Why We Eat (Too Much) Thread 2

Shiny new thread to continue on with! I hope everyone keeps going.

For any newbies, this thread is based on a book by Dr Andrew Jenkinson. The main principles are to cut out sugar, wheat and ultra-processed foods, while eating fresh natural ingredients. It works!

That makes sense, though we do eat fairly seasonally so we have seasonal ruts - maybe that’s not such a problem if it evens out over a few months? At the moment it’s courgettes with everything, and probably too much fruit (but it’s so bloody good at this time of year. We don’t eat much fruit in the winter).

Morning All

Yesterday ate as planned, except for equivalent four large squares of milk chocolate in the evening. The pull of it was surprisingly strong. No more chocolate buying for now! Revisited my Ocado order and made some...adjustments Blush

Today I am making a wild rabbit casserole for dinner ( thinking red and yellow peppers and olives to make it a bit Mediterranean-y) ; with greens and pots. Salad for lunch I think, and usual smoothie mid morning. Yesterday was a bit light on the f and v.

Off to farmers' market shortly.

LifestyleReset · 27/06/2021 10:43

Yesterday was

B - Weetabix and whole milk (nearly at the end of the pack!)
L - Spinach and cheese omelette
D - Curry, wholegrain rice and some strawberries and cream

Today:

B - Weetabix and whole milk (only one portion left at last!)
L - Probably another omelette
D - Chicken pie (potato top), cabbage

I also need to drink much more today, failed with that yesterday and only managed around a litre.

What is the general opinion on baked beans?

CatherineCawood · 27/06/2021 11:12

Morning peeps

I posted yesterday but it didn't post?! Weird. I went out for lunch yesterday and was able to choose something suitable really easily. I was in Rye visiting a friend, we went to a pub/restaurant that uses only local seasonal produce if possible. I had Romney Marsh lamb, with a hassleback potato, spring greens and a sauce vierge. £24 and quite small but delicious. Pretty sure it wouldn't have had much omega 6, imagine the sauce vierge was made with olive oil and not sunflower and the lamb was grass fed on the marshes (unless they were lying and they bought it at ASDA!).

I shall try to contact mn towers and request a web chat with Dr J.

Would anyone be interested in a thread just for recipe links/food ideas/photos and menus. Keep it all together and away from discussion about the book etc? I'll start one and talk to myself, all welcome to join in.

I'm doing well - I think, I have really looked into the omega 3/6 thing which to me is the crux of the plan. I am trying to buy grass fed meat. I am allergic to nuts so that's an easy one for me! Actually quite nice to have a "diet" that doesn't encourage nut use for once. I did keto a couple of years ago (was 19lbs lighter 2 years ago!) but everything was nut this and nut that.

I've lost 3lbs this week, started with the audio of the book last Saturday, liked it so much I went to buy the book on Sunday and then changed my eating on Monday onwards. I did quite a bit of peeing this week so assume mostly water.

Interesting that he says in the book that Slimming World can help change your set point to a degree. I stopped SW in Feb 2019 swapped to keto and lost a stone more. I had lost 3 stone at SW which I kept off give or take 4-5lbs. Stopped keto and pinged back up to where I started but think I might have managed to move my set point down doing SW by at least 2.5 stone.

I need to sort out the bread thing next. I like this: lovely bread which is only wheat, water, yeast and salt. But imagine it is high in omega 6.

Still need to work out if quinoa and freekah are ok.

CatherineCawood · 27/06/2021 11:15

@LifestyleReset well done on working through the weetabix! I'm the same, don't want to chuck stuff away.

Baked beans have added sugar and are processed so would think it would be wise to have small amount or avoid. I could be wrong though.

CatherineCawood · 27/06/2021 11:26

I think that's exactly what he is saying in the book. Eating seasonally is how our grandmothers would have eaten previously. He does say eat more summer foods than autumn foods though.
YanTanTethera123 · 27/06/2021 11:28

I read the book before my holiday (UK) three weeks ago and (yet again) decided to see if this one would be any better than the umpteen other ‘diets’ I have tried and failed on over the years.
At 67, and on medication not conducive to weight loss, I wasn’t optimistic!
Well, nearly 23 days later I have lost 10lbs! I’m gobsmacked!
I no longer have cravings, a late breakfast + meal early evening or no breakfast, hearty lunch and a snack later, I don’t even feel hungry or be obsessing about what to eat next.
It’s a complete revalation!

samthebordercollie · 27/06/2021 11:34

@CatherineCawood your experience with keto and the regaining of weight is interesting. I'm listening to Dr Giles Yeo and he went through the various low carb diets and said that at the time of writing no study existed to confirm that people following the keto diet managed to keep the weight off long term.

