Just made a goats cheese, sweet potato and nectarine salad. It was really nice.

That looks yummy Catherine!
@TheLeadbetterLife - I was wondering what to do with the whey. Soda bread you say ? Will look into that! Glad it was a success!

TheLeadbetterLife · 22/07/2021 16:12

Yes apparently you can just use yoghurt or cheese whey instead of buttermilk in soda bread. I reckon a lovely homemade spelt soda bread can't be all that bad for us.

Yummy !

Really enjoyed dinner: salmon cooked in a bag, spinach, peas, a dressing made of cherry toms, spring onions and parsley, and the juices from the salmon ; and a few salad spuds with home made mayo. I added chives and a spoonful of ...The Yoghurt

I am, predictably, eating the yoghurt at a rate of knots. Batch 3 on the horizon !

I'm really trying not to hoover straight through the yoghurt... it's hard though.

Today I had yoghurt and oats, with flax and chia. A two egg onion and courgette omelette for lunch and then prawns and courgettes for dinner (guess what we have a glut of currently?). Also three bloody squares of 85% chocolate.

We're eating too much dark chocolate.

Oh and a couple of handfuls of nuts. I was hungry.

Yoghurt batch 3 not a great success flavour-wise as I burned the milk, so the whole thing has a smoky flavour. It's not entirely unpleasant so I will use it up in savoury dishes I think.

Such a shame as the texture is nicest so far- made with Cornish milk fro m and a. Will try UHT next time as that only needs to be heated rather than boiled.

Tasty eating yesterday :

Brunch - baked egg with ham , cheese and tomato ( put some good roast ham on bottom of dish, add cherry toms, crack an egg over, cheese on top, oven for ten mins. Delish.)

Snack: two home made oatcakes and goats cheese

Dinner: mmmm had a friend round so slow roast shoulder of lamb served with new pots with garlic and Rosemary and green veg. Yog and fruit. Too much nice chocolate.

Been a googling- and smoked yoghurt is an actual thing! Who knew?

Lots of Australian ideas. With lamb especially which is fortuitous as I have lamb leftovers this week...

Tiredandbored · 26/07/2021 17:10

Veg frittata today, first time making it, was quite good and very filling!

That looks tasty ! Was there cheese in that?

I've just tried something with rhubarb, recommended by the market garden lady I buy it from.

Grilled. With a tiny sprinkle of sugar on it. Very nice- and it holds its shape too.

Today I had

Gazpacho with flax seed.
Green salad, roast ham and my unintentional smoked yoghurt as a dressing
Left over lamb, roasted veg ( broccoli, leeks and cherry toms) and more smoked yoghurt into which I stirred some shawarma paste. Very nice
Grilled rhubarb and the last of the normal Greek yoghurt from batch 2

Tiredandbored · 26/07/2021 18:26

No cheese, but only because I didn't have any! I would've grated some cheddar through if I had any, but was just using up anything left at the end of our holiday.

Grilled rhubarb! Have never tried that, but I can see how it works - I would be too tempted to serve it with ice cream though, so perhaps not a good idea!

Newbie joining in with some questions, sorry!

I read the first few chapters of the book, then skimmed a few in the hope of getting to the details but it wasn't very detailed so I've been reading the various threads!

I'm still confused at to whether oats are ok and if we can have fruit for breakfast? Pic of mine attached.

Is semi skimmed milk ok? The thought of full fat makes me a bit vommy!

I'm not big on fish, I like tuna and am fine with plain cod/haddock etc but really not a fan of sardines, salmon, prawns, mackerel. Should I get a supplement do you think?

Welcome! Smile I'd try persisting with the book. It's a way of eating really, not a diet as such.

Low fat foods are to be avoided as they often contain added sugar or other nasties. I don't think that there is anything wrong with low fat milk in itself, although not sure why the full fat version makes you feel ill. Full fat options will make you feel fuller quicker, so you'll be less tempted to snack.

If you're cooking everything from scratch, reducing sugar and wheat and avoiding veg oils you are on the right track.

Try introducing yourself to the foods you're not keen on gradually perhaps? Experiment with different ways of cooking?

I bought some cavolo Nero which I don't cook with often - it's currently in my slow cooker with some stock, cream, Parmesan rind, leeksand onions. Might not be great, o t oh might be a new addition to the repertoire ! Time will tell...

Tiredandbored · 27/07/2021 14:33

@Manteo, I used to feel the same about full fat milk. I only ever took semi-skimmed and the thought of full fat made me queasy, but I introduced the kids to full fat as I'd read a few years ago that they needed the fats to help development and growth.

On a few occasions I started using their full fat milk if I'd run out of semi-skimmed and realised I could barely taste a difference, so I changed and now only drink full fat.

Perhaps try introducing it gradually or get someone to do a blind taste test with your coffee or porridge and see if you notice any difference. You might be surprised!

Words · 27/07/2021 18:17

The slow cooked cavolo Nero is only ok. I have a better recipe for something similar for the winter- ribbolita - a proper soup traditionally thickened with bread, but you can leave that out.

On thé other hand- I asked for ideas for a sweet potato, as part of my veg less tasted campaign.

Made it into chips and roasted with olive oil and salt. OMG delicious.

I thought I didn't like them!

Was going through have a healthy fry up for lunch but realised we were out of eggs so thought I'd have a salad and then realised we also had no lettuce!! Managed to throw this together though, quite impressed I didn't just give up and have toast!

Mmm @Manteo . Do you want to take us through what's on there?
Sam - sweet potatoes now permanently on the menu Chez ... Mots?!

Manteo · 30/07/2021 09:23

Peas, sweetcorn, green beans, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, olives, pickled onions (no sugar, I checked!), Halloumi fried in a bit of olive oil then balsamic vinegar, olive oil and sea salt for dressing. That's all ok isn't it?

Manteo · 30/07/2021 09:23

Oh and avocado! How could I forget the avocado?!

Words · 30/07/2021 18:13

Delicious!

Manteo · 30/07/2021 21:34

I think this thread has died now but I'll give it another go, grilled goats cheese and mixed pepper salad for dinner.
