Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 2

Shiny new thread to continue on with! I hope everyone keeps going.

For any newbies, this thread is based on a book by Dr Andrew Jenkinson. The main principles are to cut out sugar, wheat and ultra-processed foods, while eating fresh natural ingredients. It works!

Thanks for the replies on saturated fat. I have read the book, but maybe I fell asleep reading that bit!! I am going to go back to it and find it.

badlydrawncat · 27/06/2021 15:57

I've never subscribed to the saturated fat is bad for you thing. I can regularly be heard screeching to butchers to leave the fat on. I'd rather have half the amount of good, natural food than live on faux-butter, tastless lean only meat and yoghurt with sugar added to replace the fat. Like @TheLeadbetterLife I don't eat fat all day every day but I do eat it along with olive, avocado, coconut oils etc. You might find this interesting.

Quinoa is a pseudo-cereal like buckwheat, not a grain. Freekah though is actual, proper wheat so off-plan.
I've never been able to stick to keto for more than a couple of weeks. I'm in awe of those that can make it work although I've long hard suspicions of its long-term health impact if done stricly. LC is my 'happy' WOE although I carb-slide in the colder months. It does seem to have decreased my set point over a 6 year period though. We've spent some of December in Southern Spain a couple of times and LC has been much easier, even allowing for the season.

@samthebordercollie
I've had a really niggling knee problem since last Nov which stopped me running. It's a bit better now but typically for me I'm struggling to get back into running. Just yoga, some HITT and walking for now.

@YanTanTethera123 what a wonderful boost your weight loss muddy be, that's fantastic!

Breakfast/brunch: bacon & smashed ago + 6 baby plum tomatoes
Dinner: No idea. I was going to make the Beef Rendang recipe that was posted on this thread but there's no beef in the freezer. It'll be a salad with something... watch this space as they say 😀[/quote]
Aha thanks @badlydrawncat that makes sense! I'll plough on with quinoa and buckwheat then and ditch the delicious freekah. It does have large amounts of fibre, which did me a favour this morning if you get my drift!!

CatherineCawood · 27/06/2021 16:16

@LifestyleReset

Is anyone wary of the saturated fat on this plan?

As an example, I just added a lamb joint to my grocery basket 100g has 46% of your recommended saturated fat intake.

I'm really used to everything being low fat (previous slimming worlder) so I don't know if it's my mindset needing to change or if it is still something to keep an eye on.

If I had never ventured into keto then I would have been worried, but believe me once you've done keto you no longer worry about fat! SW and WW makes you paranoid about sat fat, don't be there is no need. Never again shall I buy fat free anything or skimmed milk.

Ultra low fat diets have been connected with depression. I know it gave me very dry skin.

CatherineCawood · 27/06/2021 16:18

@TheLeadbetterLife

A recipe thread would be great.

I'm envious of the rabbit stew, sounds delicious.

I am very lucky to have befriended the farmer who has the goats and sheep that are herded around the countryside here (right past my house most days). All I have to do is send his wife a text and a few days later I go and collect a freshly-slaughtered lamb or kid, which spent all its days happily eating wild herbs and carob leaves.

My life is absolutely ridiculous since I moved here. I honestly cannot believe it.

I make tortilla quite a lot Words. For a low carb option, I recommend a courgette and onion one. Very pretty to look at, as well as delicious. A griddled pepper one is lovely too. I have a tapas recipe book that suggests making two or three different tortillas and layering them like a cake for a special occasion. I haven't tried this, but I bet it would go down a treat at a picnic!

@TheLeadbetterLife Where do you live and do you have a spare bedroom? Sounds awesome!
CatherineCawood · 27/06/2021 16:19

I made the recipes/menu etc thread it is here

LifestyleReset · 27/06/2021 16:21

@CatherineCawood Interesting - my skin is awfully dry too! I've been "low fat" since my teens. I've never had nice, hydrated skin.

CatherineCawood · 27/06/2021 16:40

I've asked MN for a webchat with Dr J - @lilymumsnet has passed the request onto the press team for consideration. Fingers crossed! Do feel free to pile onto the thread in site stuff and add your name to the list of people that would like MN to organise it.

Tiredandbored · 27/06/2021 16:50

@CatherineCawood, I think a separate thread for meal/recipe ideas would be great! I keep scrolling back through this one to get inspiration, so it would make my life easier!

Hit and miss so far today:
Porridge ✔️
Roast chicken dinner with boiled potatoes and veg ✔️
Chocolate cake with ice cream ❌❌❌❌

I was having dinner with a friend and she set dessert in front of me and I'm afraid my willpower deserted me.

Will only need a snack later, probably either salad or scrambled eggs, definitely no more sugar for me today!

Aria999 · 27/06/2021 17:30

Calorie intake and portion control is still a thing, even if this plan doesn't involve calorie counting.

It shouldn't be. If the theory is right then your body will do this for you. Portion control comes from being full and so stopping eating.

BrightShark · 27/06/2021 17:30

Well done and welcome @YanTanTethera123 it is a revelation isn’t it? Especially after years of dieting.