I wish I didn't like nuts. I'm going to have to ban them from the house too as once I start I can't stop eating them.

CatherineCawood · 27/06/2021 11:40

@samthebordercollie during keto I was in such good shape the best I've ever been in my adult life I think. My waist was so small. I reckon if I had known about omega 6 and added it to keto I would have lost even more. I can't do keto again though it was so restrictive and it made running sooooooooooo hard, like running through treacle!

samthebordercollie · 27/06/2021 11:51

@CatherineCawood I've never done pure keto but eat low carb generally. I'm not a pasta fan and really struggle with carb loading before a marathon.

CatherineCawood · 27/06/2021 12:16

Ah yeah I know what you mean. Pasta is pretty meh to me unless its some amazing fresh ravioli. Cous cous is ok, potatoes are ok. Bread is my downfall. Thats what I missed doing keto.

I do tend to eat lowish carb, if I cook spag bol for the family I tend not to have pasta but have it on a big bed of raw spinach or with a big salad with some cheese.

I spent the second half of my first marathon feeling really sick. Turns out I hadn't eaten enough.

Currently can't run as I have mortons neuroma badly and am waiting for a steriod injection. Less than 2 weeks to go now. Miss running and walking. All I can do is cycle atm.

@CatherineCawood Oh no, another knee sufferer! I'm currently off running and cycling for 6 weeks (still walking although probably shouldn't be but my dogs need exercise). I have no knee cartilage due to arthritis so had a steroid injection 4 weeks ago followed by a hyalauric acid gel injection a week ago. 2 more weeks of rest to go - I run 60 miles a week usually so am missing that - and cycling which I love too - a lot! Will try and find time for a swim this week now the local pool is back open.
Hope your steroid injection works and you can get back to running and walking soon Flowers

CatherineCawood · 27/06/2021 12:50

OMG poor you. You must be really missing it. I do nothing like 60 miles a week! More like 10 to 15 unless I'm training for an event. In theory i'm doing VLM in Oct. Can't see it happening somehow.

My injection will be in my foot between the toes I think Envy vom! Walking v hard right now.

Words · 27/06/2021 13:18

Morning ladies Smile And hello @yantantetherer - love the name! Wink And congratulations on the fabulous weight loss.

My rabbit stew is in the oven for later and I've also made a celery potato leek and cheese soup with fridge leftovers. Tastes good.

I love the idea of a separate thread for recipes. Please go for it! I have a picnic to go to on Friday and was going to take home made quiche but thinking of making a tortilla instead. If anyone has any suggestions for that I would very much welcome them.

Now, back to the book!

Words · 27/06/2021 13:20

@catherinecawood - envious of the salt marsh lamb. It's so good isn't it. I find it harder to get than I used to, where I am.

@CatherineCawood so sorry, I misread, have bad knees on the brain at the moment! Of course you can't walk easily if your foot is injured. I really hope the injection is soon and you can do the VLM. Still plenty of time to train if it's soon!
TheLeadbetterLife · 27/06/2021 13:50

A recipe thread would be great.

I'm envious of the rabbit stew, sounds delicious.

I am very lucky to have befriended the farmer who has the goats and sheep that are herded around the countryside here (right past my house most days). All I have to do is send his wife a text and a few days later I go and collect a freshly-slaughtered lamb or kid, which spent all its days happily eating wild herbs and carob leaves.

My life is absolutely ridiculous since I moved here. I honestly cannot believe it.

I make tortilla quite a lot Words. For a low carb option, I recommend a courgette and onion one. Very pretty to look at, as well as delicious. A griddled pepper one is lovely too. I have a tapas recipe book that suggests making two or three different tortillas and layering them like a cake for a special occasion. I haven't tried this, but I bet it would go down a treat at a picnic!

Words · 27/06/2021 13:58

Ooh @TheLeadbetterLife that sounds my idea of utter heaven.

With the courgettes, would you cook them first? Grate them and add them?I am not a huge fan but willing to try new recipes as they are plentiful at the moment and I need to expand the variety a bit now winter root veg ( and English asparagus) is over.

