@badlydrawncat

OK. I've just found a different value on Wikipedia which makes it plain that chickpeas should be out. Bye bye hummus 😢
that wiki page has fried my minds. Tomatoes too high in omega 6, as are chickpeas...as are avocados and coconut oil, acording to wiki but the book says all those are ok. And yet nuts aren't. Struggling as am vegan and need fats, can only have avo and coconut and want to add in nuts but book is so clear that that's a no go
behappy38 · 07/07/2021 14:20

@CatherineCawood

Doesn't the book say a ratio of omega 3 to omega 6 should be 4:1?
but walnuts are 4.2:1 (according to wikipedia, not sure if it is accurate) and he says no no "walnut's have a high omega 3 but its omega 3 is rendered useless by its omega 6"

@User1023

I LOVE wild rice!!

I was wondering about almond butter. I have a peanut allergy so thinking of other nut butters. I used to adore peanut butter!

I think almond is one of the highest omega 6 nuts

@behappy38

It must be hard to do this as a vegan!

If you're getting the oils right that's most of it. Otherwise eat as much avocado as you can stand for the good fat and otherwise just stick to your normal stuff? You can't really live with no nuts as a vegan right?

Aria999 · 07/07/2021 17:35

Lunch: feta, tomato and avocado with olive oil, balsamic vinegar and black pepper.

I never end up taking a photo as I'm too busy eating it 🤣

behappy38 · 07/07/2021 17:45

@Aria999 thank you :) yes, thanks for this, am gona still eat nuts and seeds cos I have to make sure I get the nutrients and just steer clear of sugar, wheat and the veg oils

B: HmmHmm I was hungry- never eat breakfast. Anyway cheese omelette

Snack: cheese and some home made oatcakes ( used gram flour and not a huge fan of the taste- can anyone suggest a neutral tasting ok flour?)
Lunch: ready made blue cheese and fig concoction. More oatcakes.
Another Snack: Hmmgreen leaves with dressing
Dinner: baked salmon with a lemon/butter dressing of parsley, capers and baby toms, with roast courgettes and red pepper, steamed broccoli and pink fur apple pots in home made mayonnaise

I have been so hungry today. Part genuine, part craving. I am not sure what exactly I am craving though. I'm tired, too, and I think my brain is equating tired with eating junk in some form.

badlydrawncat · 07/07/2021 21:17

@Words Tapioca flour is very neutral. I use it for pao de queijo which are great for breakfast. It's also the basis for beiju which is a sort of coconut pancake.

Ooh thanks for the tip!

I'm going camping this weekend...
Trying to think what to pack that is vaguely on-plan. Weirdly, breakfasts and dinners (barbecue) are not so bad, but I am struggling to think what to eat for lunch (will probably be out walking, having packed up from the tent in the morning). We are wild camping, so no facilities at all. Any ideas..?

ColouringPencils · 09/07/2021 07:01

Following on from message above, is there anything at all oat cake/ cracker-ish that is shop bought and allowed on this plan?

Words · 09/07/2021 07:30

colouring I have a very similar problem! I made some oatcakes last weekend with gram flour. They tasted a bit odd to be honest so will try again with an alternative.

I am going walking for four days from Sunday, staying in a B and B though, and am pondering the food situation, especially as I generally don't eat breakfast, and will be eating in the local Italian in the evenings, with no means of keeping food cool.

Cheese, hard boiled eggs? If you eat meat, something like a good quality sausage, or cold roast chicken taken with you? What cooking facilities do you have? Could you make an omelette/ frittata and eat it cold?

I think most oatcakes contain palm oil, but to be honest I will probably end up taking some anyway. I figure they will be far better for me than bread!

User1023 · 09/07/2021 07:44

I tend to eat oat cakes. They aren’t amazing in terms of having palm oil, but as you say, there are a lot of worse things out there. I’ve also had dark rye crackers and cheese.
Can you take salad things and pack up a salad? I think that’s what I’d opt for if you were worried. I have a Greek type salad most days with feta and olives packed in. Yum.
Enjoy your trip, wild camping sounds so much fun

samthebordercollie · 09/07/2021 08:45

I probably sound like a stuck record on this, but adding chia seeds and ground flax seeds to a salad (a good tablespoonful) fills you up a lot more. I'll be adding them to soups in the winter too.

ColouringPencils · 09/07/2021 09:08

Posted too soon! My problem has just been solved by DH receiving an isolation message, so camping is off [cry] F'ing covid.

Words · 09/07/2021 12:41

Oh no @ColouringPencils . That's too bad- how disappointing for you.

Aria999 · 09/07/2021 13:02

Oh no! Are you really not allowed to go wild camping? Doesn't that count as isolating if you don't see anyone?

(We're in America so the uk rules baffle me!)

Words · 09/07/2021 17:27

Well, I had another go at the oatcakes, using whizzed up oats. Really good!

I can't link, but it was a recipe from a website called pennysrecipes.

Roll out thinly for super crispness.

Lunch was buckwheat crepes with gruyere and salad. Thanks whoever suggested that!

Glad you enjoyed it! We eat galettes here in Brittany lots - they are to prepare, pleased everyone cos they can choose their filling and healthy
Words · 09/07/2021 20:23

Yes the very same @Aria999 Grin

Words · 09/07/2021 20:27

And thank you :)

By the way, for U.K. based thread friends, Ocado currently have a special offer on flax seed powder. I've been sprinkling it ever since the blockage incident. I really like the texture and 'feel' of it mixed into Greek yog. Filling as well as keeping one regular.

ColouringPencils · 10/07/2021 09:50

@Aria999 possibly we could have gone, but I think we would have worried about it and felt guilty, especially showing the kids that we were cheating the system. Also, I chose that site as it's near a really nice pub, where we were supposed to go for dinner on Saturday, so that would definitely have been out. I have rearranged for a date in August, so will look forward to that instead - and will be better prepared with food options!

@Words have you got all your meals planned for your walking trip? The oatcakes sound good, I am going to try those.

What is everyone eating this weekend? I work full time and have two children, so meals during the week are always a bit less inspired! I look forward to cooking and eating well at the weekend.

I am still reading the book, it seems to be taking me ages...
