Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 3

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/06/2021 23:21

We’ve chatted as much as we (used to) eat! New shiny thread for more support.

General principles:

No sugar
No wheat
No processed foods
Honourable mention to tipping the balance of omega 3 and 6, but that’s mostly achieved by doing the above.

Everything else is fair game!

FF Greek Yoghurt fills that niche @LifestyleReset, add a few berries if you need extra sweetness or make it into a smoothie if you prefer.. If you make it into a smoothie you can add tahini, berries, chia, psyllium, oats, even cream to play around with it.

badlydrawncat · 04/07/2021 23:54

Sorry @LifestyleReset, I didn't scroll up high enough and missed the first part of your post

Morning All
Challenging day today as have to go into the office(shudder). Taking food with of course - Greek yog, flax and fruit plus a small portion tagine meatballs to warm through. Fish for dinner I think.
Have a lovely day everyone.

Morning everyone

We had a party Saturday for the football so it's been a tough weekend. Saturday while we were flying around dh went to get a chippy lunch for him and ds. I didn't order anything but did finish off ds's. Not much tho, handful of chips and a few bites of the fish. Saturday evening I picked at the party food I'd done. Had stuff that was mainly in plan but the amount of alcohol I drank I don't think it would have mattered if I had dived face first in the buffet 🤣. And yesterday was just a disaster. Bacon butties, left over party food and then pizza for tea. I'm ok with it though. Back on plan today and for the rest of the week. Just under 2 weeks before I go on holiday and when I come home from that, have quite a big lifestyle change. We have 2 ponies currently on full livery which means I go when I feel like it. Moving yards and will be diy which will mean 2 visits a day and all the work. Excited but it's going to be hard work but also will get me physically fitter and stronger 💪.

Tiredandbored · 05/07/2021 15:34

@LifestyleReset do you like porridge? I eat it every morning but need some added sweetness so take it with fresh berries or sultanas or stewed rhubarb and honey. Gives me enough of a sweet taste but still close enough to plan.

I was wondering about smoothies and wasn't sure. I usually do a green veg with a banana and water to get extra greens in. Glad to hear that it's ok. Some woe say no as you're not getting the benefit of the fibre.

First day going ok so far. Had porridge, chia seeds and a tiny squirt of honey for breakfast. Apple and a banana for lunch (first day back to work after a week off and it's so busy so didn't get time to make my planned omelette). Cauliflower, chickpea and spinach curry with rice for dinner.

badlydrawncat · 05/07/2021 16:12

We may be at cross purposes. I make a smoothie by watering down greek yoghurt. I stir in Tahini, some fibre (chia or psyllium) and some oats, then I add some berries, cut up or mashed. I don't put any of it in a blender. There's no need

OhMyChrist2020 · 05/07/2021 16:15

Hi 👋 Been out for lunch today as it’s DH’s b’day. We very rarely eat out and I fancied an egg mayo sandwich with chips so I had that. Not disastrous I don’t think and I’m still completely stuffed. Had porridge for breakfast and if I’m even hungry later I’ve got some broccoli frittata in the fridge that I can heat up. He suggested we get an ice cream at this lovely place on the way home but I was too full.

I think for me I’ll get the most benefit from massively reducing sugar and cutting out UPF and seed oils. I’m not 100% convinced about grains so I’ll still have some wheat eg a pasta dish once a week but it’ll be cooked from scratch with lots of veg & healthy ingredients in. I’m currently reading Just Eat It and it’s really helping me move away from the damaging ‘diet’ mindset.

Hope everyone’s had a nice day and there’s some sunshine where you are. I’m currently baking in the garden 😎

I completely read that wrong. Sorry.
Aria999 · 05/07/2021 16:51

Sounds great! I'm also still eating bread and pasta, just a bit less than before. I feel like it's a process of trial and error to get a good balance of what will help my weight but still make me happy! It's going to be different for everyone.

Aria999 · 05/07/2021 16:55

Actually I don't think blending destroys fiber does it? Unlike juicing, the fiber is all still in there, just cut smaller.

TheLeadbetterLife · 05/07/2021 18:01

I don’t know about smoothies, people say the blending breaks it down so that the fruit / veg releases sugar more easily. The NHS, for example, says you can only count a smoothie as one of the five a day, even if it’s rammed with stuff.

I’ve always wondered about soups though - surely a blended soup has exactly the same problem (if it even is a problem)?

I’ve never bothered to look into it, as I don’t have smoothies or soup (I don’t like “baby food” textures without bread or croutons to make them more interesting, which defeats the purpose).

Words · 05/07/2021 18:23

Re smoothies I guess it's a moderation thing and monitor how you feel? Good point about soup, @TheLeadbetterLife . Hadn't thought about that before...

I invested in an expensive new blender, so I've had a lot of soups and smoothies since before I started this new plan. I prefer the veg based smoothies with nothing to thicken, so no banana etc. They are more like juice in consistency.

I blended oranges last week and felt really hungry that day, so will avoid that for now. A while ago I tried a pineapple based one and the instant sugar rush I experienced made me feel ill. Pounding heart, jittery, hot flushes. I gave away the rest of the pineapple !

