Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 2

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 14/05/2021 22:52

Shiny new thread to continue on with! I hope everyone keeps going.

For any newbies, this thread is based on a book by Dr Andrew Jenkinson. The main principles are to cut out sugar, wheat and ultra-processed foods, while eating fresh natural ingredients. It works!

@Redbottle well done that’s amazing! Definitely get reading the book- it found it really empowering. I also enjoyed that sugar film, available on YouTube

BrightShark · 29/06/2021 11:53

I’m laughing at all the shared experiences of sub-par chocolate bars and banned avocados Grin

To be fair, maybe these diet companies have changed their practices. Although looking at the food photo thread on here, I don’t think so!

Redbottle · 29/06/2021 11:54

Thank you BrightShark and CatherineCawood. Will definitely try to find the film, thank you. It's actually shocking how addicted to sugar I was in retrospect. Never thought I'd be able to turn down something sweet, but the cravings are almost gone. Like lots of you on this thread I'm amazed at how not-hungry I am now.

LifestyleReset · 29/06/2021 12:10

I used to love Flyte bars! lol!

YoungBritishPissArtist · 29/06/2021 12:27

I did Slimming World 3 times Blush they used to really push those hifi bars. Just found them listed on Iceland's website, these are the ingredients:

Oligofructose syrup, cocoa crisped rice [rice flour, cocoa powder, sugar, raising agen (sodium bicarbonate), salt], milk chocolate (11%) [sugar, cocoa butter, cocoa mass, skimmed milk powder, whey powder (milk), lactose (milk), butter oil (milk), emulsifiers (soya lecithin, polyglycerol polyricinoleate), flavouring], roasted peanuts (10%), glucose syrup, crisped rice [rice flour, sugar, rice bran, rice extract, raising agent (calcium carbonate), salt], gluten-free oats, chocolate flavoured coating 5% [sugar, vegetable fats (coconut, cocoa butter), whey powder (milk), lactose (milk), low fat cocoa powder, emulsifiers (soya lecithin, polyglycerol polyricinoleate), flavouring], sweetener (maltitol syrup), raisins (3%), dextrose, sweetened condensed skimmed milk (milk, sugar), unsalted butter (milk), cocoa powder [cocoa powder, acidity regulator (potassium carbonate)], caramelised milk powder (sugar, skimmed milk powder), humectant (glycerol), salt, flavourings.

GRIM!

Billybagpuss · 29/06/2021 12:33

I actually didn’t like them and figured a kitkat was an equally good option

YoungBritishPissArtist · 29/06/2021 13:05

A kitkat would be much better!

I have a question for everyone. Not sure if this is addressed in the book (still waiting for my reserved library copy) do you weigh butter, cream, EVOO, etc? I've started measuring it out by tablespoon, before I would just pour it willy nilly Blush TIA

Not unless it's for baking, but I'm an experienced cook, and I don't fear fat!
BrightShark · 29/06/2021 13:10

@YoungBritishPissArtist oh my goodness! That is grim!

I used to like hifi bars (I often ate one during the meeting but never a whole pack Shock). They definitely affected my stomach. Thank goodness I’ve seen the light!!

LifestyleReset · 29/06/2021 13:33

I'm not measuring anything.

I nearly did weigh my oats this morning (40g healthy extra B ha ha!) but thought nope sod it!

CatherineCawood · 29/06/2021 14:07

@LifestyleReset 😂😂😂

I do measure oats but only so I can get the ratio of dry to liquid right,

RagzReturnsRebooted · 29/06/2021 14:20

I don't measure anything. Though I probably should measure cream, I do eat rather a lot of it!

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/06/2021 14:25

I don’t measure anything unless I’m trying a new recipe. But for things like strawberries and cream - nope!

OP posts:
CornedBeef451 · 29/06/2021 14:36

I measure oats too, just because otherwise I end up making a vat of them! I don't bother measuring anything else though.

CornedBeef451 · 29/06/2021 14:36

@YoungBritishPissArtist that is horrifying!

Don't the bars count as your B choice too so you had even more reason to eat them?

Throughtheday · 29/06/2021 14:52

Afternoon all, I need some tips about how to break my Coke habit. I'm doing pretty well in other areas, but I need the caffeine. At least, it started as needing caffeine but now I'm clearly addicted to the sugar. Problem is I don't like tea or coffee. Any suggestions of things to try instead? Currently only a sugary drink seems to fill the void, but it doesn't even have the advantage of keeping me awake! I know fixing the sleep part will be a big help but that can't happen immediately.

HighlandCowbag · 29/06/2021 15:38

I'd just go cold turkey on it @Thoughtoftheday. Swap it to a fancy dilute cordial then wean yourself off the cordial.

I've forgotten to eat lunch today, just sat down and browsing mn and clicked in the thread to log what I've eaten then remembered I haven't eating. Have got some fritata in the fridge, going to have some of that to get me to teatime which will be later cos football. Having a fry up, got naice bacon and naice butchers sausages, not ideal but will have plenty of mushrooms and tomatoes with it.

TheLeadbetterLife · 29/06/2021 16:10

Re: oats, I just eat them raw (i.e. rolled oats, not straight out of the field raw!) with yoghurt and (whisper it...) a few nuts and seeds. I think it's a nicer texture than porridge, which is a bit baby food-ish for my liking.

Throughtheday · 29/06/2021 16:52

I did try that today, @HighlandCowbag. But I must have dropped off in front of my computer about 20 times. The webinar I attended was a nice opportunity for a longer nap! Shock

Can I join your chat?? I eat really healthy and then I snack like a naughty kid! Anyone any advice on kicking the sugar addiction??

Words · 29/06/2021 16:57

I just want to say how very glad I am I spotted this thread a few days ago and joined it. I feel really positive about myself and my ability to tackle the next part of my weight loss plan which will take me to ideal - and then continue to use what I've learned to maintain rather than gain back.

It may take a while, but I don't care!

Thanks everyone for being so welcoming.

Same here!

it's great that we're nearly at the end of the second thread. I wonder if the Jenkinson movement will gain momentum on here and gradually, inevitably, draw people in from elsewhere in Weight Loss Chat. Like the gravitational pull of a star.

Throughtheday · 29/06/2021 17:15

Hello @jelly79, yesterday (?) a pp was experimenting with half a teaspoon of sugar to combat sugar cravings.

Throughtheday · 29/06/2021 17:16

I have lost 3lb in approx 9 days on this woe, despite multiple cokes.

Words · 29/06/2021 17:19

The more the merrier! It would be good if he does do a webchat on here- but I wonder if he will. He keeps a reasonably low profile on social media I think.

Here's to thread 3!