Ugh I’ve felt hungry all day after my Ikea meal (I might have also eating a few mini daim chocolates Blush). So it’s caused me to have a bad stomach (and wind!) for over 24 hours and has brought back all the cravings and hunger. This is all the proof I need to steer clear of UPF and sugar! I’ve eaten far too much today to satiate my hunger.

Ah well tomorrow is a new day!!

BrightShark · 27/06/2021 17:34

I agree with @Aria999 after a few days without UPF and sugar, my body/ appetite and satiety hormones were doing the work for me in terms of regulating my intake. I simply wasn’t hungry and stopped eating.

Now I have sugar in my bloodstream I just want more and more and more! Now I have to use my willpower not to scoff the rest of the daim bars!

Seahorse11 · 27/06/2021 17:35

So interesting to read about your views on sat fat. I don’t worry about it these days but I have scars from my past life of SW mentality.
And yes, I can honestly say it made my mood incredibly low while on low fat options. Also I didn’t have energy. Felt sluggish and horrid.
Had this discussion with dh this morning. He reached for the Philadelphia and muttered about it being full fat!! I can’t seem to get it through to him about the toxic effects of processed food!

BrightShark · 27/06/2021 17:57

Yep the proliferation of the low fat and ‘healthy’ processed foods industry is when it all started to go wrong in the U.K. with our diets.

Ironic really that diets promoted the very foods that are so bad for our bodies! I distinctly remember my diet club leader in the early noughties saying that sugar doesn’t make you fat, but fat does.

It’s going to take years to unpick this mentality. It’s so hard wired into our brains.

The DHSC plans to label all food eaten out with calorie content will probably encourage people to make even worse choices. Just such a bad idea!

Words · 27/06/2021 18:39

I had a reminder today that even fruit derived sugar can be a trigger. Blended some oranges for juice this morning and I have been ravenous all day, and really craving carbs and sugar.

I've over eaten without a doubt.

Interesting lesson.

CatherineCawood · 27/06/2021 19:43

It is an interesting lesson. I'm trying to build up my sons weight, he is super slim (due to medication which suppresses his appetite) and give him a lot of blended fruit to pack the kcals in!

Aria999 · 27/06/2021 20:00

One thing he says is (about sugar cravings after a glucose crash) - what your brain wants is about a half teaspoon of sugar, what it gets is a blueberry muffin. (And the cycle begins again).

I am experimenting with having just one half teaspoon of sugar when I experience a sugar craving!

TheLeadbetterLife · 27/06/2021 21:10

Well, yes and no. The reason I’m overweight in the first place is that I’m a glutton. This plan hasn’t changed my diet that much, except for drastically reducing the amount of carbs I was eating and cutting out seed oils.

I’ve never had much of a sweet tooth and hadn’t been eating much processed food, but my portions have been too big.

It is still perfectly possible to eat too much cheese, trust me.

Interesting, how’s that going?

I’ve been noticing when gardening in the heat that I’ve often been going faint after crouching. I think this might be low blood sugar, as it improves if I eat something. I usually have some cheese, yoghurt or a boiled egg, but I wonder if a half teaspoon of sugar or a peach or something might be better?

Fruit juice is one of the worst things to drink because it is rich in sugar and there is no fibre which you would get if you ate the whole fruit. To be avoided at all cost, freshly squeezed or not. It's as rich in sugar as a glass of coke. You need 6 oranges for a glass of juice, would you be able to eat 6 oranges in one go? I wouldn't. That's why whole fruit is ok and juice isn't,
Tiredandbored · 27/06/2021 21:58

It is possible to eat too much cheese, but you're much less likely to do so when following this WoE. As you are more satisfied and have reduced appetite following this WoE you will not overeat cheese (or anything else) in the same way that you used to overeat when you were still eating wheat and sugar.

I used to binge eat an embarrassing quantity of food. Some evenings I could have eaten a whole pizza, a packet of cookies, a couple of doughnuts and a tub of Ben and Jerry's Blush

On this WoE my appetite has reduced and I'm finding I get uncomfortably full even after a normal-sized meal.

I'm having to actually remind myself to serve smaller portions so I don't get to that uncomfortable stage.

TheLeadbetterLife · 27/06/2021 22:01

@TheLeadbetterLife Where do you live and do you have a spare bedroom? Sounds awesome!

Ha ha, Portugal (Algarve region) and yes!

JeffVaderneedsatray · 27/06/2021 22:26

Greetings everyone
I'm still enjoying this WOE. It's incredibly refreshing to eat 'nice' food - a couple of tablespoons of creme fraiche and some fresh fruit (or even frozen) is infinitely preferable to a tub of watery low fat stuff and so much more satisfying. I also stay fuller for longer.
Things are by no means perfect - Thursday I had some of the apple crumble that DD had made at school. Friday I was upskittled and looking for food.
However on Friday I had a dance class in a room with an entire wall of mirrors and I was delighted to see that my belly looked smaller.
I'm 4.5lbs down over 3 weeks. This is going to be slow but it's doable so I'm fine with that.
I can see where I am eating unnecessary food and can cut it out - for example on getting home from work I always have a snack but what I really need is a cup of tea!
This coming week might be a struggle as DH planned most of the meals but as I cook them I can adapt and leave out the things that I need to avoid.

I hope no one minds me just popping in every now and then - I always read back but struggle to keep up!