Love the idea of a tortilla cake. Mmm.

badlydrawncat · 27/06/2021 14:04

@CatherineCawood
Quinoa is a pseudo-cereal like buckwheat, not a grain. Freekah though is actual, proper wheat so off-plan.
I've never been able to stick to keto for more than a couple of weeks. I'm in awe of those that can make it work although I've long hard suspicions of its long-term health impact if done stricly. LC is my 'happy' WOE although I carb-slide in the colder months. It does seem to have decreased my set point over a 6 year period though. We've spent some of December in Southern Spain a couple of times and LC has been much easier, even allowing for the season.

@samthebordercollie
I've had a really niggling knee problem since last Nov which stopped me running. It's a bit better now but typically for me I'm struggling to get back into running. Just yoga, some HITT and walking for now.

@YanTanTethera123 what a wonderful boost your weight loss muddy be, that's fantastic!

Breakfast/brunch: bacon & smashed ago + 6 baby plum tomatoes
Dinner: No idea. I was going to make the Beef Rendang recipe that was posted on this thread but there's no beef in the freezer. It'll be a salad with something... watch this space as they say 😀

TheLeadbetterLife · 27/06/2021 14:07

Yes cook them first - thinly slice and roast them in the oven to get the liquid out, otherwise the tortilla is too soggy. Grating them, adding salt and squeezing them would also work.

I slice the onions thinly and cook them gently in olive oil until they're nice and soft.

Then beat and season the eggs, mix in the onions and courgettes, pour the lot into a well-oiled skillet (the one you cooked the onions in, ideally, to get all the flavour, but scrape off any stuck-on onion first).

In my tapas book, the recipe says to turn the tortilla using a plate to do the other side, but it's too heavy and asking for disaster, so I finish it under the grill. If the pan is well-oiled and heated before adding the egg mixture, a bit of shaking and levering with a spatula usually gets it out in one piece at the end (flipping onto a plate).

The other day I used two large courgettes, one large onion and six medium eggs.

badlydrawncat · 27/06/2021 14:11

@CatherineCawood VLM? Wow, that's amazing
🙌

Rabbit, tortilla, kid, lamb, tapas... Please stop 😉
vvvv
no, don't really, it all sounds delicious

Is anyone wary of the saturated fat on this plan?

As an example, I just added a lamb joint to my grocery basket 100g has 46% of your recommended saturated fat intake.

I'm really used to everything being low fat (previous slimming worlder) so I don't know if it's my mindset needing to change or if it is still something to keep an eye on.

HighlandCowbag · 27/06/2021 14:29

I think he covers saturated fat in the book @LifestyleReset. Says that actually it's not that bad for you. Plus we should actually be eating lots of different foods and lots of different types of fat and I've found I eat more fish than red meat.

Have struggled today and had a cheese salad sandwich which was literally the best option. Been at a watersports event with ds , didn't have time to do a pack up and was absolutely starving. But don't think I ate enough yesterday. Had an omelette for brunch, then 2 butchers sausages and a few pieces of steak kebab for dinner. Tonight everyone wants takeaway so will have the mixed (grilled) kebab with salad. Not ideal as veg oil but tbh its been a struggle all week and I've kept pretty much on plan despite shitty circumstances so not going to be too hard on myself.

Tomorrow is a new start and a new week and I have just under 3 weeks before a holiday so going to push myself to try and be on plan as much as possible and would love to lose 3.5 lbs to be into the next stone bracket before we go.

Words · 27/06/2021 15:20

Fantastic re tortilla, thank you.

The cheap chorizo in the stew was indeed a mistake. It looked authentic and all, but the gravy tasted surprisingly nasty, so started again and improvised with frozen ratatouille veg, garlic stock and wine.

Will reheat thé bunny in that later and see if it's ok. Thinking puy lentils with it. Are those on plan I wonder?

TheLeadbetterLife · 27/06/2021 15:31

Saturated fat is not bad for you, according to the book, and the science that says it leads to heart disease is very flawed and outdated.

It doesn't mean you can just eat tons of fatty meat all day, because it would just be way too many calories and you'd never lose weight. But that's a portion control thing, rather than a fat avoidance thing.

Calorie intake and portion control is still a thing, even if this plan doesn't involve calorie counting.

So, I'm not at all wary of saturated fat, but I don't slather everything in butter and eat pork belly every day either. Yesterday I had choriço sausage and ham, tonight I'm having a tuna salad.