Today I have overeaten. Stressful, busy day, not enough lunch, no water at all and so was ravenously hungry this evening. Nothing verboten, just too much of it. The salmon I optimistically liberated from the freezer this morning is still in the fridge.

I gorged instead on rump steak, mushrooms in butter, roast kale, roast red pepper and enough broccoli to feed a family of four. I know it's not about calories but...!

For me stress and disruption to routine both trigger overeating. Which is why I have done so well working in my preferred environment ( home) for the last 16 months.

CatherineCawood · 05/07/2021 18:23

Interesting about smoothies and soup. I'd never thought about soup being like a smoothie regarding fibre 🤔

CatherineCawood · 05/07/2021 18:32

Has anyone decided how much weight they want to loose yet? I think about 2 stone to 2 stone 7lbs or me.

I'm 7.5lbs down so far.

Do you know what if I only loose another half a stone so be it. I can live with that. I'm so excited about food, I don't feel deprived for the first time in about 30 years!

I lost a lot initially and have hovered around the same weight for a week now. If nothing happens for another month then that's fine. I feel like I've eaten less than this before and still put on!

Aria999 · 05/07/2021 18:35

We ate the remains of the epic frittata! Woo! DH did like it, and though the baby spat out her own portion she happily consumed some of mine 😂

Thanks for the advice on keeping it in the fridge @Words, if anything it was nicer reheated after a few days.

Aria999 · 05/07/2021 18:39

Congrats on your 7.5 lbs @CatherineCawood that's fantastic!

I'm kind of waiting to see where my body wants to settle. Anything at or below my current weight would be fine (since i lost 4lbs out of my target 5lbs, not much I know but it was very stubborn!). I feel like I may be hovering on the brink of losing another lb.

If I had to guess, something between no more weight and another 4lbs could come off.

samthebordercollie · 05/07/2021 18:52

Congratulations on your weight loss @CatherineCawood ! There are some huge losses going on here.
I'm just doing this woe to stay healthy rather than lose weight, if I can stay around 58kgs that's good. After a weekend it's always more,
Regarding smoothies, I think the rule is to use as many veg as possible and with fruit leave the skin on (pears, apples etc) to maximise fibre. Obviously not possible with bananas and oranges.
Died anyone else est kiwi fruit with the skin on? Kiwi gold that is.

CatherineCawood · 05/07/2021 20:49

I would love to be 58kg!

Yes to golden kiwi skin, love them but they are ££££ aren't they! But so nice.

Tiredandbored · 05/07/2021 21:10

I don't know about the difference between soups being better than smoothies, but would guess that part of it is due to soups generally being vegetables and smoothies are often laden with fruit which is much higher in sugars.

@CatherineCawood, I don't have a definite target weight, but have an approximate hope of losing another 7-14lbs. That would take me well down into the normal BMI bracket, but I'm more concerned with ensuring I can maintain. I would rather be slightly heavier but able to sustain that than lighter but struggling to maintain.

samthebordercollie · 05/07/2021 21:11

Strangely that are the same price as the green ones here, 80 cents.
NowYouListenToMeFella · 05/07/2021 21:27

Forgot to weigh myself this morning, but I'd say I have a stone to go.

Those golden kiwis are so good. I don't know if I could go back to normal ones.

Maybe the smoothie would be ok with just veg. I can skip the banana and drink it quickly.

Day one's eating done. I'm nicely satisfied. Had a snack of strawberries, raspberries and mascarpone.

7.5lbs is brilliant. Well done.

TheLeadbetterLife · 05/07/2021 21:58

I’m anticipating a mixed week. I’ve done very well today, but tomorrow I’m having my first covid jab - if I feel crap afterwards I will eat whatever i fancy to get through it.

Thursday is my partner’s birthday and we’re planning a lunch out. Will probably have grilled sardines, so not a problem, but we’re going to the pictures in the evening and we’ll almost certainly have traditional cinema snacks. I don’t care - one evening of junk won’t kill us, and it’s nice to get out these days.

Aria999 · 06/07/2021 01:21

Good luck with the covid jab @TheLeadbetterLife

First one I just felt a bit tired, second one flattened me for 24 hours!

Words · 06/07/2021 06:26

Morning everyone

I feel a bit blah today as I stress-ate yesterday.

Re veg smoothies - I find a good thumb of ginger increases palatability. I used to add naice cordial but now don't of course, on account of the sugar content. I like kale, parsley, apples and ginger, then add parsley, cucumber, celery if I have it. If you prefer them slightly thicker, add half an avocado. It sounds vile, I know, but they taste nice!

Good luck with the jab @TheLeadbetterLife - I was absolutely fine after both mine, having prepared for the worst in my usual Eeyore like way!

It's my birthday on Thursday too! The plan is to get a selection of grilled meat from the local, very good Turkish restaurant to eat at home. My best friend is coming round to share and I will prep some green salad to go with.

I'm also away walking for four nights from Sunday. It's a gorgeous B and B. I generally don't do B, so am pondering on the food situation - don't want to starve then stuff on unsuitable food later as obviously no means of cooking. I usually self-cater.
