as having less temptation in the office than when I am at home.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 23/08/2021 22:21

Good day food-wise here - nice cheese on rye crisp breads for lunch (and afternoon snack, just because St Agur is so delicious), then cottage pie for dinner. I needed a snack today because my trampoline class started, hurray, and I didn’t get home until 9.15 so I had to have something at 6 to keep me going.

Yesterday had a reasonably good day food wise too. Because of my potentially flour-related stomach issues I just wasn't hungry.

So gazpacho with flax seed, a couple of tbsps yoghurt during the day and some leftover lamb with roast peppers and bobbity beans for dinner. Peppermint tea eased the bloated feeling.

Still slightly uncomfortable today. I've decided (perhaps foolishly) to give the moussaka another cautious try this evening to test my theory. If the discomfort happens again I have my answer.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 24/08/2021 09:37

Any proper runners on here - I started C25k a couple of weeks ago and my calf muscle started to hurt during my run on Sunday. It was improving, so I did trampoline yesterday - it hurt a bit during the warm up jogs but not at all on the trampoline. However, it was quite painful during today's run, and now that I've been back in and sitting down for a couple of hours it's still painful and it hurts to walk on and particularly to go up and down stairs. I suppose I should rest it (much as I don't want to lose the momentum on C25k), but does anyone know how long it's likely to take to heal? And what about regular walking? I'm going to go out on Friday when I get paid and buy new running shoes as mine are ancient - is there anything else sensible I should be doing?

HighlandCowbag · 24/08/2021 12:52

I'm definitely not an expert (samthebordercollie is ya woman) but Ive done c25k and was running regularly until recently (stopped as have moved the ponies from full to diy livery and don't have enough hours) but I found sometimes I needed more than 1 day of rest between bigger runs. Especially if I'd been diligent and done every other day. I think especially with doing the trampolining as well I'd reat for at least 2 days, and it might be an idea to repeat the last couple of runs in your new trainers. I miss running, I loved doing it but if its a choice between riding and running I'd always chose riding. So need to focus on that.

Not sure what food I'm having today. Did have 2 slices of pizza last night and feel bloated and crampy as a result 😑. It's not something I will have again in a hurry. Tonight will probably be new potatos or jacket potato and salmon I think. Not sure on lunch, am not hungry at minute at all but might have a pick at some cheese and an apple or something later.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 24/08/2021 13:40

Thanks Highland, I will possess my soul in patience for a few days and see how it goes!

So I'm back in the game. Sunday was a mixed bag as although I did a lovely roast chicken with loads of veg, we had sticky toffee pudding with clotted cream for pudding as DH wanted a last treat before starting properly yesterday. However, I didn't eat anything else that day so not too bad.
Yesterday was cheese and apple for breakfast at around 10:30 (at work, I don't eat breakfast early, if at all).
Ratatouille (baked, with cheese) and some leftover chicken for lunch.
DH cooked dinner so it was oven chips, frozen fish (bass with a 'dusting' coating) and peas. Not great but not terrible. I'm not keen on fish so willing to eat the processed stuff once a week if it means I actually eat some. I also had a handful of chorizo slices because I hadn't had enough fat.

Breakfast today (11:30am!) was Greek yogurt, oats, ground flaxseed, inulin (for the gut benefits), sunflower seeds, a few dried berries and half a banana with a sprinkling of cinnamon. Didn't look like a high amount but was quite filling.
Not sure about dinner, I'm working at 6:30pm for an annoying 90 minute evening clinic (half an hour away!) so need to do dinner before that. Was going to make a curry but we're out of garlic...

I have butternut squash and chicken legs, so possibly a tray bake with chorizo and feta and salad for us and teens will probably have nugget wraps (I'm going to make them all watch the UPF programme with me at some point!).

Aria999 · 24/08/2021 16:32

@RagzReturnsRebooted

That has made me want baked ratatouille with cheese! Do you have a recipe you can share?

Re the pudding, at least the clotted cream was on plan 🤣

TammyTwoSwanson · 24/08/2021 16:52

@words I've noticed similar when I ate wheat after not having it for a month with this woe. Each time I've had a really bad stomach. According to Dr Google, only about 10% of celiacs are diagnosed and a lot of the time, it's when people accidentally give up gluten, an allergy or intolerance is discovered!

Words · 24/08/2021 16:54

aTooextramature Not in any sense a runner, proper, or improper, but have had my fair share of aches and pains.

Is the soreness definitely in your calf rather than your Achilles? If the latter, I would advise extreme caution, as damage to that can take forever to settle.

If calf, you could try massaging it. I find the max strength Voltarol helps. If it's bad you could do the hot/cold compress thing. Ibuprofen reduces inflammation if it hasn't eased in next day or two.

Also calf stretches are good.

Thanks @TammyTwoSwanson - that's really interesting re intolerances. I guess it is at least an indicator of how much I've cut back, to get that strong a reaction.

Still don't feel quite right but much better.

Pressing ahead with the second portion of flour-laden béchamel sauce and moussaka tonight, though.
I think they call it the empirical method.Grin

PattiRandall · 24/08/2021 17:43

Ouch, sorry to hear about your sore calf @TooExtraImmatureCheddar.

Ok day here
B Porridge with full cream milk, a few frozen blueberries and flax and chia seeds
L Smoked salmon on rye bread. Is rye bread better than normal bread? I was out for lunch and there were no non-bread options so wasn’t sure what was best, from flatbread, pitta or rye.
D is going to be smoked haddock with cheese sauce and broccoli.

samthebordercollie · 24/08/2021 18:20

@TooExtraImmatureCheddar sorry about your injury, it must be so frustrating as you want to get on with the C25k. I never did the plan and calf injuries are not something I've had, but it sounds like you've pulled or torn a muscle. If it's the former (I'm sure it is) then just have 4 or 5 days rest and try again. If you've torn the muscle it will take longer to recover.
Make sure you warm up properly and maybe do stretching exercises before you start. Muscle injuries often happen when you go off too fast. I pulled a thigh muscle once 5k into a HM, it wasn't so painful that I couldn't finish the race, but I was 20 minutes slower than normal. After a week it was fine.
Calves are not a big problem for injuries, as @Words says, an ankle (or knee) takes a lot longer to heal as there is so much weight put on the joints.

TammyTwoSwanson · 24/08/2021 18:55

We are gonna need a new thread soon!

Words · 24/08/2021 19:19

We are indeed! Smile

Neeko · 24/08/2021 19:39

@PattiRandall I want to know that about rye bread too. I've not been really eating bread overall but have had the occasional slice of rye or sourdough as I (possibly mistakenly) have convinced myself that those are better.
We ate out off-plan on Saturday night and had a few drinks but I've otherwise managed fine. I was worried about lunches when I went back to work (teacher) but so far it's been fine with salads or hummous and veg.

Words · 24/08/2021 20:16

I don't like the slightly aniseed taste of rye so don't eat it, but I do have the occasional slice of sourdough. Seems to be ok.

Not very helpful, sorry !
