Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 2

Shiny new thread to continue on with! I hope everyone keeps going.

For any newbies, this thread is based on a book by Dr Andrew Jenkinson. The main principles are to cut out sugar, wheat and ultra-processed foods, while eating fresh natural ingredients. It works!

Thanks @samthebordercollie it’s probably been a blessing in disguise. Proof this new woe is way better for me. Has made me more determined! I also agree with you about calories being a poor measure of how they impact body as it depends on food type. I remember avoiding avocados on SW but eating crunchies because they were only 4 syns .... crazy!

BrightShark · 28/06/2021 22:55

Really interesting thoughts @Words

I also agree this aligns with Michael Morley’s Mediterranean diet. I’m using recipes from the fast 800. Love them because they are very simple and don’t have too many ingredients.

I am a fifth (or something similar) the way through this book, so I'm place marking.

I'm wondering though, does he ever talk more specifically about individual people or take into account things like eating disorders/mental health issues that cause overeating? It seems all very "population level" so far, which is really interesting, and great, but I'm just wondering! I guess I can find out when I keep reading !

BrightShark · 29/06/2021 08:43

@TammyTwoSwanson yes there is a chapter called “The glutton” about half way through (from memory- it might be a bit earlier than that). Explores why individuals overeat. Talks about the different types of bariatric surgery and how they affect the body, which is really interesting.

Yes, I remember the story of the morbidly obese man in the restaurant who couldn't stop eating. He explained that once you get to a certain level of obesity your hormones for hunger (grelin) and satiety (leptin) no longer function properly so the urge to eat is uncontrollable.

samthebordercollie · 29/06/2021 09:11

And of course as been mentioned many stress and the level of cortisol plays a huge part in either overeating or underrating

samthebordercollie · 29/06/2021 09:19

Undereating bloody autocorrect!

CatherineCawood · 29/06/2021 09:24

@Billybagpuss

AIBU yesterday we had roast beef, and I made Yorkshire puddings and it occurred to me they are actually more protein (milk and eggs) than carbs as there’s hardly any flour . Am I clutching at straws here 😂
You can make yorkshires from arrowroot powder in place of flour, never done it but the results I saw on a keto FB group looked good.

He did have help writing the book from the psychiatrist at the hospital he works at. You have to jump through many mental health hoops to get bariatric surgery because its not a cure all there is only so much it will do the patient has to do the rest.

I've lost my book - how?! So just ordered another but have the audio book too which is v good to listen to. Really well read and the reader has a lovely voice!

undereating isn't in my vocabulary either 😂

Exactly. Pink 'n' White Wafers, crunchies, flyte chocolate bars (remember them?), Go-Ahead biscuits and bars, Nimble bloody bread... I could go on.

It's not proper food and like you say avoiding avocados as if they were going to make you fat!! Sat there stuffing processed crap in my face looking at my mega dry skin and wondering why my moisturiser did nothing!

Platterpuss · 29/06/2021 09:34

Oh this is sooooo true!! I never ate processed food UNTIL I started SW!! I was told it would do something magic!! Absolutely ludicrous!! I couldn’t understand why I felt lethargic, achy, headaches etc.
Now I eat avocados and olives daily and feel liberated!!

BirdsandBeesmakinghay · 29/06/2021 09:36

I went to SW once and left as soon as I heard that avocados were out but crappy processed food was OK so long as it was a ‘syn’. Bonkers

RagzReturnsRebooted · 29/06/2021 10:27

@TheLeadbetterLife

Have you experimented with different flours? I’ve found gram flour makes fabulous batter.
Oohhh. I've just bought some gram flour as I wanted to experiment with it. I remember using it a lot years ago when I tried gluten free for a while.

I've not been posting but have been reading. Just had TOTM so weight went up a little and stayed there for a week, but it will go down again. I've been eating well, apart from a few keto microwave chocolate puddings which I treated myself to for my period pain (wheat and sugar free, but still not ideal even if they are homemade).
DH is still on board, which is pretty amazing, I don't think he's ever gone this long without bread!

BrightShark · 29/06/2021 11:07

@CatherineCawood yes Grin! Flyte chocolate bars... I remember them! I used to visit specific stores to buy them. I feel so manipulated by the food industry.

BrightShark · 29/06/2021 11:14

Oh and add in manipulation by the food industry too

You’d think they’re in cahoots. Oh wait they are! SW and WW both have extensive UPF ranges.

CornedBeef451 · 29/06/2021 11:14

This is giving me slimming world flashbacks. There was one woman who would buy loads of their fake chocolate bars, get weighed and then eat more than a box of the bars while we had the meeting.

That was seem as perfectly reasonable but the uproar when I said I'd had an avocado, madness!

BrightShark · 29/06/2021 11:15

Gah! That should say the diet industry!!

BrightShark · 29/06/2021 11:28

@CornedBeef451 that is madness!

I definitely increased my consumption of UPF due to WW and SW. This was years ago, so things might have changed. I’ve always eaten lots of fruit and veg, but definitely ate less healthy food on these diets which when you stop and think about it, is odd. I didn’t think it was unhealthy at the time though.

Redbottle · 29/06/2021 11:31

Checking in and placemarking. I cut out processed sugar and wheat 5 weeks ago and have lost 6kg so far Shock Just ordered the book as I'm looking for long term lifestyle changes rather than a quick fix.

Billybagpuss · 29/06/2021 11:34

No surprise that nestle own weight watchers

Billybagpuss · 29/06/2021 11:35

Sorry got that wrong, they bought up a rival company
CatherineCawood · 29/06/2021 11:41

@BrightShark indeed. I used to go to Boots to get my Flyte bars. Remember how they were in 2 sections, like a Bounty to make you think you were having more than you were!!!

I remember someone at SW getting v cross about avocados! Crazy times. @CornedBeef451 yep I remember those people. They were bad those hi-fi bars. What a joke. One was never enough. Anyway mug shots, hi-fi bars and the like can do one. Now we know better!

CatherineCawood · 29/06/2021 11:45

@Redbottle awesome!

TheLeadbetterLife · 29/06/2021 11:46

God I'd completely forgotten about Flyte bars. They tasted terrible, what was the point?

Same for those awful low fat hot chocolates - Options? In lower sixth, I lived on those and watery cup a soups. I was slim I suppose, but what a price to pay. It all went downhill in upper sixth anyway!
